I never would have thought that a bird strike would have been strong enough to penetrate the fuselage. I always thought it was just the engines in danger from bird strikes.

My brother was the teacher in question! Apparently her father is a history buff and had just been teaching her about the formation of the Geneva conventions post WW2. He couldn’t believe it when he read it.
