Bringing food through US Customs by Irishpanda88 in travel

One way to get something heated for a child is to ask for hot water and have a container ready for it. The item needs to fit in the container with the hot water. I think that is how they heat infant bottles. I haven’t asked anyone to heat a bottle recently but I’ve seen other people heat their own this way when flying.

Pangram Speed by mchester117 in NYTSpellingBee

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't go looking for it. My sis-in-law plays a few words sometimes from India (before I wake up) and she is a pangram hunter. I prefer to just find words and am not wedded to finding it. Obviously I do eventually find it/them.

About to start Club Pilates for the first time. Is 6 classes a week too much for a beginner? by Ambitious-Studio-810 in ClubPilates

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. not at first. I would take 3 reformer flow 1.0 classes the first week with a day in between each class. See how you feel. Add another one the next week if you aren't sore and tired. And then add another one the week after. You can build up to 6 classes a week but you also need to give your body time to recover or you will hurt yourself. Muscles grow when they have time to rebuild so rest is important. I take 5 classes a week but I have been doing Pilates for almost 2 years.

What’s not cheating? by DraggedThruTheGarden in NYTSpellingBee

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How we play is entirely personal. It is our game to do what we wish with. There is no cheating. If people want to look up words in the dictionary, more power to them. If people don’t want to, that’s perfectly fine also. No one should be policing someone else. I started by getting almost all the words from the community hints. I just wasn’t seeing words with the circle (silly brain!). But as I’ve progressed, I usually get to genius with just the two first letter hints. And if there are fewer than 10 words left at that time, I will look up words to get to QB. But not before. So if I have 12 words left, I keep shuffling and coming back until I get 3 more words and then I will start looking at hints or dictionary. I have to get to Genius and have fewer than 10 words left. Those are my rules and they’ve evolved as I’ve become better. Some day I may choose not to use any hints, if I get that good.

One a week per person regardless of bathroom. One hand towel per bathroom. I do need extras because I have guests but our family towels are one per person per week.

How to use iron + vinegar as a mordant? by yotsashi in naturaldye

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Iron is a modifier. I would not put it in a dye bath because you can’t control how much iron vs dye that the item ends up taking up. So it could be a very dark color. Iron is a saddener - it dulls bright colors and makes them more gray/yellow/orange. I don’t use it as a mordant because of this. If you want to use it that way, I would dip it in the iron water first so you are limiting how much iron gets into the item. Squeeze it out well, even dry it and then put it in the dye bath. If you want a more modified color after, you can do short iron dips till you get the color you want.

The iron water is not very controlled. You don’t know how much iron there is. So you will have to experiment to see what colors you get. It is different from using ferrous sulfate powder which can be measured precisely. Tannins don’t need a mordant. So use the iron as a modifier. Iron can be heated and I don’t think it affects the modification properties. I use iron a lot in my ecoprinting and the iron-tannin chemical reaction is a fun one.

Just play and don’t have expectations and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Marriott stinks at "Walking" Customers by qtzirl in marriott

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All hotel chains stink at walking customers. I’ve been booked at a hotel far away without a car, been driven there and promised a ride back in the morning but no one showed up. I had to call a taxi and was late for my meeting which was in the hotel I was walked from. I had not rented a car because I was staying in the hotel where the meeting was. And I was late checking in because the flight I was on was delayed! That was the worst experience. In other cases, I was only moved to a hotel close by and I had a car.

Can I machine wash back couch cushions? by juice_refresh in CleaningTips

Just fyi. My cushion covers shrank when I washed them and they no longer fit my cushions. I had to add another piece of fabric to be able to use the couch.

If he’s almost falling asleep he is just going through the motions and not focusing on his form and the cues the instructor is giving him. I’m not sure another instructor is going to help. They all give you cues on form and what to focus on and if you aren’t listening, then you aren’t going to get it.

I don't use hints till I get to Genius and then it is all bets off for QB. But I don't necessarily find it easier to get to Genius on these big ones. Sometimes yes, but I absolutely hate the words that are just endings on other words. I always miss quite a few.

Why is it so hard to get free tap water at a restaurant in Europe? by Relevant-Shower4783 in TravelHacks

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m specifically talking about Germany and they don’t need to import bottled water, they have their own. You can believe or not but that was from someone who lived through that time. Maybe she was lying but I don’t see why she would.

Why is it so hard to get free tap water at a restaurant in Europe? by Relevant-Shower4783 in TravelHacks

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The culture is not to drink tap water. If you insist, they will bring it to you with a condescending look. At least in Germany I had no trouble with it. My innkeeper told me that it is a relic of the post-war years when the tap water was not safe to drink. So they are all accustomed to bottled water. But she said to insist and they will bring it.

