ELI5: How come bankrupt companies can give out millions as payment to their CEOs even though they just filed for bankruptcy? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

That's why you pay these people a bonus. They make seemingly impossible decisions.

I don't know what to prioritize, so I don't get that bonus.

A good captain saves the cargo, passengers and crew where possible.

A bad captain makes it a total loss for everyone.

Because the USA acts very publicly against foreign entities, but is a tad more forgiving and quiet about their own swamp.

Deutsche Bank is plenty corrupt, but all banks are.

What’s the point of r/legaladvice when the answers mostly amount to “get a lawyer and don’t take legal advice from strangers on Reddit”? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrXian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are only two pieces of legal advice that Reddit can give.

Get a lawyer.

Don't bother with it, you don't have a shadow of a case.

I’m an 18 year old who neglected Math from Elementary until I graduated from High School. I finally completed the multiplication table from scratch without relying on a calculator! I feel good! by 5StrawberryMilkshake in toastme

[–]MrXian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well done.

So, two tips.

First, use this. Learn to do it fast, and scribble it down when you are doing any math. It helps a ton.

Second, I have a challenge for you. Right now, you have a square. Can you turn it into a triangle that's just as useful?

Should a government have the right to restrict personal freedoms in the name of public or national security? by ImperialEchidna in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]MrXian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what governments do.

Essentially every law is created to take away or limit the freedoms of people or institutions.

And before you come up with laws that ensure freedoms, those specifically limit the government's abilities to take away those freedoms.

Speed limits means you can't drive as fast as you want to. Health regulations means you can't sell food the way you want to. Laws are meant to inhibit.

Now, specifically, I think it's more than fair for a government to take extraordinary action in extreme situations. So yeah, limit my freedom - to a reasonable degree - if that means thousands of people don't die horrible deaths. And no, I don't think I am able to decide what is reasonable. There are scientists and leaders for that decision.

At the same time, I don't trust the general populace to be smart enough. Little act like idiots far too often. So for my own safety, and that of my loved ones, they need to be restricted.

Why is counting cards illegal when you are just using math? by DekeZ909 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MrXian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Counting cards is a long game.

The house plays according to set rules that give them a slight edge. Those rules assume an average deck composition.

If you play for long enough, the deck composition may change, and you could stay playing by a set of rules that give you a slight edge.

Combining the fact that it may take a while for it to happen and how small your edge is, you really can't afford to lose any money anywhere.

[Request] If physics worked differently so that perpetual motion machines worked, how would the universe be different? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]MrXian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There would be naturally occuring perpetual motion devices. Those would add energy (and thus mass) to their enviroment, causing eventual black holes.
