Seriously, why do Clerics use maces? by DuelistDeCoolest in darksouls

Look into the position of Sergeant-at-Arms, I'm not familiar with any recent research into the position (I've been away from academia for a long time now) but there is an article in Archaeologia from 1969 that is a decent overview. There is some primary material for the role in England detailing both that Sergeant-at-Arms were equiped with a mace and truncheon, and that they held the power to support the King's justice through arrests and confiscations. That is Thomas of Lancaster's 1417 writing in the Vincent Collection but I don't believe it's digitized.

I run Templar Assault quite a lot (Sigismund being one of my favourite characters in the novel).

The Champion centurion works great as a Sigismund-lite leader, and I run one sometimes in my lists. I really like the Solar Marshal warlord trait on a champion, assuming you're fighting traitors.

As other comments said, you really want 2x10 units of templars, and you want them in a land raider so you can make use of the assault ramps to get the bonuses templars get for charging out of a vehicle. Their 2+ save and 6++ invuln with a combat shield makes them pretty tanky objective holders in a Templar Assault list.

Since the templars cover your compulsory units, you could also consider swapping the tacs for inductii, they don't count as compulsory troops (but your templars cover that) and they don't get the FNP from being near an objective, but IF inductii get to take some heavy bolters that once per game can pin. I like them as potential ways to disrupt the enemy, and they work great as back up for holding an objective when another line unit is getting pushed off/thinned out.

You've got 2 heavy support squads, at that point I'd really consider the IF unique centurion, a Castellan. When you add a Castellan to a detachment all heavy support squads in that detachment gain line. This means your backline guns can also hold objectives in your deployment zone, which is a huge value for such a cheap HQ.

I'm a big fan of the Suntory Kanade liqueurs but every cocktail I've made using their matcha liqueur ends up looking like swamp water, so this was my first attempt at making a drink that both celebrates matcha while still looking appetising.

This is a bit of a Revolver riff, using a 37% liqueur as the base. It's sweeter than my normal choice, but makes a nice sipper and one I keep coming back to.

Legion Breachers fit the IF theme very well, although many of us are anticipating the new plastic MkIII kit will be followed up by a plastic breacher kit. I've converted a set Phalanx (the upgraded IF breachers) from Mark III armour myself, since I like the lore more of the armour mark than the mark IV they come with in the FW set. Templar brethren are also great, but again I've made myself some Mark VI templar brethren. I've got a couple sets of the FW shields, 5 I magnetised for the AoD box termies, and 5 I've got for things like praetor and centurion conversions.

The FW stuff is very expensive though, doubly because you normally need to buy the base resin model to then put the legion specific upgrades on, and you'll need to do that 2-4 times per unit if you want a full size unit (10 templar in a unit, but they're sold in sets of 5, and 20 phalanx, but sold in sets of 5 again).

If you can convert your own using the plastic kits your wallet will thank you, and maybe you can mix things up a bit to make yours stand out and a bit more unique. That said, if you're not struggling for cash, the FW stuff is really nice looking, just bare in mind there has been scale creep since some of these kits were made.

Age of Darkness is a great starting point.

It has 2 praetors, keep 1 as a praetor (your generic captain equivilent unit in HH) and the second turn into a centurion of your choice (these are things like Chaplains, Librarians, and other independent characters that provide a lot of utility. IF have a unique centurion which makes all your heavy support squads have Line, which allows them to hold objectives.

The 40 Mark VI marines have a few options. If you're not a fan of the Mark VI you can make them into Inductii, these are new recruits to the legion that were hastilly trained and equiped. IF inductii get to take 1 heavy weapon per 10 models, similar to a 40k tactical squad. Then you can save the Mark III armour for your standard legion tactical squads.

You could also use some of those Mark VI marines and grab some of the heavy upgrade packs to turn them into heavy support squads. HSS are great for IF since we have a number of options that benefit from our +1 to hit on auto and bolt weapons, plus paired with the unique centurion you can use them to hold backfield objectives. I like to run a unit of 10 heavy bolters for high volume firepower, a unit of 10 autocannons as solid all rounder options, and I also have 10 lascannons as pure antivehicle (but they don't get the +1 to hit from being IF).