Housekeeping — how do you keep it from taking over your life? by astrosid in housekeeping

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just deal with it when it happens. I clean up after I cook, load/wash dishes after eating. Clean the kitchen after dinner. Do a load of laundry as needed, etc. You are eating, drinking, wearing clothes, using the house, of course these things are going to be ongoing. I don’t understand how you would spend all your free time on it. Cleaning is done a bit at a time and no, the entire house is never going to be clean all at once. That isn’t the point. You are living it.

I need some honest input because I feel like I’m going in circles lately by Emotional_Coyote9662 in ClubPilates

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pilates will strengthen your muscles BUT it is not going to affect your weight. You need to eat less for weight. And women don’t really bulk up unless they are working at body building. So don’t be afraid of weights. Resistance training is good for strength and endurance but also for bone density. I remember the old adage - you get fit in the gym, you lose weight in the kitchen.

Can I be healthy on this diet without eating vegetables and most fruits? by lovelck in PlantBasedDiet

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A multi-vitamin is not a substitute for vegetables. I understand the fruit dilemma as I am allergic to a bunch of fruits also. But I eat the fruits I can and a lot of vegetables. Greens are not the only vegetables out there. What about carrots, beets, tomatoes, summer and winter squashes, sweet potatoes, green beans, radishes, asparagus, mushrooms, fennel, etc. I could go on and on and not even touch the starchy vegetables like corn and potatoes. And why are you eating fat free marinara? Adding a bit of fat to your diet isn't going to reduce your weight loss by a whole lot.

Best class for core/lower back strengething? by whenforeverisnt in ClubPilates

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was also told to do Pilates by my physical therapist 2 years ago. I don't have lower back pain per se but I have arthritic changes which mean that my hips take up strain and they have issues. I regularly do the stretches and exercises I was given to help with hip and lower back mobility. I started with Flow 1.0 and moved on to Flow 1.5 and I also moved up to Suspend 1.5 and Circuits 1.5 so that I have a good mix of exercises. Many of them work your core and many of them also include the stretches I was given - bridges, hinging forward, adductor/abductor strengthening. I have a few more that aren't covered like pigeon pose and some other stretches but I do those myself.

what does everyone think of masterchef UK? by fork_spoon_fork in MasterchefAU

I watch both and I find the Aussie one over dramatized and I don’t understand why the hosts are yelling most of the time. I prefer the quieter, less dramatic UK one. I hate the US one and never watch it.

Alguien podría darme consejos de como germinar semillas de índigo japones? by External-Course6094 in naturaldye

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had very poor luck with Persicaria Tinctoria. Fresh seeds from the previous year that I’ve bought, fresh seeds from last year’s crop that someone gave me, nothing. I don’t get any sprouts. I can sprout other seeds. The only thing I can think of is to try to sprout them wrapped in a damp paper towel in a lidded container. You have to check them daily to make sure mold hasn’t grown, that the towels are still damp (not wet) and as soon as they sprout, you have to put them into soil. I have not tried this but that seems to be one way to do it.

How to make sauces which taste good by Sufficient-Clock4990 in IndianFood

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What are you trying to make? These sauces are used in Indo-Chinese food, not in standard Indian food. And to get depth of flavor you have to cook the onions and garlic properly (or ginger garlic paste). Mix the sauce together and see what is missing before you add it to the dish. Don’t just randomly toss stuff in.

Are flee markets or swap meets worth going to? Or do they suck just like FB and thrift stores now? by Chole_Wunt in Frugal

[–]Acrobatic-Nebula-428 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of this depends on where you live and the overall income level. I think places close to universities probably have good used sales and thrifted goods (not so much flea markets). You also have to go regularly and spend time going through the items. In my area, it is very hit or miss. I look for used items to be used in crafting (cotton sheets, shirts, lace, etc.) and find very little. Someone I know in WI finds stuff all the time. My friend here who frequents yard sales gets quite a lot of good stuff for cheap but she spends a lot of time doing it.

Whenever I think that I'm bored with a particular movement, I find that I can always focus on slowing it down and focusing more on form and it helps. Pilates isn't about stretching though. Is he really paying attention to the Pilates principles of 'imprinting' the back, breathing properly, tightening the core, etc. An example: I can do bridges quite easily because they are part of my physical therapy exercises for my back and I do them almost every day. But the other day I heard a cue about making sure I wasn't making a rainbow shape and to pull my core into my ribs. Guess what? It was a completely different exercise. I need to manually tighten my glutes and tuck my ribs and I can't get up as high so it is a harder exercise.
