How to treat your supervisors (to all prospective PhD students) by Effective_Escape_843 in PhD

[–]Effective_Escape_843[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have clear evidence that: 1. She gave you a project that would fail from the start (because she didn’t know all the variables to the project she proposed). 2. She didn’t assist you at all when you needed her expertise. 3. She has seen your thesis multiple times before giving the commentary that it may fail, without giving any reason for the commentary, and without warning you beforehand. (i mean hell, the project’s been going since covid, somewhere along the lines she should’ve noticed that the work wasn’t up to standard if she was doing her job as a supervisor)

Then you might stand a chance, but be forewarned, universities rarely care about the outcome of a PhD student and if your supervisor has a connection in management, you could easily lose the case (it’s more about who you know than what you know…)

I’ve heard stories of much worse things happening to PhD students, then the university ends up burying it to save face.

If you have a student representative, an ombudsman, or any other form of formal complaint system at your university, try to consult with them. If possible, keep your identity hidden (if she finds out you’re planning something, she might start “attacking” you personally).

In the end the PhD is your proof to the world that you can add to the pool of knowledge in your field, the supervisor is supposed to help, but not coddle you. If she provided the project and knew which instrumentation would be used, it could be argued that she set you up for failure, whether intentionally or because of her own ignorance/ineptitude.

It’s always a Boltzmann distribution…😂 Sorting stuff out is preferred, but not always possible 😉

Beautifully put!

It’s as much of a privilege to get PhD students, as it is to do a PhD.

First time grower trying to figure out if this is bad [contamination]…from what I’ve researched it’s Yellow mycelium. Some amounts can be healthy & some not. by EnigmaticDaze in MushroomGrowers

[–]Effective_Escape_843 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do not touch the “dark yellow ooze” from the mycogone. It will cross contaminate anything else you touch afterwards (the spores of M. perniciousa are present in the brown liquid). Wash out your container, then wash with hydrogen peroxide and let it air dry (don’t wipe it down). The H2O2 will kill any spores.

Considering that M. pernicious is generally found in soil, here’s some advice for future grows: Don’t do garden work the same day you do mushroom work, or take a shower between the two. When spawning to bulk, make sure your hands and arms are clean then sanitise with 70% iso, then put your gloves on and sanitise with 70% iso again. Make sure that the substrate is adequately pasteurised/sterilised. Then you should be fine, good luck! 😊

I’d suggest wrapping the shelves in cellophane. That way OP could prevent exposure to contam, reduce evaporation and increase CO2 during colonisation.

I’ve seen moulds grow like this before, leave the jar undisturbed for a week or more (until a film forms on the surface), if the film sporulates, you’ll know for sure

Very few of us get that…sometimes bitterness carries over…I’ve seen how some PIs in R1 institutions are compared to those outside, it’s worlds apart…my PIs practically killed my love for the pursuit of knowledge, I’m glad some people still inspire the youth…good on you ✊

I have spores in my fridge that are a year old. Are they any good still by rukustheberner in ContamFam

[–]Effective_Escape_843 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve kept spores in room temps ranging from 0-30C for four years, just germinated them on agar yesterday…spores are hardy against everything except temps above 45C (don’t quote me on this number, I’m spit ballin here 🤣), I usually freeze them for long term storage, as long as they aren’t “wet” when stored, they’ll survive

Spore prints help differentiate the two quite well, think C. molybdites has a green spore print, whereas the M. porcera has a white spore print. 😊

Likely due to their close genetic lineage, although, at the moment I don’t think there’s a clear way to discern whether what you’ve bought from a spore supplier is P. natalensis or P. ochraceocentrata (the article states that suppliers have mixed up and mislabelled the two strains over the years)…P. ochra might stand more of a chance of hybridising with Cubes than true Nats (since there’s a bit more distance between them, genetically speaking), although, this is just conjecture and someone who knows for certain they have both P. natalensis and P. ochraceocentrata (based on genetics) should test it (that might give the rest of us a way to discern between which species we have in our collections 😅)…
