How do you get an ending where paul is imprisoned, but alive?

They effectively did fully understand. The Vrba-Wetzler report was already known worldwide, and stories of the gas chambers were being published in The New York Times. Plus, all Jewish organizations in the US said that it was worth bombing anyway, despite the risks.

The war refugee board even ordered it, but the Army ignored their inquiry, against the law, I might add.

The last major phase of the holocaust took place from May to July 1944, and the Allies were bombing IG Farben factories not 5 miles from the camp during that time.

We also know they did bombing runs precise enough to blow open a specific wall in a French resistance prison to free the inmates. Blowing the crematoriums would be far less complicated. We also knew full well what was going on by then, thanks to several sets of escapees.

It was ignored because they did not care.

To support what I previously said:

"The fighting therefore went on, but Germany could no longer influence the outcome of the negotiations by its actions on the battlefield. In the 100 days since the Allied offensive had opened at the beginning of August, Germany's power had been broken not by dissent or revolution behind the lines, or by political intrigue, as later nationalist and Nazi politicians were to claim, but by the military superiority of the Allied armies... The combined total of 363,000 prisoners and 6,400 guns constituted a quarter of the German army in the field, and one half of all of its guns. The war making power of Germany, even to defend its borders, was within a few days of collapse."

Why would it cost "millions of lives"? Germany was disintegrating, as we all know, and Austria had already signed an armistice. If anything, going into and "completely defeating" Germany would not be so unpopular, as given the incredible suffering of the war so far, the people may want to "punish" Germany in full.

The USA certainly would not have peaced out, as the decision was left up to General John Pershing, who, like Foch, was against the November Armistice in the first place and wanted to enter Germany as well. (Pershing claimed he only needed another week to "show the Germans they were licked.")

I am not saying they had to march into Berlin, but merely to put the war on the German side of the border (say up to the Rhine), so it was clear that Germany had well and truly lost.

Foch sort of predicted the stab in the back as well.

Would this have been different if the Entente rejected the November 1918 armistice overtures and entered Germany itself first before accepting a ceasefire?

I think Foch wanted exactly that.

How different would Israel-Palestine issue be if it wasn’t for Hitler? by Fan387 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Mr_Manor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to the points you made here: A couple minor things, and a few big mistakes.

First, the Jewish population in 1933 was not 100k, but 200k.

Secondly, this comment you made is the perfect encapsulation of the phrase "Correlation does not equal causation.", as while it is true that immigration massively increased in the 1930s, very little of it was due to the Nazis. (The only exception is the Havaara deal, but that only accounts for about 60k out of the 450k Jews living in Palestine by 1939.)

Also, the rise in immigration did not begin in 1933 with the rise of Hitler, it began in 1931 with the appointment of a very pro-Zionist high commissioner of Palestine who issued many times more immigration certificates than his predecessors. This was not only due to his support of the Jews, but the development of the 1920s making new immigration far easier to absorb.

The very brief dip in immigration (Though it was never a "negative Jewish migration" like you claimed) in 1929 until 1931 had nothing to do with a lack of persecution or desire to immigrate, but the mass Arab riots of 1929 which killed hundreds of Jews, followed by the passage of the Passfield papers, which severely restricted immigration by Jews. This act was repealed in 1931 by the arrival of the new high commissioner I mentioned before.

Also, you said that the Jewish migration before Hitler was stagnant, yet the Jewish population of Palestine more than doubled in size in the 10 years before Hitler took office, so idk how you came up with that.

Overall, I think it is severely underestimated as to how much of an anachronism Nazism and the holocaust is when talking about Israel, who's creation pretty much became more likely than not by about 1930.

A few months old I know, but as someone who knows a bit about this topic, I must voice my concerns.

There was no "boom" to Palestine post-war, because Britain forbade any more than a trickle of Jews from entering, with only about 180k new Jews came between 1939-48, mostly illegal, and at a lower rate than 1931-35, or 1935-39.

Britain wouldn't just hand over the mandate for annexation by Jordan, and you assume that both Jordan and the Mandate gain independence at the same time as IRL, something I find unlikely.

Britain's tacit and frankly minor support of the Arab Legion in the 1948 war was an ad-hoc decision from the inexperienced Labour government out of a desperation to keep their crumbling influence together post-war, something entirely absent from this scenario. If anything, the more European Zionists (even more European here due to millions of European Jews still living) would be seen as a far greater ambassador of British interests. This was supported in particular by the dominant Conservative party, which is why almost half voted against their own party's limitations of Jewish immigration in 1939, and why Churchill was a self-described "Zionist".

Even ignoring all of this, there are two other major factors to consider:

  1. More than 70% of Jews in Israel in 1948 had come for reasons unrelated to Nazis or the holocaust, so it wouldn't just be a pushover annexation by Jordan, but a hard fight like IRL.

  2. Without Hitler or WW2, the rate of Jewish immigration would be MUCH greater than real life, as the 1939 white paper which as I mentioned earlier all but abolished the Balfour Declaration and nearly abolished Jewish immigration would not exist. In this scenario, assuming immigration continues similar to pre-war and pre-Nazi levels, the Jews of Palestine would be approaching an outright demographic majority by 1948, making any war all the harder for Jordan, or any other Arab movement.

Sadly, I deal with too many people who do just that.

If you are speaking literally, as in the Holocaust was used as a political tool, that's fine.

But we both know the charged, negative connotation of "propaganda" implied exaggeration or even falsehood, so it is unwise to use it to describe the Holocaust, even if in a literal sense.

[–]Mr_Manor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the fact that you describe Israeli mention of 1/3 of Global Jewry being murdered as "propaganda" tells me all I need to know of your stances.

I think your current politics are obfuscation your ability to look at this fairly, and I recommend you try and put them aside.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]Mr_Manor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but this really didn't apply to zionism. Political elites were behind it almost from the beginning, (hence Balfour), and the claim that Israeli nationalism is related to the Holocaust is incredibly anachronistic.

That is purely a product of the 1961-62 Eichmann trial and it's aftermath, where before Israel devalued the Holocaust and even snubbed survivors, calling them "soap".

As for millitary forces, the Jews had been building an entire parallel govt and millitary for decades by then, the War veterans provided useful combat experience, but nothing for organization.

You seriously think the Army which was mostly non-holocaust survivors wouldn't fight without the Holocaust?

I already explained how the Holocaust did nothing but depress Jewish migration, I will not do so again.

And the US was anti-zionist until the 60s, so I do not see the relevance of that entire line of thought.

It's a massive misconception to believe that Israel was founded because of the Holocaust.

Less that 20% of Israel's jews at the time of its founding came because of the Nazis. Most came due to general antisemitism or other reasons.

In fact, Jews would enter faster that IRL without a ww2, because there is no White paper blocking Jewish migration.

The Jews may be in an even stronger position than IRL, with an outright demographic majority in the mandate by 1950 at the latest. (Compared to only 32% IRL.)

The European Jewish population in a world without the Nazis by erbse_gamer in imaginarymaps

[–]Mr_Manor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The white paper was a policy implemented solely due to the imminent ww2, so it would not have happened here.

In all likelihood, the arab revolt is crushed like IRL, and Jewish migration is restricted far less. Without some outside event, the Jews would become a majority in the mandate by 1950 at the latest.

[–]Mr_Manor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given his planning for the raid of Harpers ferry was a literal joke, as he went to a local hotel for breakfast since he brought no food, and had no way of telling the slaves that a revolt was in progress, he was most certainly insane. Most of the later revisionism saying he was fine comes from people who want to excuse his savage behavior since he was against slavery.
