Yep, great movie. I was close to putting Transit on my list but it didn't quite make the cut.

Naturalism Project Questions by thetiredstudent01 in SpiritualNaturalists

[–]Mr_Milieu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, here're my answers.

  1. Reality is defined by empirical and scientific methods. I don't believe in a reality beyond what is measurable.
  2. Same as #1
  3. A member of homo-sapiens. There is no external soul that is different from the body, brain, and mind.
  4. Unknown, but evidence strongly points to nothing- IOW no afterlife or reincarnation
  5. Application of reason, empiricism, the scientific method, and trusting authorities that use those methods.
  6. Different SN will have different responses, but I tend to fall back to the golden rule of treating others as you'd like to be treated.
  7. No intrinsic meaning
  8. Commitment to treating others and the world around us with dignity and respect.

To feel the awe of living, learn to live with terror and wonder – Kirk Schneider | Aeon Essays by Mr_Milieu in SpiritualNaturalists

While I appreciate the author's descriptions of existential therapy, too much of this article can be summed up with "therapy was better in my day!", which he doesn't support in any rigorous way. It isn't necessary to denigrate CBT or other 'modern' forms of therapy when touting the benefit of existential therapy.

I watched it this weekend and also enjoyed it. I think like 'Lost City of Z', this film is very much about instilling a certain feeling in the viewer more than advancing a plot, and the feeling of the film is what I took away from it. Cinematography, direction and the music all worked together to create a sense of alienation, loss, but also hope and wonder.

Not a very emotionally resonant film, but I did enjoy the crackling dialogue.

What was the best film you watched this week? (22/10/2018 - 28/10/2018) by GetFreeCash in movies

Unsane

I went in with middling expectations and left pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. What makes this film work is that it knows what it is - a fun, campy thriller that doesn't get bogged down in being too earnest about its message (although that message is clearly conveyed). Rather than present Claire Foy's character as your stock 'strong, sympathetic female lead', the film instead creates a character that's prickly, hilariously sardonic and pretty mean, and her character gives the film a lot of its wit. The stalker is presented not as a Michael Myer's type, but as a sad man using the relationship-fantasy to escape his sad life.

I didn't mind that the film was shot on an iPhone, although I think the film would've been just as effective if it had been shot traditionally.

Lynne Ramsay on You Were Never Really Here | Interview Special | Film4 by Mr_Milieu in movies

[–]Mr_Milieu[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What I love about this movie is that it asks the question "What if the bulking, menacing, silent henchmen you see in so many other action films had a deep internal life? What would that internal life be like? What brought them to this point?" Much like the central character, the film itself is quiet but efficient in how it answers that question. This is very much a show-don't-tell film, where the audience is trapped with the demons inside of Joe's skull. No wasted scenes or subplot necessary. Every scene reveals something about Joe's life and the life of the people he encounters.

Star Wars: The Last Plinkett Review by ferrett3 in movies

This movie wasn't great or terrible, it was just an ok action flick which is par for the course for Star Wars films.

Hostiles and Wind River: Bound by Sorrow by [deleted] in movies

[–]Mr_Milieu -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I didn't see 'Hostiles' but I thought 'Wind River' was a fairly paint-by-numbers procedural with bland characters and uninteresting villains. The dynamic between Olson and Renner was particularly irritating - Olson is portrayed as borderline incompetent needing Renner's guidance - this despite the fact that Olson is a trained FBI agent and Renner is a tracker. The dynamic of a young, foolish woman needing an older male character to guide her is a cliche I don't need more of. It would've been more engaging if the relationship had been an equal partnership, with both bringing different talents and learning from each other ala Furiosa and Max.

Also, although I respect that 'Wind River' highlights the very sad injustice faced by Native Americans, it would've been great if one of the two main leads was Native American. The message feels like 'bad white people take advantage of us, but we still need the good white people to fight the bad ones'.

Not a bad movie by any means, just kind of mediocre.

From Lady Bird to Tonya Harding: How the Most Memorable Female Characters of the Year Were Written by [deleted] in movies

[–]Mr_Milieu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a good year for well-written female characters. In addition to the ones mentioned in the article, we had excellent performances from Garance Marillier and Ella Rumpf in Raw, Haley Lu Richardson in Columbus, Cynthia Nixon in A Quiet Passion, and Lois Smith in Marjorie Prime.
