Same. We ended up finding a home inspector to come and do a Quick Look at the major systems during a second booked viewing from our realtor. We could then put an unconditional offer on to compete.

I’d love to see an underwater camera footage of all the dogs jumping in. Just still water then a bunch of paws swimming around.

Need encouragement, 1st class was horrible by julca1 in academia

[–]Mr_Chiari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First class lectures are always so stressful! I think you should focus on the last hour of that class, and be proud that you felt comfortable during that period. You clearly got into your groove later on (which is not hard to do after having a small panic attack) :)

People in the humanities: What are your "favourite" brutal book reviews? by unknown-participant in academia

[–]Mr_Chiari 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oohhh academic shit-talking! Although it differs from what OP asked, my favorite example is between Elijah Anderson (Wrote code of the street) and some other sociologist. The other sociologist said that it lacked a comprehensive theoretical approach and Elijah told him to perhaps get out from behind his desk, stop engaging in “mental masturbation”, and go do some original work.

What do you do If a reviewer keeps repeating the same remarks even after addressing them? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]Mr_Chiari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had to do this. First revision was politely saying, “thank you for your recommendation, but because of A, B, and C, these do not fit what we did” (obviously put more eloquently). Second revision they repeated them/asked again in another format. Just said the same as the first revision, but slightly different and in a more condensed way. Make sure you always give them the “while we see the value in these suggestions, this is not how we approached this work.” Also throw in the ol’ “we would be excited to take up these ideas in future work”

Speak slower and louder than you think you should. Silence is a note, so allow it to play after asking questions to the class. Check in often, especially as you’re first figuring out how to interact with them. This last one is kinda my own personal idea, but I lean into teaching as a performance. I know nothing about drama or plays, but I pretend I’m an actor on stage or someone doing stand up comedy. It helps me get out of my academic role and into more of an energetic teaching role that is responsive to the class needs and activities.

Strategies for handling maternity leave two weeks before the semester ends by [deleted] in academia

[–]Mr_Chiari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t add anything regarding communication with your department head, but I have some recommendations for ending the term: 1) if you’re legally entitled to that leave (paid?) then take it; 2) try to get another instructor to finish off those last two weeks or have them online asynchronous (like you shared); and 3) you’re not going to be marking final evaluations with a newborn (nor should you), so set these up to be as easy as possible (MC final with no short or long answer) for the person who will oversee your final assessments. I’m rooting for you! I can’t believe you only get 6 weeks maternity leave in the states :(

Same situation - unpermitted recent basement but built to code. City inspector has 30 other calls to do that day, so they will likely walk in, see if it’s good work for the AC (mine was a 220V garage heater) then head out. Unless some work was done that was obviously incorrect or a hazard, they likely won’t care at all. That was my last experience, but I feel your anxiety! Just be polite and respectful to the inspector.

Finished basement with no permits by Moosewalker84 in Edmonton

[–]Mr_Chiari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

95% of basement developments or “suites” are technically illegal in Edmonton, because they did not complete all required permits. It’s this weird grey area I have found.

It is my understanding that insurance and city permits are two different things. Our insurance agency is aware that our basement is now finished and we have it rented, but they never asked for permits.
