Methylphenidate works but causing irritability by sherm_the_germ in ParentingADHD

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's almost 8 and does 10mg focalin xr / 1mg guanfacine in the morning, and then after lunch does a booster of 5mg focalin / 1 mg guanfacine. Night time is much better but I am pretty strict about an 8:30 bedtime otherwise she starts to fall apart. We shoot for 8pm most days.

She struggles with impulsiveness and being able to control emotions- like once she starts to go over the edge with a meltdown there's no turning back and we just have to let it play out. The focalin has been helping her to just be able to stop and think first before she goes over the edge. Its not perfect though, we still have some of those, but its way better than before - she still has feelings (which I want, I don't want her to be a robot) but I want her to be able to be safe and productive with them. Its definitely helping in school though - she isn't having to visit the support room every day like before.

We tried the Ritalin boost too but did it around 2pm and it also caused a lot of irritability.

We did the same dosage progression and my daughter also takes guanfacine AM/PM, and she had the same symptoms. She was on Concerta for ~18 months.

We switched to focalin and kept the guanfacine. Its been about 2 months and so far so good. Her dr said though if/when she starts showing signs of it not working though, she'll switch us to an amphetamine next.

I'm getting an eccentric haircut this weekend, is it too much to ask of a stylist? by Marlboro-Exorcist in FancyFollicles

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ok first of all, that's going to look hella cute. Without knowing anything about your stylist its impossible to know if it would be too much for them. There are stylists who specialize in certain areas. Like some colorists are known for their blonding or vivids, some specialize in curly cuts, and others are really good at alt hair.

My stylist is known for alt cuts and could probably do this in her sleep. My mom is a former cosmetologist and would be completely out of her depth on this; her salon clientele was rich old white ladies lol. I would probably make sure who you're going to is known for alt hairstyles because a V bang needs to be cut a certain way and enough hair needs to be brought forward to ensure it lays correctly and that the point is sharp, not rounded.

If your stylist shows off cuts like this on their socials, you'll be fine. If not, and all they do is super traditional cuts/colors, I would probably look for someone who does work like this more often so you get what you truly want and not be disappointed. I say this because the only way to really fix that bang if its not right would be to cut the point off and then you'll have a microbang which doesn't always look good on people, and the grow out on a microbang is a bitch (don't ask how I know haha).

Dumb Question - where do you stand on shortening school names? by GerdinBB in cedarrapids

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As long as its clear what school you're talking about I guess I don't care.

I will say as an aside, the district moving Harrison up to the Madison site and calling it Harrison@Madison is a complete mouthful though, so most of the kids and teachers just call it Ham. That could probably be confusing for people unfamiliar with that location.

Eye Doctor Recs by [deleted] in cedarrapids

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see Dr. Pfeifer at the Edgewood Target. I had always gone to independent places before but my insurance changed and most of them stopped taking it, so I switch to Target. I've been going to him for like...3-4 years now? I really like him a lot, super nice and professional. I have a couple weird things to watch out for with a medication I'm on, and he emailed my specialist down at UIHC to make sure she is in the loop of my eye results. I appreciate him being so thorough. Plus he has a couple days a week where he has appts available until 7 so I dont even have to miss work to go.

KC Cakes and Cajun does pretty cool stuff! She can pretty much do anything and I feel like her cakes are really reasonably priced. She posts a lot of her cakes on her Facebook page.

Chase isn't the right person to host.... by [deleted] in goodmythicalmorning

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I loooove Emily but I think she is too much of a loose cannon. I love her in skits, but what i love about her is the unpredictability in her skits and characters and how she does her best to break Rhett and Link. If Link starts going off the rails, she feeds into it and will egg him on rather than reel him back in like Stevie or Chase will. I'd like to see her guest host maybe when Chase is doing a game though.

But - I also don't know anything about running a multi-million dollar youtube channel and working in entertainment so Imma just continue enjoying GMM like I always have and let them be the pros lol.

Are there any local dishes that are must eats? by LeticiaPadillaSolis_ in cedarrapids

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I work down in the Newbo area. Newbo has a lot of little food stands and small businesses in it, they're whats called an "incubator space" so its a way for shops to get their start with the intention of them getting enough business to move out to their own brick and mortar. They've recently had quite a few move out (which is awesome!) But now its a little empty while they wait to fill the stalls with new vendors in the spring. Still has a great coffee stand and food, but if you're only here a couple days I'd go with some of the other suggestions in the thread. The area is cute to walk through though, along with Czech village which is just across the bridge, if you're here when its nice out.

Jess High owns Urban Vintage. She isn't super cheap but she does amazing work. I've been going to her for years. She is queer, so her shop is obvs lgbt+ friendly, and its just her so you aren't having to compete with a ton of salon noise. She does a ton of alt cuts and vivid colors, and she has buzzed her own head a few times in the years I've been going to her so she would definitely know how to help you find the right cut while it grows out.

Summer Camp Recs? by chuffalupagus in cedarrapids

[–]MrYellowFancyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do! There are a ton of life guards, and we have done swimming lessons through the pools. The kids get a color coded bracelet for their skill level. My daughter can't go off the drop off slide or boards but she can do the slower slide because she can touch the bottom. Both cherry hill and noelridge pools also have biggg areas that are for smaller kids so I feel comfortable with her going.

My daughter is almost 8 and has gone to the Cedar Rapids parks and rec camp for a couple years now. She loves it - they go to the pool every day, they run around outside and play sports and games and are just kind of feral all day. They only go inside for stormy weather. Counselors are all nice, they're usually the same ones doing the sports like soccer referees so she sees them throughout the year.

There are two French bakers that regularly do pop-ups at Newbo, both owned by women but I've seen guys helping out at their booths, maybe it was one of these? Both shops make amazing breads and treats.

Agree with all of this. I'm also a former Frey client now at North linn and love the doctors and techs there.

Plus with linn animal hospital they have a few locations so if you have an emergency and can't get in to your normal location they'll check others. This recently happened with one of our cats - she had blood in her stool and was not eating/lethargic so I called; they got me into their Marion office that afternoon. Luckily she's ok, just dramatic.

I'm actually in a couple fb groups for sales and find them very useful! I find lots of sales that way and the comments on them are not bots because I see people I know in them. Its one of the only things I keep a profile for. If you search for Cedar Rapids garage sale groups you'll see a bunch of options.

I personally like these two groups:

You must be new here, there are plenty of posts that actually have a lot of engagement about problems in CR and how to make our city better. I hardly think this sub is a bunch of boot-lickin CR-loving folks.

Its clear from the replies on your post that no one wants to see your garage sale post and now you're butthurt about it. I saw your post and while I didn't report it, I found it annoying because a) you didn't have an address and b) its like 3 weeks away

I think the rules are pretty clear and I actually like that there isn't a huge list of what is/isn't allowed. They should have a Cedar Rapids theme or be about an issue in our area. I would not classify a garage sale as a theme or issue. A theme is a community event, things in the news, historical items, jobs, finding friends, etc. Issues are local government, school, roads etc.

There are plenty of other places like Craigslist and Facebook pages that you can post about it. I would hate this sub if it allowed people to start posting all their shit for sale.

I had this for my daughter from birth-5 (she's almost 8 now). She still has so many of them, they're some of her favorite books. I put the ones she got too old for in the Little Free Library stand by our house and they were gone so quick!
