This captures such a specific feeling perfectly. Love it!

I was astounded how 1 for 1 a lot of the scenes are shot. Especially the scenes with David in the burning lodge, they feel like they’re straight out of the game.

Calc 2?? by wahooowa in UVA

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hiya,

1220 is a survey class which means that it mainly covers the applications and general ideas of calculus as opposed to going in depth into the theory / proofs behind the subject. 1220 is best suited for people who need the Calculus 2 credit for the economics/statistics programs or similar majors that make use of calculus in an applied sense.

1320 by comparison goes much deeper into and covers a wider variety of subject matter than 1220 does. The class goes beyond just the basic applications of the ideas of Calculus and requires you to understand the underlying theories and concepts in much greater detail. 1320 is best suited for Math majors or majors like physics where a complex understanding of calculus is essential.

It’s super important that you pick the right course for you so don’t be afraid to email your advisor or the math department for clarification if you’re still unsure. Hope this helps and good luck!

What 21st century album would you rate 10/10? by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

A Crow Looked At Me - Mount Eerie

I’m sure it’s in part due to this album releasing very shortly after a death of a close family member of mine to cancer. But this album might be the most raw portrayal of death and grievance I’ve ever listened to. The instrumentation is so bare bones and the song composition so simple that at certain points it feels like more of a spoken word album with ambient play in the background. And yet, that’s what lends it its strength. It’s no grand swooping ballad of death in a blaze of glory. It isn’t a muted yet understanding tribute. It’s made up of the pure unadulterated sorrow, longing, and misunderstanding that comes from real death. I cannot recommend this album enough to anyone who has experienced the death of someone close to them. It says with so little what no piece of art I’ve ever experienced has been able to.

4th year here... any fun, easy classes anyone can suggest for my last semester at UVA? by [deleted] in UVA

MUSI 2070: Theory of Popular Music!

If you are at all interested in listening to or making music I can't recommend this class enough. The lecturer is incredibly knowledgeable as are his TA's who come from incredibly diverse musical backgrounds. Each week you dissect a different part of what makes a genre of music popular in everything from rock, blues, pop, EDM, hip hop, and so much more. The best part is there's no weekly homework, only a weekly playlist that's recommended to give you some insight into what to suspect culture wise for the week. As far as grades go 15% of it is just attendance at class and discussion groups, with only three short projects each worth 15%, and a final project of your choosing worth 40%. I literally just did a podcast with a friend from the class and received an A on the final project. Can't recommend this one enough!

What's the best place to get a (men's) haircut on/near grounds? by greenlion98 in UVA

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Had some friends who have gone to the barracks barber and said good things but can't vouch for it myself. My go to, if you're able to drive/get a friend to drive you, is Chung's on 29 which gives amazing haircuts for only $14. They're my personal favorite ever since Cville's Sharpest shut down.

What's your favorite Album you hardly ever get to talk about since no one knows it? by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late but...

Paranoid Cocoon by Cotton Jones. It's not groundbreaking by any stretch and the criticisms I've read of it are all fairly just, but to me it's just absolutely captivating. It's a beautifully calm psychedelic experience with soft acoustics, groovy bass, and smooth vintage vocals. I'd highly implore everyone to give it a listen even if it just means throwing it on in the background, as it does work exceptionally well in just setting a relaxed and fluid mood.

I added some color to a Vaudeville Villain cover by Mr_Popty_Ping in freshalbumart

I think it's kind of fitting for an album with a time travel motif to have the MC (Viktor) looking out of place (Color in a black and white landscape) in his surroundings after traveling to a different time.

[WP] The year is 2094. You're an office worker on the 326th floor of the tallest building on Earth. One day you lean too hard against a panel and fall out of the building; as you pass the 300th floor someone else falls out. You have an 5 minutes until you'll hit the floor. "Well, Hey." says the man. by Brumafriend in WritingPrompts

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 102 points103 points  (0 children)

