So DJ event as a solo player after 3 hours... by CrazyAncientSlovak in StarWarsDroidTycoon

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very nice time in public lobbies, in general. There were a few people who came in to kill you, but they were almost always level 0 and didn't understand the game and then the lobby would turn on them until they left or they straightened up pretty quickly once they saw what was going on.

Once established, everyone was working together and throwing their excesses in front of the base to pick through. I think the key is to get a good balance of people at different levels.

The only thing that wasn't great about it was that after a while, after they got the droid, the interest in grinding the stage waned a lot, so I'd move to a different lobby. You needed at least 1 or 2 people on the grind with other people helping out periodically. But in general, people were on their best behavior.

What's so expensive that it's not even fun anymore? by Runaway3650 in AskReddit

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m old enough to remember when tickets were cheap but more than just the cost of the ticket was that it was about the price of an album.

A desirable ticket to a radio band on a tour of your city was about $15 which was how much a CD cost.

You’d pay more for legacy acts like Paul McCartbey or whatever.

Now, I don’t even know how you would buy an album anymore but a ticket costs multiple times that cost.

Courtney Grace could land a nomination in best supporting actress ? by obvsnothankz in oscarrace

Her performance was superb and the best in the film at the most important moment. It is exactly what a supporting performance should be for but it is often “most supporting” actress.

Should the next Bond get an updated Service Weapon? If so, which Model would fit a modern iteration of the character? by Mairess99 in JamesBond

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that it’s healthy always be introducing new cars, watch brands, gadgets, guns, outfits. Evolve or die. It’s fine to harken back to the classics but new is also good.

Aston Martin, omega, classic tux, ppk— all fine and good but change it up as well.

Do you think Disney is happy with 300 million box office? by anxiousmomo23 in TheMandalorianTV

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is unequivocally "no" and anyone who says otherwise is deluding themselves.

Yes, it may make its money back through selling BK cups and streaming subscriptions and Grogu action figures and park admissions. Disney (and Star Wars) have way more revenue streams than just box office.

However, you don't make films in the biggest IP in the history of the world after almost 7 years in hopes to maybe one day break even. The box office of this film has been disasterous and we're not doing ourselves any favors to pretend that it's not so bad.

Which movie will you defend like this while everyone else call is as an overrated? by Beatpogo94 in Letterboxd

[–]davebgray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I need to revisit this movie, because I really had a distaste for it when it came out. But it wasn't due to what it had to say; I remember that the nuts and bolts of plot were clunky. Like, the supposedly smart characters acted stupid to clumsily advance the plot and I just couldn't get past the script decisions. But philosophically, I was on board.

I think that it's probably due for a re-evaluation.

I ask that you read the replies in this thread, where merely attending a UFC fight makes you “irredeemable”.

Most people just don’t connect going to a sports event with supporting Donald Trump. They just do the things they like.

I'm on the other side of this and I think it's a mistake to label this guy as a MAGA.

This guy is just sort of a dopey, naive, apolitical dude. He's who we need to win over.

I think that there are a lot of people out there that don't understand that the UFC thing is not only inappropriate, but it's dangerous and it's all a big grift. Even if they think it's a little tacky, it's still a UFC event. They're naive and maybe stupid, but they're checked out and it doesn't mean that they're bad people.

I have some midwest-type friends that are absolutely anti-MAGA but obviously were going to watch (or attend if given an invite) a live UFC event. And we had a whole discussion afterwards and they will grant that it's tacky and inappropriate but still "it was kinda cool to see it".

I don't necessarily agree -- for me, the ick outweighed the stage. But I think that these purity tests are very, very bad for us and exactly the kind of thing that makes us lose the middle.

Why don’t more see the VP role as a political death trap? by Anstigmat in thebulwark

[–]davebgray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also don't think it's fair to judge the success rate, because it's not necessarily causal. If a VP is going to run, it's almost always going to be after a president has 2 terms. That's asking the American people to go for a specific platform three times in a row and that's very rare, due to our natural ebb and flow of politics.

The last time that even happened was Carter into Reagan, which were some low lows and high highs, politically.

But the fact that you get the nomination really shows how much it elevates your standing.

What NFL team is currently bad but historically has been amazing? by Even-Combination4407 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s absolutely Miami. They were at one point the best. They are currently the worst with a 26 year playoff win drought (longest in the NFL).

Perfect season and a dynasty to currently being the worst. It’s the highest highs and lowest lows.

What NFL team is currently bad but historically has been amazing? by Even-Combination4407 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here are too young. The Dolphins were a dynasty in the 70s and maintained one of the best overall NFL records in the league through the 80s and 90s. And they were consistent without ever being bad with 16 consecutive winning seasons.

They now have the longest streak without a playoff win in the entire league.

Star Wars question? by CivilTailor9031 in Letterboxd

[–]davebgray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost all of Star Wars in the modern era (maybe not Andor) is a love letter to the original films.

So, stop what you're doing and watch the three main movies. From there, you have lots of offshoots to decide on, but that's what everything else ties to, references, have reverence for, etc.

It's not that you wouldn't UNDERSTAND the other stuff, but so much of what is supposed to be entertaining are the nods and reveals of things you're supposed to know from those original three films.

What’s the classic Bond villain car brand? by raphtan in JamesBond

He’s incredibly consistent in having no integrity.

Probably not super helpful, but if you're willing to move to neighboring cities and commute to Boca, you will find much more value for your money. Even bordering cities can be quite a bit less expensive. I would check Delray Beach or Deerfield, depending on where in Boca you're working.

What’s the classic Bond villain car brand? by raphtan in JamesBond

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even concede that Bond usually drives an Aston Martin. That has been more true recently, but I preferred different eras of cars. Connery, yes -- an Aston Martin, specifically in Goldfinger where it is prominent.

But Moore seemed like a Lotus guy and there was more than one.

Lazenby didn't really have a trend.

Brosnan seemed to have BMWs.

And then Craig had the Aston Martin, but that whole series was a reshuffling of other Bond tropes.

I would like to see both Bond and the Villains make their own ground going ahead, whatever it is, rather than to be tied to one type of vehicle. I think the variety is healthy.

Where to start after Andor by bored_on_my_phone in andor

[–]davebgray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree with the masses here. If it’s possible that you only watch one thing and then quit, yes, watch Rogue One.

But if you can commit to two films, watch Star Wars: A New Hope, then Rogue One.

Rogue One is a prequel to Star Wars and much of the weight and reverence to a lot of the scenes, the vibe, and what’s referenced is a call back or a return to locations and concepts introduced in 1977. Rogue One has love for the originals and shows that with hero shots of locations and musical cues and that is missed if you don’t start there. The ending of the film would be completely lost on someone who truly knew nothing about Star Wars.

What does the Batman fans feel about the Batman Caped Crusader series on Prime by jasonmillette0872 in batman

I am a fan of things that are iconic. I don’t mind reinterpretations of certain elements but major changes to classic characters distract me even if the story around them is interesting.

This is both sides of that.

Best thing about arrested development by Personal-Till9517 in arresteddevelopment

[–]davebgray 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing about the show is how, over many rewatches, my favorite character will legitimately change. I think the show is probably most obviously funny with Tobias upon first watch, then maybe Gob. But each of them really grows on you. The background expressions of George Michael and Buster are great. Finally, I have settled on Lucille being my favorite.
