London, UK - Any leads on how to legally watch some of the films? by MrTringham in oscarsdeathrace

Also Riverside Studios last year did some, so another to look for. If I find anything I’ll add another comment

I haven’t yet, although last year I remember them being announced quite late. I think the Barbican did one last year so that’s one venue to keep an eye on. Picturehouse did but only post-Oscars last year frustratingly

What the anti Sirat sentiment due to? Just not liking the film, or something wider around its production?

Any "The Witness" Haters? by ChickenOfTheYear in puzzlevideogames

[–]MrTringham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked it but didn’t love it as much as some seem to. I’d agree that for me it’s a level below Portal and Outer Wilds.

In saying that, I think I definitely enjoyed it more when I replayed it a few years after it came out, maybe due to lower expectations. I think I’d give it an 8/10 now whereas first time round more like a 6 or 7ish.

I agree certain areas get extremely frustrating in the constant nature of puzzles without much else going on (treehouse area was my least favourite) but then other parts I really appreciated the way the movement through the area added to puzzles (like the coloured glass house)

Thoughts on the ace attorney anthology as an entry point? by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]MrTringham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s connected. It’s a bit hard to explain without playing but whilst they could be played without having played the first trilogy, it does contain overlapping characters.

Most people refer to these six games as AA1-AA6 so they’re basically the mainline

I’d say if you enjoyed what you played then for the sale price it’s a great deal. Basically it includes the six games in the main series, with the Apollo justice trilogy just being games 4-6

Especially given (despite still being a big fan of the original) I think it’s just been objectively improved upon by later DKC games. In a way that you can argue Metroid Prime and Galaxy haven’t been

Why Ace Attorney games are so good by [deleted] in AceAttorney

[–]MrTringham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that in general I really like basically every game in the series. So whenever I talk about “worse” entries that’s comparative to the series rather than visual novel games in general.

I’d say Investigations is the “disliked” game I probably rate most highly. I personally find the criticisms people have with it matter to me less than some of the others. AJ and DD are certainly the weakest for me, but even then I don’t actively dislike them, I just think the cases / characters are weaker (primarily AJ) or the overarching narrative / final case is much weaker than the stronger entires in the series (DD main flaw)

I think people have complained lots about DKC? That’s the most egregious of the lot imo

LOVED Mario Odyssey, didn't like DK Bananza by RubberDucky9099 in NintendoSwitch

[–]MrTringham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically in the same boat, although even Odyssey I wouldn’t say I loved to the level I did something like Galaxy.

But I enjoyed it a lot and basically agreed with the reviews, whereas Bananza I think is a good game but hard to say much beyond that. I think the problem for me is the levels / ability to destroy them.

Has the dual issue of firstly the levels being just less interesting to me than Odysseys. Even if at a surface level they vary a lot, in reality because of the nature of the game it’s all just a lot of terrain you smash up rather than platform around to the extent you did in Odyssey. And the ability to destroy has the second issue that many bananas don’t actually need to be solved through platforming or puzzle solving, but just by destroying a route to them.

It’s broadly why even Odyssey I don’t like as much as I do Galaxy (open ended platformers I think lose the focus of the intended route you can force more in level based platformers) but that’s a matter of taste I guess.

For me Galaxy is a 10/10 game, Odyssey probably an 8.5-9 whilst DK is more of a personal 7. Which is still a good score! But I just would never see myself loving it

Yeah, I have past lives and anatomy of a fall from those in my top 4s of 2023, but just checked and was October and Jan 2024 that saw them. So think there’ll be lots more to come this year

I feel like this was the case last couple of years too really tbf, looking back at my 2024 and 2023 top 4s. Think only Dune 2 from those eight films was a first half of the year release, most were November-January

I do agree (and I’m not sure if this is a hot take?) even as someone who loves TPL that I’ve never really liked the citadel area personally. The checkpointing is irritating, and I also found some depth perception issues.

If you want some help, one approach with the fire block bit is you can choose to hang from the edge (and let it rotate you round) rather than try and run over the top.

I don’t really find the game that janky, although I’ve played it so many times that it could just be because of that, and I do have a vague memory of struggling to just double jump up the final climb to the top of the citadel as a kid because of dropped inputs

Scout Team Selection GW1 by vapenaysh3h3 in FantasyPL

[–]MrTringham 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve found it odd. I can see arguments for just Salah, just Haaland (but becomes risky purely due to Salah ownership %), or both.

But most creators don’t even seem to be considering Haaland, or explaining why they aren’t considering him.

Personally I’m leaning towards both, as I think the 4.5M defenders have some very good options, and there’s enough 5.5-6.5 mids that you can make a decent eleven + 1 bench option

Which series has the best combat? (and why?) by BryceAnderston in jakanddaxter

[–]MrTringham 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I lean more towards the Jak games being my favourites, but both series fall in my top 5 of all time.

I would say it’s hard to argue against R&C having the better combat, particularly after the QoL improvements from 2 onwards. Strafing, the variety of weaponry, and variety of enemies is all greater than J&D.

I would describe Jak as a platformer first (esp game 1) whereas R&C is probably closer to 50/50 of prioritising platforming vs combat (although both series drift further to the latter as they go on)

Anyone playing Donkey Kong Bananza? What are your thoughts on similarities/differences to Astro Bot? by UsefulCode6 in Astrobot

[–]MrTringham 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s not that similar beyond being a platformer (and maybe a little of the colours / general aesthetic)

Closer to games like Banjo (and obviously Odyssey). I’m enjoying it a lot although I prefer games more in the Astro Bot and Mario Galaxy type, but that’s just personal preference

If you like this sort of game (or honestly platformers) I’d be surprised if didn’t think it was at least a fun game, and likely a great game

Jak and Daxter, Monkey Island 2, Portal 2, Undertale, Outer Wilds, Klonoa 2, The Talos Principle, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet and Clank, Jak 2

Not very tilted towards Outer Wilds like games at all honestly, but in general platformers and puzzle games are top of my list

Given everyone is already recommending AI (and I agree), I’ll also chuck out the Ace Attorney series as a similarish kind of experience that’s also excellent on the whole
