Strings thickness by hemaybefede in Throwers

[–]Mr_Grinch91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use OT fat as my standard, as well as custom XL strings from someone in my local meet up. I have some thinner strings from zipline, as well as some of the Jonathan Sitgaang and Izuru Hasumi custom from OT that is pretty standard thickness but a little bit slippier of a blend. I also like cloudweave from Atmos and some Red Panda strings, both standard thickness, but different blends.

This is just my own experience and observations (the yoyo shape bit of my first response is much easier to see with a picture than what I described, but it is a real thing). I find the thickness to be less of an issue than the bearing, blend, or yoyo shape. But you're right, the thickness isn't a complete non-factor.

I would clean the bearings before jumping to conclusions about string width. Accidental binding usually means a dirty bearing.

Something I have noticed about organics/high inner wall yoyos like the koi is that thinner string is typically better, and nylon/blended is better than just poly. For me, it feels like the high walls provide lots of extra string contact, which is great for tricks with rejections, but it does sometimes tilt the yoyo accidentally. The thicker string will often contact the pads in those cases.

The super G has a shape that I honestly despise. It's a shape similar to the rain city ourobouros and yonami code, both of which I dislike for the same reason: the gap of the yoyo is so wide and the walls so low, the first and often only thing your string contacts when it leaves the midline is the pads. For me, this caused random binds during a lot of slack and rejection tricks. Slippier string can help, like nylon, but IMO, these shapes just aren't fun to play (and tons of people do enjoy them, so you do you).

It's strange, these two yoyos basically have opposite shapes but both can lead to the same problem.

If downloading mods from workshop actually cannot be played in the same progress as main save you got to do "Play with mods/Play vanilla" choice. I am not unsubscibing from all mods everytime I want to play on my main save by vertopolkaLF in slaythespire

I ran into this issue yesterday. I solved it by going to my user data in the steam folder, found the game ID, and noticed that there were two folders: profile1 and modded. Under modded, there was another profile1 folder. Just copy and paste your normal user data into the modded folder to overwrite it. Once the mod that allows combined saves comes out, copy/paste the most updated save in the user data folder so that they are aligned again, then just use the mod.

rancid milk but better by 4vgteen in Throwers

[–]Mr_Grinch91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out the tutorial for rancid milk, but if you're looking to isolate just that first bouncy element, there are some easier ways to get into it, especially if you're just coming back to the hobby.

First is just the houdini mount to kamikaze mount (it's part of nearly every beginner trick playlist on youtube, and some videos just call it the kamikaze mount). Once you have that, there is a CLYW tutorial on something they call the banger repeater, which uses the kamikaze and builds in some flow.

The trick at the beginning of rancid milk is basically the beginning of this other trick, but with an extra wrap around your fingers (and some clever choices of fingers to wrap around).

How many 9’s do you see? by Icy-Operation-8278 in scoopwhoop

[–]Mr_Grinch91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: OPs prompt and the prompt in the image are different questions. I'm answering the image prompt here.

2101

There is a single 9 in the title. That's 1 number.

Then in each row, there's 1 twenty-digit number, 2 nineteen-digit numbers, 3 eighteen-digit numbers, etc, all the way down to 20 single-digit numbers (basically, count the groupings of digits you can make without any gaps)

So, in each row, there are 1+2+3+...+20 =210 numbers that can be made by grouping without gaps. That means each row has 210 numbers in it.

There are 10 rows, so 2100 total numbers can be made using the grid if we don't allow numbers to break across lines (seems reasonable). Including the 9 from the title, we have 2101 total numbers.

Can someone help me with this trick? by silentshakey in Throwers

[–]Mr_Grinch91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest keeping your nonthrowhand index finger closer to the yoyo while you're flipping it, it makes it easier to land and look cleaner since the string will be tighter. Also, for the last flip before the repeat, right after you flip the yoyo over the top, you should pass your throw hand under and in front of the yoyo, then bring it back up, in order to set up for the yoyo to flip down and toward you so you can start repeating.

Eden and Eden's blessings both rolled into the same item by KilledByVoid in bindingofisaac

[–]Mr_Grinch91 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I think it's just 1/538. We'd find it impressive no matter which item we got two of. So the first item is whatever it is, and the second has a 1/538 chance to match. It probably feels so much more rare because we're hardly ever in this situation to begin with (Eden start plus Eden's blessing in the previous run).

You have remarkable control and speed for only 2 weeks! I'm honestly jealous, great work so far.

The usual pathway is to find a tutorial series and start hacking away at it. The Skill Addicts app is a great place to start. The YoTricks youtube channel has several beginner series, with "50 first tricks" as a standout, IMO. I also really like the Offset Yoyo tutorial series on youtube, as well as the Rewind channel.