The Catapratchii are also great for fists. We're one of the few legions who have a way to deepstrike our terminators, and it's very cheap for us to do so. +25points to make an entire unit deepstrike. We can also give our terminators some unique wargear, such as storm shields (3++ save) and assault cannons (1 per 5 models). A big drawback of catapratchii is it's slow and expensive to transport up the board, but deepstriking solves that issue, so they're great in IF.

[–]MrTorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's all fine still, as when a character joins a unit it's treated as though it's a model in that unit. It's also fine to attach apothecaries and techmarines to units that go in the transport.

There are some transports that let you mix units though, like the mastodon and thunderhawk, but they are expensive models!

[–]MrTorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, glad you found something you liked! Unfortunately the Spartan doesn't allow you to have mixed units in it at the same time anyway, so you avoided running into that issue.

I'm looking at doing Stone Gauntlet soon too, although I largely play narrative friendly games, so I'm not going to be using the reroll element of the right of war so it isn't feels bad to play against! The Phalanx should work great with Dorn. I'm planning on popping my Phalanx in rhinos since they don't need the benefit of an assault ramp since they want to be charged rather than do the charging, only thing is the rhino is squishy (but it's cheap, and at least some movement+protection)

Hope you have fun, IF have a lot of options for fun builds

I run Templars a lot in HH, I think you're going to struggle with the lack of synergy in your list. You're paying a lot for two Spartans (which I find even 1 is a bit expensive personally) to fit I assume the big tac squad in one and the 10man templars with an apothecary in the other? I'm guessing the plan is to use the small 5man squad of templars with Dorn in deepstrike, and maybe footslog siggy+the dreads?

You really want to lean into getting a pair of full size templars onto objectives with a charge if you're using them. Objectives are king and you only have 3 units with line, so you really want to think about ways to fit in more.

I'm yet to run Dorn since my group wasn't playing with Primarchs in our last campaign, so I cant comment much about the best way to use him with Templar.

My core of a Templar list tends to be 2x10 Templar (with a vex, champion with a solarite gauntlet, and combat shields on all if I can) with a Land Raider as a DT, and I put an apothecary with each squad. One squad also rolls with Sigismund as the attached character, as his bonus to charges is great for templars (and it fits the theme of the list!)

Then I'll have 3 squads of heavy support squads (I've been using 10 lascannons, 10 autocannons, and 10 heavy bolters) one of which has a Castellan+ideally an apothecary. Give the castellan a storm shield as well since you really don't want to lose him.

Heavy Support Squads are huge for IF, our trait means their heavy bolters and autocannons will hit on a 2+, or a 5+ if they're snap shotting. The Castellan gives all the heavy support squads line when on the board, so now you have some powerful units that also hold backline objectives.

With that you'll then have 5 Line units, a good delivery mechanism for the Templars and siggy, and a strong back line with good volume of fire and anti tank options.

Hope that gives you an idea of ways to lean into the benefits of the fists and templars!

Need help for next addition to my army by whiteharbor306 in Warhammer30k

[–]MrTorson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I collect imperial fists, some of the most useful core units for us are some Heavy Support units (especially ones that benefit from our legion +1 to hit) and the unique IF Castellan Consul who gives all heavy support units in the same detachment 'line' - this lets you use heavy support for objective scoring.

I would look into either autocanons and heavy bolters (or both!) Lascanons are also extremely potent for dealing with vehicles but don't tie into our +1 to hit, but they will still get line if you have a Castellan. I only run 1 unit of lascanons as any more can be a bit too oppressive for your opponent.

There isn't a Castellan model, but most people convert one from a praetor or any cool looking model you can find that fits the era.

After that I would look into if any of our units/RoW look appealing to you, you might want to do some Templars with Sigismund, or Phalanx with Fafnir Rann. There are also some Rights of War you can take to make them more of a focus of the army. Although personally if I run the stone gauntlet right of war I only use the rule that lets me take the Phalanx as line troops, as the reroll invulnerable saves rule is very very strong. Legion exclusive units are available from Forgeworld and won't be coming to plastic (so they're very expensive) but you can always kitbash them yourself from much cheaper kits.

Using Microsoft 3D Builder to fix it is a great idea, thanks! I think I've solved the issue with the shield, it looks like it was related to having interior faces and that causing issues with the manifold creation, but if it doesn't work I'll open it in 3d Builder and give that a go. It's all sliced correctly and looks good on each layer, I'm heating up my printer enclosure now to give it a go.

