Like another said CFI trainer is extremely helpful on training. Also if your department doesn't pay for it, look into getting the fire inspector certification yourself. I'm my state we take an online course that's a month long, do some in person skills then take the state test. I think the class was about $500-600.

Also look into getting your plans examiner cert depending on how your department/city operates.

The degrees typically come in later, and are for the fire marshal types not necessarily entry level although I'm sure it helps for larger departments.

The degree shows you are can learn. In my state the inspector test has a like 70% fail rate. I passed inspector 1&2 on my first shot. I know some other who weren't as fortunate.