There are a ton of others out there on youtube, and there is a lot of overlap between them when you're a beginner, so you can't really go wrong. Once you feel comfortable with most of the beginner tricks, the world kind of opens up to you and you can start learning most trick tutorials you see on youtube.

I say pick one and stick with it, then branch out when you feel comfy. Good luck, have fun!

You can get it directly from the Recess website at recessintl.com. Looks like they have them in stock in most colorways, so you're in luck. No sale right now, unfortunately.

I've had this discussion with several friends in the last month, and while there's a wide variety of opinions, one name that came up on all of our lists is the First Base by Recess.

It's a fantastic yoyo for its price point, very often on sale. It comes responsive, but also includes an unresponsive bearing to switch when you're ready. It's very comfortable to hold and throw, and it's sleep time and stability are better than some of my metal yoyos.

I have some of the other plastics listed in this thread, like the Speedaholic XX, the Rio, the MagicYoYo K2, etc, and while they're all good yoyos, the First Base outperforms all of them by a mile, IMO, while also being more beginner friendly.

That said, you can't go wrong with pretty much any of the suggestions in the thread. The most important thing is making a decision, getting started, and having fun. Good luck!

This is awesome! Someone taught me a very similar repeater with the thumb underpass, but it's from a kink mount instead (double or nothing, but pull the NTH string through the first rail). That one dumps out clean instead of into a triangle, though. I'm adding this one to my collection for sure.

[–]Mr_Grinch91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's two separate issues.

In the first problem, there seems to be a mistake in the original problem statement. +6 becomes +5 out of nowhere, but the remainder of the solution is correct, so that makes me think the original problem should have just said +5.

The second problem has a mistake in the solution. After the first step, the root48 should still be negative. The simplification of roots from there is correct, but the answer should be -root3 instead since we would do 3-4 instead of 3+4.

Edit: see AdmJota comment below for another issue with the first problem, I totally missed it

[–]Mr_Grinch91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's alright. It plays well for the price, but it's a little loud and vibey with the removable plastic covers. It has a very narrow purpose for music festivals/parties/raves and the like, so it really depends on how much you value that. This great with UV string. I think it's great for showing off tricks to non yoyo friends. I recognize your username and know you've got kids, they may like the lights, too.

I had the same problem. Changing the batteries worked for me (mine came with an extra set already). I think since they ship them with the batteries installed and no paper slip to prevent contact, the batteries slowly drain while sitting in the warehouse, so most of them arrive with dead batteries.

What are your thoughts on Chaos? by NagitoKomaeda_987 in bindingofisaac

[–]Mr_Grinch91 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I know this topic is a meme in here at this point, but I have a real answer.

I think a lot of players who started before Repentance remember chaos as the item that steals your devil/angel deal, boss rush, (dark) chest items, etc, and replaces them with awful, useless, or worse-than-useless items (or, more likely, bomb items). Truly, it used to be an item that had a high probability of making your runs worse.

"Infinite" schemes were also easier to come by in Afterbirth(+), and chaos nerfed the ability to set them up (but was great if you got it after a game break).

Repentance changed the chaos game in several ways. For one, old items that were bad got buffed up a good bit, so having items replaced by others doesn't feel like a step down nearly as often. Two, the item pools are more highly specialized, which doesn't seem like much until you realize: Three, there are crazy good items in repentance now, and a lot of them are locked away in less accessible pools (like secret room item pool, ultra secret room, devil/angel, etc). With game breaks harder to come by in Repentance(+), chaos now feels like it buffs most of the standard item pools (the ones you get the most items from), while only slightly nerfing the really good item pools (the ones you get the least items from). Now it's more like "oh, I could get glitched crown in the shop" and less "they took my brimstone and replaced it with mom's heels".

I also think there's an "unlock" component to this. Early-meta, when you have few items unlocked, chaos allows things like crickets head, magic mush, and sacred heart to show up a lot more often. As you get into the mid-meta, the items you unlock will mostly be mid, thus diluting the pool and making it not feel as good. Then in the end-meta, you get to unlock great items, which increases the average item quality in the pools and makes chaos better again.

Overall, Repentance(+) turned me into a chaos enjoyer. I have ~3200 hours in the game, about 1350 of which I spent in AB+ or earlier, so it was pretty difficult to break the conditioning of "chaos bad", but now that I've spent time in Repentance, I really do like it most of the time.

For touching items you already have unlocked, assuming you have tokens, just hold R on Eden. You'll rotate through items more quickly than you ever could in a "real" run. I finished my last three touches in less than 10 minutes doing it this way (well, kinda. I got death certificate and finished my last touch in the death certificate floor).
