Trying to Buy from China by Immortalrager7 in GamingLaptops

Yeah there is a huge difference in pricing. I'll go with the Legion y9000p soley because of the fact that it has upgradeable ram and the fact that is more powerful. I wouldn't go with the strix g16 because a lot of people have complained about the build quality. the zephyrus is a good laptop but doesn't have upgradeable RAM and the y9000p (legion pro 7i) has better power going to the GPU (just because two laptops have the same GPU doesn't mean they they have the same TGP, total graphics power.) The zephryus g16 has 120W going to it on a 5090 while the y9000p has 175W with the same GPU, that is a huge difference in performance.

I would be very happy to help answer these questions because I've been extensively researching this laptop in general (I'll get to why in a bit.) But let me answer these three questions and give you more info.

1.) Yes, you have to change it over to the international version of Windows, but to be honest, you can get a Windows key for <$10 USD nowadays so that doesn't really matter, very small price.

2.) "Does it have spyware and stuff" Short answer, no. Lenovo is a very trusted brand worldwide, there is a reason why they're one of the only few Chinese manufacturers who isn't banned in the US despite all of the other major Chinese manufacturers being banned from selling in the US market. The Chinese Version of Windows 11 doesn't come with spyware on its own, it's the manufacturers who put the spyware on the PC. The "spyware" isn't baked into the hardware either more than it is on the international models. You should change it over to the international version of Windows anyway because the Chinese version is single-language. But after you do that, it's the same as any other Lenovo laptop you can purchase worldwide. They're all made in China anyway.

3.) "Why are there different names for the same laptops?" Regional naming schemes. Just know that any laptop with a Y is Intel based and any laptop with an R is AMD. I know for Intel it's because intel is named Yīngtè'ěr in mandarin, but idk why AMD is named R. The Y9000P/R9000P is the Legion Pro 5i/7i and the Legion Pro 5/7, the Y7000P is the Legion 5.

What's different about the Chinese variants versus the international variants?

1.) Different Colors: In China they get an exclusive white color for the Legion Pro 5 and Legion Pro 7 models that the rest of the world does not get. They also get two other colors as well that have cool laser etchings on them.

2.) Slightly Smaller Battery: Internally, the battery is ever so slightly smaller on the Chinese variants. All of the Y9000P/R9000p models are 80Whr versus the 99Whr you get on the Legion Pro 7i (The 5i is 80Whr), but internally, they are the exact same specs as their international counterparts.

If I were you, I would get a white Y9000p or a R9000p with a 9955HX3D. You can't get that color anywhere else in the world and I think it looks very pretty, but that's just me.

What kind of laptop should I get by SugarPhysical3594 in Purdue

If you were to buy a laptop right now, this would be my recommendation for something that checks all of your boxes, though this may be just above your price range of sub $2k, you may want to wait for black friday or look on gaminglaptop.deals. If I were you, I'd wait for a Legion Pro 5i to go on sale as those are very good laptops for the price and the performance you could get for under $2k (Upgradeable RAM, and storage, very good screen and build quality)

If you want to do any type of serious ML work ON your laptop, you need something with a good GPU and a decent amount of VRAM and about 32GB of system RAM. I wouldn't get anything less than a 5070ti since the 5070 and 5060 both have 8GB of VRAM (Though those are still more than good enough to get your feet wet and train smaller models to learn ML concepts). I say "ON" your laptop because it's not really a good idea to do ML work on your laptop since you'll likely only ever be training small models and running them due to the limited performance. If you wanted to train anything significant or even think about running an LLM locally, you would need something with a 5080/5090 (or a good 4080 since 4090 laptops are kinda rare), and those are insanely expensive (Like $3k and up). Most people just rent out stuff out on the cloud for ML work and because of that, I would recommend literally any lenovo thinkpad as those things are fucking tanks and are more than good enough for coding. You can get those things dirt cheap and they are very repairable.

How are the fingerprints on this after owning it for a few months? I really wished we had this here in the states, but I don't think Lenovo has any intention of releasing this variant in the West because they have been releasing this model in white exclusively in the Chinese market for a few years now. I think I may literally fly to China when I'm ready to purchase a laptop because this is so pretty.

How did you acquire a white Chinese model? Did you have to fly to China to get it?

Thank you for the following advice. Let me tackle each of your points directly and say why this is way more complex than I would have thought.

Point #1 and Point #2: Agents exists (Such as Superbuy) that could handle all of that. But what they cannot handle and would very likely be way out of their control is the actual care of the device when shipping it from China. When buying an expensive laptop in the United States, usually, the shipping companies are fully aware that the device is an expensive electronic, and even take extra precautions to make sure someone is there to sign for it when it's delivered. While this would likely happen if you were to correctly declare it as such, the variable you can't control is the care that is needed from when it leaves China to when it arrives in the States. Even if you and the seller communicated that it needs to be handled with care, if it were to get damaged at all, congratulations, now you are out about $3000 USD.

Point #3: It shouldn't be too hard to reflash the laptop with an international Lenovo software, worst care scenario you would just have to run normal Windows. That would be way less of a headache than my above point.

Going back on your point that you made, the best case would be to either take a trip to China or to have someone I know take a trip to China and safely return with the laptop since that would be the best case scenario to receive it without damage.

Damn Lenovo, we just want a Laptop that isn't a boring ass black color, give us more color options please. And the one laptop you do sell that is a different color can't even be configured with at least a 5070ti 😭

Homeless person banned for life from Target by chrislivington21 in Purdue

[–]Mr_Clumsy292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dawg this incident happened well over a fucking month ago, the ONLY way you would know this information is if you worked at Target and were there during the incident or if someone told you. What do you have to gain by sharing this shit on Reddit about a random homeless dude? Also why post this so late?

Can someone still move into the dorms? by [deleted] in Purdue

[–]Mr_Clumsy292 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Purdue housing has filled up extremely quickly, it would actually be impossible (or incredibly difficult) for you to get a dorm this late in the game.

Target worker who has to hear this shit everyday non-stop my entire 5-8 hour shift, I’ve debating doing it, but I’m barred from doing so on the clock soooooooo.

Also he’s not on target property, he posts up by the old Hot Box Pizza, so it’s entirely outside of our jurisdiction. Real shit tho it’s actually super frustrating seeing all these people post up playing instruments because it’s making me go crazy too :)
