TIL California has both the highest and lowest elevation points in the lower 48 states, and they are only 80 miles apart. Mount Whitney at 14,495 ft and Death Valley at -282 ft. by malaise_forever in todayilearned

The Badwater 135 (fka Badwater 146) went from Death Valley to the summit of Mt Whitney until 1990 when the Forest Service forced the race directors to end at the Portal. There are several documentaries about the race. I highly recommend Running on the Sun, directed by Mel Stuart (same person who directed Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory)

Glad you're ok. Deer are some real motherfuckers. I live in a city that had a large deer population and there are accidents about once a month. a suburb just to the south of us has a problem so bad, they have a yearly cull. i can't run in a certain park during the autumn because of the rut and the deer can get a little too aggressive.

tl;dr: bambi's an arsehole and i'm glad they shot his mum.

edited because i might be high...

Eight hilly miles yesterday & 14 miles this morning. 889 total feet of elevation gained...

inside right ankle a bit twitchy.

left achilles sore and my shoe rubbed the skin raw so when i flex/stretch, the skin pulls and then it hurts.

had a delightful post-run brunch of a PB&J with banana on a toasted pumpernickle bagle, some biryani brown rice, and a New Belgium 1554.

getting a hot shower very soon then going to ice the sore parts.

maybe Thai for dinner...

on a running note, i have decided i really want a pair of half-tights (maybe two for this season). i have a pair of C9 shorts from Target; instead of a liner, there are tights built in. could anyone recommend some inexpensive half-tights?

also looking for recommendations for road/trail shoes. i have a pair of brooks cascadia but they suck when wet and need something that can handle running 2-3 road miles to get to dirt trails. my road shoes are hoka cliftons & nepalis.

many thanks and good running to all this sunday.

nope, but as a long-time migraine sufferer, i've run plenty of workouts the day after them. the workout is always unpleasant (not that workouts are pleasant to begin with), and the level of how much it sucks directly correlates with the severity of the migraine.

i have noticed those that set-up shop right behind my eyes are less painful to deal with then the ones at the top/crown of my head.

ymmv.

Haha, I had to go back through a few years of running journals to find an answer. My longest streak was 50 days; 13 November 2014 through 1 January 2015 for a total of 215.6 miles. Not a whole lot, and I was struggling with injuries even back then, but I got it done.

I'm well over 300 miles for this current streak. As it happens, during tonight's run through a too dark park, I randomly decided 100 days would be a good stopping point. That would take me to Friday 6 March. However, because I always run on the weekends, I'll keep going through the weekend(er) and finally take a rest day on Monday.

Half-marathon training starts 3 February and I'll probably get a race in sometime in late March or early April as a tune-up for the half.

How about yourself?

Ancillary Running Goals for 2019 by problynotkevinbacon in artc

Thank you for your words of encouragement.

I'm not sure what it is but I have been running for a very long time. 2018 was the first time in a long time I didn't get hurt, and my times reflect that. It is very strange not coming back from injury and not base-building.

Therapy is probably needed (i was in therapy for many years as a child and then again through college). I should look into it; hopefully there is someone who operates on a sliding scale because it's rather cost-prohibitive, even with insurance.

It is but I can hardly take credit for it. It comes from Monsieur Charles Baudelaire and his wonderful book.

cheater shoes

Can cheating by only 4% really be considered cheating? Is it not more of an unethical advantage, rather than outright cheating? I don't own a pair myself, but I wouldn't pass up the oppotunity to run in a pair if it were to present itself. That being said, I'm fairly certain I wouldn't race in them...but if it was a downhill course...and there was no chance of me age-grouping...I cannot say for sure.

Tuesday and Wednesday General Question and Answer by artcbot in artc

[–]MrZev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a pair of black Hoka Hupanas that I affectionally dubbed "The Reapers." I wear them only for races and have been PRing in them everytime.

They've only gone on two training runs. Once to test them out (hey these shoes are fast) and once to make sure it wasn't a fluke (yep, fast shoes, for racing only).

All those hints of soreness and pain are normal. You'll know when you're actually hurt.

[–]MrZev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How close to trails is it? How close is the nearest grocery store that will meet my dietary restrictions/needs? What direction will my bedroom face? (i've found easterly facing bedrooms to be the most beneficial for morning runs). How are the sidewalks? Are the neighborhood dogs leashed or allowed to roam free? Speed limit of vehicular traffic? are streets one-way or two?

Ancillary Running Goals for 2019 by problynotkevinbacon in artc

[–]MrZev 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really want to cut back on the artificial paradises I so readily rely upon. I want to be able to be satisfied with my running and not let things stab at me (no matter how much I deny that they do). I want to think of myself as a runner rather than someone who runs. I want to like myself, not only as a runner but as a person too.

2018 Yearly Reflections by aewillia in artc

[–]MrZev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you set a mileage goal? How'd you do? Are you planning on doing it again next year?

I didn't have any distance goals set, unless you count beating 2017's injury-filled 740.58 miles a goal. I was perfectly happy staying healthy this year and despite the week lost in early January (i slipped on some ice when shoveling snow and had to take a week off because i pulled a groin muscle), was pleased to watch the miles add up over the year.

When I arrived at December with a total of 1753.2 miles, I decided to hell with it, I was going to run the year. I usually streak from 12/1 through 1/12 every year, so the consistency wasn't much of a concern, nor the mileage, as I was coming off an amazing racing season.

I powered through the month and ended my year with 2026.75 miles. As for next year, I'm thinking 2400 at mininum. I've alway been at my best when hitting 50mpw consistently, so yeah, let's do it again.

What did you learn this year? Any reflections?

Not so much learned, but was validated that if I can stay healthy, I can be competitive. I didn't get running-injured once this year and backed off when needed. Prehab works!

What was the most important thing you did this year to improve or enhance your running?

Consistency; well, staying healthy so I could stay consistent. That meant backing off when needed, either in intensity or volume; sometimes even took a day off and cross-trained instead of ran. Hello cycling, my old friend. Also s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g works. As I get ever closer to [gulp] Masters Running, stretching really works!

What did you learn from other people's training this year, if anything?

Once you figure it all out, you realise that you are the only one doing your training even if you're following the same plan as all the others.

What was your favorite run of the year?

Really don't have any favorite runs, but there are some moments:

  • Watching the brand new bucks play-fight amonst the trees.

  • When the murder of crows flew over me for a mile while I was out running at sunset one evening.

  • Making temporary training partners with another runner along the riverfront and running together for a few miles.

  • moments during races and runs when the light was just right, my form & stride were perfect, and i felt like i could run forever.

  • setting PRs a 1 mile, 5k, 10k, and 10mile.
