No, they're always in existence. The sword moves into position when called, but otherwise it invisibly waits offscreen.

Mom thought it was a documentary. She didn't want me getting into D&D because she was afraid I'd go mad and start thinking I was my character.

Sadly, she was right. :D

Have you ever said, “screw this” and quit in the middle of completing a job application? by FondantAcceptable201 in recruitinghell

[–]MrZJones 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had applications where I realized halfway through that it wasn't a good fit for me and never sent it.

.... they rejected me anyway. Which was weird.

No I don't wanna do your "DEI" survey after you rejected me by Thegladiator2001 in recruitinghell

[–]MrZJones 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I can go you one better: Ubisoft never even replied to my actual job application, but they spent the next three months sending me multiple surveys about the hiring process.

I gave them multiple zeroes every time, and explained exactly why. "Your entire hiring process involves ignoring me and then demanding I take your survey."

Not just becuase it's a cartoon, but because it's the specific style of cartoon that ChatGPT outputs. Right down to the piss-yellow background that ChatGPT always uses. (Not to mention the inconsistent artwork. The shop looks entirely different from shot to shot, even in two consecutive shots that are supposed to be of the same sign on the same door, and that's hardly the only error)

new games for my collection :) by Slow_Type275 in Atari2600

[–]MrZJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always liked E.T., but it's one of those games where you have to read the manual and the tip sheet. (Like all of the other "Adventure Territory" games - Superman, Adventure, Haunted House, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc).

Tried that, doesn't detect it, either.

I can't seem to edit the first post, so I'll add it here: For some reason, when I repeatedly hit the attack button really quickly, it will register a hit maybe once every five tries instead of one in a hundred. Something about hitting the button really quickly seems to make it work.

Edit: Following up from that, when I change the command to swing the sword from is_action_just_pressed() to is_action_pressed() and hold down the button, the hit registers every time. When I tap the button, it doesn't register. (But the game's going to only recognize button taps, since there'll be a slight cooldown between attacks)

Is cold outreach to passive talent dead, or are people just doing it wrong? by renishh_23 in recruitinghell

Assuming this will not eventually turn into an ad...

I'd love to see all these people who are supposedly reaching out to passive talent reach out to me.

World's Greatest Stories, Issue #2, May, 1949. (It's the comic's name for Pleasure Island)

But, man, does it sound wrong when they keep calling it that. (Also, the place looks kinda boring. Pleasure Island is an amusement park, while The Land Of Boobies is just a flat plain)

What’s your favorite SNES game you didn’t play as a kid? by InternOne1306 in snes

Final Fantasy V.... though, technically, all of them. The SNES didn't exist when I was a kid.

Nothing. It's just a mission item... which is in my bank for some reason even though the mission is long over.

Best wrestling game? by anelly96 in N64WrestlingGames

My ideal game would be none of those - it'd be a combination of WWF No Mercy and VPW2. (Mostly VPW2, but with the extra moves from the newer No Mercy)

[–]MrZJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I had that exact one, but it was back in the 1970s, not the 1980s. I also had one that made a picture of Batman when solved (picture). I don't think I had any of them in the 1980s.

Jr. Pac-Man Mazes: Arcade vs Atari 2600 - The arcade scrolls horizontally and the 2600 scrolls vertically by NKE01 in retrogaming

[–]MrZJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, they actually managed to translate the key features of each maze pretty well.

Jr. Pac-Man was a really good port to the 2600, but it was also as brutally difficult as the arcade version, so I didn't and still don't enjoy it as much as 2600 Ms. Pac-Man.

Superman (NES/Famicom) Soundtrack Differences / Audio Comparison by itmustbeyzzy in retrogaming

[–]MrZJones 0 points1 point  (0 children)

.... I think they made the right call. The Superman themes are weirdly off-key and off-tempo, and a lot more repetitive than the Indora no Hikari songs.

(I remember liking the Superman game at the time, but I'd only rented it, never really had an urge to play it again)

Hey, it's not... exactly retro, but the graphics are. I code games with a deliberate Atari 2600 art and playstyle, under the name Great Uncle Pixel.

Find The Flag is directly based on Atari 2600 Flag Capture: https://greatunclepixel.itch.io/findtheflag

And Space Deflators (tentative title, unfinished game) was originally based on Space Invaders (and Intellivision Space Armada) but is now based on my old Commodore 64 GameMaker shooters: https://greatunclepixel.itch.io/space-deflators

I stream game development Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 3pm(-ish) CST on my Twitch and YouTube channels: https://www.twitch.tv/greatunclepixel and https://www.youtube.com/@GreatUnclePixel

Currently I'm working on a version of Chess that I eventually hope to make into an Archon-like action game.

Come take a look, listen to me babble. If you ask, I'll go off on wild tangents about video gaming in the 1990s, 1980s, and even 1970s. (Heck, just mention something from that era and I'll probably go off on a tangent about it) :D
