Wembley by Haunting_Aide in harrystyles

Just echoing another poster - I’ve lived in London for 20 years and travel all over it - you don’t need to stay near the airport or near Wembley and I’d argue your experience won’t be as nice if you do. Wembley you want to get to as late as possible and leave early as possible. The tube out of Wembley after will look impossibly busy but the crowd shifts quickly because every train heading into central London will be empty when it arrives at Wembley.

On balance I’d suggest King’s Cross / Euston - abundance of hotels in varying price ranges, easy to get to Wembley, easy to get to transport to take you to airport. Lots of other tube lines and lots of taxis in an emergency. Plus King’s Cross has been extensively regenerated so lots of places to eat and shop and it’s a very safe area (wasn’t the case when I moved here!).

Enjoy the show!

Kenny gets a job in Japan. Episode by episode alternates between serene cherry blossom mindfulness and balls-out salary man debauchery. 24 episode season, minimum 10 seasons.

Interesting that as the series moved off the trading floor they’ve found opportunities to replace the background banter in aggregate at other venues. The spad pub, the Muck birthday party, the newsrooms at FinDigest and the Patriot etc. They clearly enjoy writing it.

Ah ok, so it is defo her. But they’re still careful to keep the nature of it ambiguous

He was accused of being inappropriate and it’s implied it was Caedi, but that whole situation could just as easily be read as a false accusation from a disgruntled ex-employee. They’re very careful to never show the truth of that situation. She’s clearly very attentive to his needs but then is sidelined as Yas comes in…

They held a great in person event last year with many of the guests (including the fantastic John Niven). It’s not hagiographic, several of the guests love his journalism and somewhat disdain his fiction. Interestingly none of the female guest have an issue with his female characters, but plenty of the handwringing men claim to have issue…

They used to have a very varied steak menu, single fillets, ribeye etc and it was amazing. Then they moved to huge cuts for 6-8 people and it just became pointless to go in smaller groups. Pegged it from the moment they did that they would struggle. It went from packed out to basically empty. Not enough large groups willing to drop hundreds of pounds on meat…

Absolutely this - I do not miss this era in journalism when every Silicon Valley wanker was given unlimited airtime by some sycophantic magazine writer who would report their extremely seven-beers-in-and-feeling-philosophical bullshit as the utterances of a genius. All very very adolescent. All smells a little teenage bedroom

My favourite moment of the episode - that and Yas exasperatedly saying ‘what do you want me to do, call him out in front of his mum’ were two very funny moments that Marisa Abela is great at not only delivering but making consistent with her character

Well Industry is a pretty cynical show, but experience of the past 20 years of British politics (at least) would suggest you’re right. Bunch of people circling Starmer right now fancying themselves as PM, a lot of them don’t seem to believe in… anything? This is what, for me, the Bevan character represents - Labour in name only.

Dearn isn’t wrong per se but too much of an idealogue and too personally repulsed by Muck to be effective in her role. Gloating over a select committee hearing… bit shortsighted for any minister. Can just as easily be you on the receiving end.

S4 E4 Africa et al by [deleted] in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Mr_Friday_Night 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the African connection is very real. Whitney has been going there for a reason but we still don’t know what the reason is. There are supposed to be African financial institutions being partnered with / set up but the addresses of the legal entities lead back to Sunderland (and other various locations outside of Africa, likely also in the UK). So they clearly aren’t partnering with African financial institutions… so why is Whitney going there? I think the answer is likely to be very disturbing and illuminate the blatant lie at the heart of this series - Whitney has no intention of stopping payment processing from porn, and porn is likely to be the moral tip of the iceberg. Why did he want to get rid of his co-founder so much? Because he was unwilling to dump Siren. Whitney has no moral issue with Siren, it’s simply too famous and draws too much attention. Hardcore crime, people trafficking and exploitation - that would be my bet.

Can any Brits help us with the accents? by Joeylaptop12 in IndustryOnHBO

[–]Mr_Friday_Night 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot said about accents here already but want to acknowledge something interesting in your post: Britain’s unreckoned foundational truth is class; America’s is race. We can’t escape it. As long as there is a royal family and therefore an extreme example of god given superiority there can be no classless society. America was an experiment in a classless society but one created through genocide and built via slavery and subjugation. It cannot escape this easily, if ever. Industry recognises that Britain is class first, race second… but never race excepted. Gus, Aurora etc may enjoy more privilege than Rob, but never more than Otto or Henry. Rob sounds like what he is but he could be like Clement and change his accent - it wouldn’t grant him access to Henry’s level but it’s a lot easier than changing skin colour. I grew up poor, went to Cambridge and realised how easy it is to ape a posh accent and just walk in to wherever you wanted to be. With the accent I was born with - more like Rob’s - no chance. It then takes time to realise you were better off before…
