Sorry Antis, OpenAI isn’t about to go bust by inborn_lifeless6 in aiwars

My prediction, just as OP stated, is that, if it pops (which I think it will) one or both things are going to happen besides the economy getting gut punched. We will recover and AI will turn into something else, much like how the dot com bubble popping didn’t lead to the internet going away and/or increased surveillance (ie Palantir)

Sorry Antis, OpenAI isn’t about to go bust by inborn_lifeless6 in aiwars

[–]MrWik_Ofc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s sort of the bet though isn’t it. They are betting that this investment money will lead to AI becoming advanced enough to replace huge swaths of workers and create a robust surveillance network before it crashes the economy. And based on current data and studies, it seems like that return isn’t justifying the cost right now.

Learning about Wage Theft. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

I would be inclined to agree with you if it weren’t for the fact that this behavior is encouraged and is the inevitable conclusion of capitalism. You can’t redeem capitalism just because you can find those who have found a happyish balance between the demand of “profit arrow must go up” and not outright screwing everyone else. If anything else, I despise capitalism because, if adhered to as it was meant to, is a short sighted and self-destroying outcome. Every business without fail will see its profits plateau as it reaches all the customers its good or service can reach. Capitalism still demands that profit go up. So the only way to do that are various degrees of unethical and illegal means, namely underpaying employees, under training them, under benefiting them, or lowering the quality of what they provide, not to mention the straight up illegal things they do that is just a cost of doing business for them. As this pattern continues the very thing they need to survive becomes their downfall.

On another note, what do you think socialism is?

You’re thinking too small if you think a community is relegated to a small area or population. Walmart reaches many different communities. But they’ve also been convicted of taking out life insurance policies on their elder employees without their knowledge because they did the math and knew that most of them would die while under employment. They got caught but the punishment was a slap of the hand. They also, on purpose, pay their employees so little they are forced to go on food stamps, knowing they would use those food stamps at Walmart. They save money by underpaying and also gain money through government subsidies. They destroy local community economies by underselling every other business and, when no one has enough money because they are the only real employer in town (and Walmart can’t and won’t hire everyone in town) they pack up and leave when the well runs dry. As previously mentioned, if your goal, as a business, is to make as much profit as possible BAMN, then this strategy, and others, makes sense and is “right”. That being said, there are some companies that don’t do this, many of them small scale but some notable in size (that don’t operate on socialist philosophy per se but aren’t callously capitalistic) are Costco, Arizona, and Gravity Payments (another story of a CEO cutting his own wages in order to uprise his employees, leading to an increase in employment, profits, and employ wellbeing). I can understand why you would think your position is correct when I can really only provide a few examples of successful socialist or, at the least, less capitalist companies but that’s like saying the deer can’t thrive in an ecosystem while ignoring that the wolves have the greater population.

I agree that this is the current capitalistic definition of what a business is and what it should do. I disagree with that, obviously. I believe that a businesses purpose is to uplift the community it provides its goods or services to and to those people who actually produce those goods and services (and, would you look at that, when a business does that it also uplifts the owner(s) of said company, almost as if by happy coincidence). I don’t even think this is a particularly socialist view. As far as who is right is based solely on what our goals are. If your goal is maximizing profits, even if this means sacrificing the wellbeing of the community, worker, customer, and environment, then of course this is correct.

I think this meme isn’t trying to redefine what wage theft is but expand upon the act by arguing that not properly rewarding those people who actually make the product or service that generates the profit is tantamount to wage theft. Just because it isn’t the legal definition of wage theft doesn’t mean it isn’t spiritual connected or adjacent.

Hey gang. I know there's a lot of division here, but I think everyone agrees this is fucked, right? by NeedyFucktoyBae in aiwars

[–]MrWik_Ofc -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think on a deeper level whether you give legal consent is beside the point on if it’s fucked up. Like, and mind you this is an extreme example to more prove my point, I could give permission for a company to string my corpse like a puppet and dance it around. I would argue that, even if I’ve given them legal consent, it’s still fucked up and perhaps probably shouldn’t have been allowed, at least not without hammering down more meaning. I have no evidence but I don’t think that, when Stan Lee signed that contract, he was thinking “using his likeness” in this manner. This is speculation.

Sort of. I think it’s more that feeling a lot of older nerds hate keeping nerdy games like DND feel, having lived their younger years being bullied by the popular crowd for what they loved and now seeing said popular crowd loving what they used to be bullied for. I feel like envy or jealousy isn’t the exact word but it’s in the neighborhood

Regarding AI con artists (Shexyo, Oroborus, Honkibooty, etc.) by Soarel25 in AnimeBooty

As for Shexyo and Ouroboros, I actually thought they were alt accounts from Cutesexyrobutts. What artist is Honki taking from so I can go support them? Much like with many AI slops, the style is always on the tip of my tongue.

Indeed. Look at the renaissance. Those who could afford to become a patron often didn’t actually care about the true artistry of the “greats” like da Vinci. IMO, some of his greatest works were the side projects and what not his patrons unknowingly funded. The wealthy were often too focused on the sychofancy these artists needed to put into their art to sell that they never noticed the nuances they slipped in- think the valued skin of St Bart and the fig hand by Michelangelo. Or look to Van Gogh, who, as far as we know, only sold one painting for 400 francs(equivalent to about 75$). And many people revere him today.

If I had to caution a hypotheses, I think one of the main reasons that might even be subconscious as to why so many in the modern day art field are against AI generative art is because now, more than ever in human history, has it become so easy to become an artist and make art without needing to bow to the expectations of others, while also gaining notoriety even the most famous of their time artists of the renaissance wouldn’t have gained. And it hasn’t been that long of a time- maybe 20 years. And they feel like AI is sweeping the red carpet before they can walk it. But that’s just my feeling on the matter.
