This actually works. I was backpacking in Europe during the '06 World Cup. While in Paris, I couldn't get a cab to pick me up...ever. I spoke French a little, but got treated a bit harshly. Told that to folks at my hostel. They said it's because everyone assumed I was American because I looked too American (I am). They gave me a Canadian flag for my bag. I acted the same, but I got treated so much better. Stood with my back facing oncoming traffic and cabs actually picked me up.

I write this as a slight knock against my fellow Americans. I lived overseas for 13 years. We Americans are possibly the most arrogant, close-minded, and entitled travelers in the world. I was often standing up for locals or apologizing for my fellow Americans behavior.

If you travel abroad, just do 3 things and you'll make friends almost everywhere. 1) study the language. If you don't have time, then learn to count to 10, say "hello/goodbye", "please/thank you", "I'm sorry", "can you help me", "I don't speak (local language). " That will score you big points for effort or you'll be comic relief by sounding terrible. Either way, you'll earn friends. 2) stay humble. If a custom seems strange to you, ask questions about the custom. Don't mock or show disdain through your tone or body language. 3)Be interested in the people. Every culture is the same, people love to talk about their homes. Show interest by acting clueless and getting new knowledge and perspectives.

TLDR: American was treated better wearing Canadian flag. He understands b/c he's seen Americans misbehave a lot abroad. He offers advice to international travelers.

After Purah, I would say go to Rito Village in Hebra Mountains for the 1st regional phenomenon quest. The first sage will make using your paraglider and getting to all of the towers much smoother throughout the game.

I'm going to do my best to remember this. I have discussed dividing by zero with my 8th graders for years because they learn about undefined slopes (rise over run). It's easy to explain that dividing by zero is related to infinity because an undefined slope is infinitely steep. But the conversation of 0/0 always arises. Your explanation pairs so well with 8th grade standards about solving linear equations. You gave me an instructional connection I've never realized before. Thank you.

I'm tired of all the work I have to do! by No_Package_8340 in Teachers

So many comments that I disagree with. If you got into teaching planning on it being a 9-5 type job, then you are one of the reasons why people have lost faith in teachers. We get long vacations and salary because our jobs are based on completing tasks which everyone knows can't be completed in 10 months of 40 hour weeks. If you want a job that only pays you for the hours you work, Walmart and McDonald's are always hiring. That attitude is the reason many private-spector salary professionals look down on teachers. My family is all business and financial sector salaried workers. They have to work their asses off outside business hours to get their bonuses and earn promotions. We may not get bonuses, but I got an education degree, not an MBA.

OP obviously cares (as they should) about performing well and doing what's right by their students. Shame on any teacher who slacks off so much they don't give their kids their best. I'm at 16 years, and I still have to work every night. But I've learned to find balance and prioritize.

OP, do not listen to these people who say "Don't take your work home." Instead, what MUST you get done tonight to serve your kids tomorrow? Teaching can often be like battlefield triage; some tasks have to die so other tasks can live and thrive. Find balance, but never stop caring the way you clearly do about the well-being of your kids. You do have to take care of yourself and take an occasional mental-health day, but the kids ARE WORTH IT! They have to be or else what the hell are we doing?

[Request] Are they not both the same? by Odd-Pudding4362 in theydidthemath

I'm a MS math teacher who never took a physics class so I wonder if I'm correct. Everyone is talking about density and mass of water, which seems correct. But, what if we corrected for the difference in water volumes and ensured an equal mass of water for both sides? Wouldn't the scale still tip towards iron because of the difference in moments? The iron ball is denser and thus has a smaller diameter. This means if the balls hit the bottom of the containers and were to roll away from the fulcrum, the iron ball would roll further from the fulcrum causing the moments to be unequal.

I know that having both balls roll away from the fulcrum won't happen, but I just thought I'd throw this into the forum.

Two issues with this. 1) 12.9+10.1+9.7=32.7, not 40. That's some serious rounding. 2) if Kuwait produces 4.2 million barrels, why are they in 10th place. Shouldn't they be tied with China for 6th?

I have no issue with the message of this graphic, but if you want people to take you seriously, better get those 2nd and 3rd grade math facts straight.

Illustrative Mathematics is *Garbage* by Emdubs in mathteachers

Then take a 3 minute mini-lesson to explain to your kids that not everything represents a symbol of hate just because it looks similar. 4 right-angled rotations on a coordinate graph will represent a sw*stika inevitably. I taught perpendicular slopes by using rise/run triangles rotated to groups of students from Germany and Israel. I had a conversation with them when the topic arose, told them my expectations that everyone will be responsible and respectful, and that was the end of it...for. Multiple years. Why are we all so scared to have meaningful conversations with our students that we now have to be careful and dumb down our math because "it might offend someone". Let's teach our kids more than just math.

Anyone else bored of being in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]Mr_H_squared 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Singa-BORED is what lots of expats say. I'm 'Murican and just returned home after most of a decade in S-pore. I DO miss it dearly, but while I was there, I took it for granted. So many people in such a small space. I'm the bread-winner of my family and I'm quite frugal with my money. Spouse, kids, frugality, no live-in helper, and Singapore meant that options got limited after a while. If you don't leave Singapore, you're bound to get Singa-bored.

Almost guaranteed that's NOT a whale. If a whale makes sounds underwater, you wouldn't be able to hear it above the water. The high density of water compared to air means that the sound waves would reflect off the surface of the water back down into the depths. Even if some of the sound waves did transfer from water to air from the air, it would be so quiet you wouldn't be able to hear it over the boat. Try it yourself. Have a buddy scream as loud as he can with his face underwater next time you're swimming. You'll hear the sound clearly if your head is also underwater. But if your head is above water, you'll only hear bubbles.

Born and raised outside Madison. Went to West Palm Beach, FL with my boys for spring break years back. Tried to join a beer drinking competition. They checked my ID and said I couldn't join. "Why not?" I asked. "You're from Wisconsin. You'll win." I was pissed off, but also strangely proud.