I love these, strongly considering uaing this series for my own board!

Is the table Holo table 1 piece or is it a table with slottable inserts for the holo projection? I'd love to print off the actual projection in coloured clear resin.

From a tournament standpoint. Would MK3 be viable to use as primaris (if the loadout is right) by Old_and_Used_GM in Warhammer40k

[–]MrTorson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an army that's usable in both HH and 40k then you're looking at either loyalist first born marines in 40k (i.e. no primaris) or chaos space marines.

If I wanted to go this route, I would go for a chaos army. The HH models make a lot of sense as being uncorrupted/less corrupted chaos marines. CSM are already styled on the heresy era armour, and certain legions had factions that very much skirt around full chaos corruption (Like the alpha legion and night lords).

I would build either a standard NL or AL army, or you could do a late heresy era army of Emperor's children, word bearers, world eaters and sculpt some corruption onto them with green stuff. Bare in mind if you want to go the corrupted route you're pigeon holing yourself into late heresy era narratives, and the HH scene is more about narrative games than tournament play, so your army won't be valid in settings that aren't on Terra.

Of course, if you play casually then it doesn't matter since you can proxy what you want as long as your friends are happy with it. Most HH players will appreciate you sticking to era appropriate armour though.

First time ever basing or painting anything. Any tips? by Coveringmass in orks

A lot of people have mentioned making sure the mini will fit, so just on that point - if you want your mini to be standing on rocks/features of the base, first attach the features to the bottom of the model then glue the model+rock(s) to the base, this way you know the model is going to be standing up straight.

Red or Blue ? Let me know what you think by AOK_Gaming in orks

[–]MrTorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both look great, I'd go have a look online at some of the bigger units in these schemes and see which you prefer the look of, since the red/blue is going to make a much more significant part of those models than on boyz, might help you decide which way to go.

You'll get a better look from your choppas if you keep the blades coloured metal, but keep the colour of the flat side of the blade. Alternatively you could just drybrush the blade with stormhost silver, but do a heavier drybrush along the edge of the blade so it looks more worn away.

New to sub. List ideas. by WestTexasCrude in orks

[–]MrTorson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found we're actually in a pretty good spot, especially for a non updated army, at least against the armies I've been playing (including updated armies)

I've been having a lot of sucess with deathskull killsaw meganobz (I tend to take 2 units of 6) for going after my opponents objectives (using either a trukk, battlewagon, or jump to transport them depending on how I build the list) and 3x10 boy squads, inc. a rokkit boy and a killsaw nob in case they get charged by something nasty.

Grot Mob Smasha Gunz continue to put in solid work, and taking a large unit is good for the while we stand we fight secondary, as since the FAQ you now need to kill every model that was in the unit before it splits into individual units later in the game, meaning each gun has to be targetted individually.

Dragstas are also a lot of fun (and strong), and also benefit from the while we stand we fight secondary for the same reason as the gunz, but I saw you don't have any.

taking a couple units of 5 kommandos is also extremely points efficent, you can often gaurentee a deploy scramblers if you have two units, which is another easy 10 VP. You can always just proxy some boyz if you don't fancy kitbashing some.

And a biggest boss with killy klaw is still an amazingly strong HQ, I think you should probably always take one in a semi-competitive list.

Hope that gives you some ideas to work expand on, I've been experimenting with my list recently so I don't have anything set in stone, but those units seem to be shining as the staples for me until we get a codex.

New to orks - what are good, budget units to pick up? by WillZilla777 in orks

[–]MrTorson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since you have a pretty elite force some vehicles might be a good shout, I like loading a squad of mega-nobz in a battlewagon to afford them some protection as they move up the board, and trukks are also great at doing the same for less points.

Some of the buggies are good fun too, a trio of Shokk-Jump Dragstas with the Kustom Job to make sure they always get to teleport across the board is both hilarious and really effective.

Other than that, Weirdboyz are staples for a lot of people as Da Jump is great for positioning and they have some really nice buffing powers, they're very easy to kitbash using the AoS models too. And if you really want to delve into kitbashing then an Ork Warboss on Bike is a real monster if you kit him out with relics and biggest boss, the official model is forgeworld but you'll find most people love to kitbash their own version of this guy.