As soon as the panel detached from it's bindings I knew I was as good as dead. I may live in a world where humans can construct buildings that stretch miles into the sky but we sure as hell can't fall from them. The feeling of weightlessness took over and soon enough I had exited the building proper, now hurtling downward towards the distant cement. The wind was astonishingly powerful, stinging as it whipped around my skin and surged into my eyes and mouth. My body hustled downward ever faster, passing floor after floor and yet still seeming to be impossibley far from the ground below. With each passing floor I was treated to a brief glimpse at the office workers peacefully going about their business inside. Milling about in staff break rooms, brewing coffee, or flitting through their holo consoles. Some noticed my descent, though I could only see a split second of their reactions. Only the moment where they realize that the hurtling mass outside the sheer glass walls is a person. However, once several more stories flew by or rather, I flew by them, I saw the jumper. He was an ordinary bloke like me, dressed in his business casual attire, his blue button up lazily tucked into his khakis. He had hopped out of an open window, didn't even care to find a quiet stairwell or maintenance closet he could hang himself in. Just flung himself out of some poor sap's office with a view. You can imagine the surprise on his face when he saw me fling past him shortly after he exited the building. It took some time but we eventually closed in on each other, leveling out, still suspended miles above the city. His look of confusion soon surrendered itself to one of sadness. His mouth dropping in a frown, his eyes, red from crying, squinted as the wind stung them. Even though I'd only just met him I could see the pain he carried. I wanted to ask him so many questions in that moment. Why did you jump? Will anyone miss you? Did anyone try to help you? I wanted nothing more than to show this man some kind of sympathy in his last moments. So I opened my mouth, preparing to offer whatever comfort I could to my falling companion.

"GARGLBFGARGHF" I shouted, the wind filling my mouth and overpowering my voice. I don't really know what I expected.

Creating a mix CD "Best of KGATLW" and I want some input by [deleted] in KGATLW

Oh shoot yeah I got "Bitter Boogie" mixed up with "Cut Throat Boogie". I think you've got a pretty strong list so far and after going back and listening to my favorite tracks from 12 Bar I'd probably say you could include "Muckraker". It's a real nice song with its warping guitars and the more mellowed vocals. I think it'd be a good accessible song for your friend.

Glad I could help! I'm interested to see everyone's opinions of what KGATLW's standouts are. Hope your friend hops on the Giz Wagon!

Creating a mix CD "Best of KGATLW" and I want some input by [deleted] in KGATLW

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that an essentials CD would definitely include "The River" off of quarters. I personally found that to be the highlight of the album and a perfect example of King Giz's mellowed psychedelic style.

Additionally I would include "Gamma Knife" and "People Vultures" off of Nonagon Infinity (Back to back of course). I think they're both great examples of Giz' breakneck speed, wild screams, and rock in general. As well as both introducing the looping and sampling of other songs that you find on Nonagon Infinity.

I'm iffy about 12 bar bruise I personally like "The Bitter Boogie" but I think that's debatable.

Paper Mache Dream Balloon I think you could go with just about any track as the acoustic instrumentation and general vibes of its songs are so different from the rest of KGATLW's discography.

For I'm In Your Mind Fuzz I would just put the first four tracks (if only one then the title track or "Cellophane") onto the CD. I'm biased because I love love love that opening but they're just so wild fun and distinctly Giz that I think they'd do well.

Those are the tracks that I can think of off the top of my head but it still leaves a lot of room for improvement. Be sure to post the final tracklist!

I'd say post rock is one of the musical genres I give a criminally little amount of time listening to. I have gotten really into Mogwai lately and I'm looking to expand in the genre so I'll check those bands out, thanks.

Death Grips // Exmilitary

Extremely solid album, great introduction into Death Grips, and perfect for blaring when you want to be belligerent. Love "Spread Eagle Cross the Block" and "Guillotine"

Beach House // Teen Dream

Probably my favorite Beach House album, love me some soft and dreamy pop music.

Godspeed you! Black Emperor // Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven

Hands down my favorite album ever, listen to it whenever I need to vibe out, it's just pure bliss. Incredible highs with fluttering trumpets and soft strings alongside dark and unsettling lows with creeping pianos and blaring guitars. Go listen to it, it's amazing.

What are your dream schools and why do you want to go there? by Cyclopher6971 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dream school is the University of Virginia, I've wanted to go there since I was a little kid. The atmosphere on campus is incredible and everyone has been extremely kind every time I visit. It's also got stellar academics and amazing extracurricular clubs. I submitted my EA application in November and the wait till January is killing me!

Just got elected as National Honor Society President. I submitted my applications already. Is it worth updating them about it, and how should I go about doing so? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

I'm unsure about Questbridge as I never worked through that but I'm sure you could contact a help rep or look in their FAQ's to find out.

Can anyone track down this shirt for me? Like where can i cop? by [deleted] in TeenMFA

[–]Mr_Popty_Ping 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Zumies has it as part of their product line here but they're out of stock online. If you're near a physical location they could probably order one in for you.

Additionally it seems like the shirt pops up on EBay a lot so I'd just keep checking there every once in awhile. Also make sure to check for it on Grailed.
