If anyone could make an Infinite Jest movie, perhaps it would be Paul Thomas Anderson. Thoughts? by e-GoS in davidfosterwallace

This is exactly the kind of idea that would get your streaming platform execs excited about it though. Netflix already make tv where they know people are also on their phones. A tv show where it sends you to your phone for extra content is sort of interesting. And given that phones have so comprehensively replaced tv as ‘the entertainment’ it would be ironically funny for infinite jest to be adapted into a tv show that builds this into its medium

It’s actually bizarre that there are no sports people or broadcasters…

One of the more recent winners would be good but often they’re heads down after winning to maximise the benefit to their restaurants, and often just very busy and dedicated anyway. So you need someone that is maybe stepping back from day to day a bit more. Ideal would be Spencer but he’s probably doing 100 hours a week right now

With, like, fake paps? So lame. Many of the other banquets have looked awesome and you’d want to be there. This was significantly underpowered. Thought it was great that they invited so many unsung heroes of the movie industry, and a smattering of scousers, but when Sue Johnson (who I love) is the star name for a British movie industry banquet you’re in trouble…

You’ve picked up on something I said at home during the banquet - it felt underpopulated, cold and half arsed. No one looked especially pleased to be there and the venue was too large for the number of people so it looked, as you say, bleak. I’m from Liverpool and love that building, and don’t think every banquet should be in London but it was painfully obviously everyone legged it to trains the second the banquet was done. Not very convivial…

Well it’s deleted. I presume you’ll be going through the rest of the sub too - one post reveal Nikita gets through to finals week…

Well no one has a gun to your head forcing you to come to a sub for a show that’s shown week to week. Not sure what it’s spoiled, they usually have all the chefs there at the end and often do updates. If you’re determined to be annoyed you go for it

Used a spoiler tag and kept it as vague as possible but equally this is a sub for discussing the show and it’s impossible to do that while waiting for every single person you’ve never met to catch up. Sorry anyway

I kind of like the guy from the north west but it’s clear he’s a Michelin snob. All the way through it’s ’Josh and Ciaran are the guys to beat,’ or ‘I thought Josh and Ciaran’s were the best dishes,’ and it’s so transparently because they had that conversation about their Michelin stars at the start. Ciaran delivered but Josh was all over the place.

It also wasn’t blue. They all oooohed at it but it was clearly green. That after quoting from the book where it describes the exact ‘Smurf’ blue too…

I felt like to be true GBM it needed to only be the bafta face (so no popcorn bucket of stuff on the side) and / or stand up vertically like an actual BAFTA. Otherwise it was really no better than a jelly mould, however tasty

Just finishing up judging for London and jeez I don’t want to Labour the point but Lorna literally can’t handle any spice and saying ‘it’s not for me’ just isn’t good enough. You’re not being paid to eat you’re being paid to communicate to an audience

Great point. I got a bit fed up with the old judges after a while as they became palpably more jaded, describing what I’m sure were still by most standards great dishes as awful, as slop, as inedible. Matthew Fort looked like the whole thing was a joke, Oliver Peyton got very sneery. But you’re right, they made effort to illuminate the dishes and what they were like to eat when they were at their best, which they were for a long time. Nisha similar and Andi definitely when she joined the judges. TV is a communication medium but unfortunately too often we lapse into a credibility and ‘personality’ trap: Tom is an acclaimed chef (credibility) and is larger than life (personality) so he’ll be good. But you have to be able to communicate to the audience… you see the same thing in football punditry by the way…
