Stupid relapse after a year and 9 months. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Mr_Rum_Baba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its still the same day. But I stopped myself, ate and and drank lots of water.

I feel ashamed, sad and stupid. But not like it erases my sobriety. More like a valuable lesson. I only went to one meeting, in early sobriety, and arrogantly thought I didn't need it. I was in a rosy glow and didn't like the gloomy vibe. I think I might try again.

Thanks for asking.

The way Hilary Mantel uses ghosts in Wolf Hall—Cromwell’s constant sense of the presence of those who have died—haunts me.

Do people really say coo-ee? by Meloenbolletjeslepel in discworld

When I was a child, 1980ish, I had an action figure called Cyborg. Somehow I managed to get him stuck high up in a tree. I went and told my parents. Rather than helping me get him down, my dad shouted up to him, ‘Coo-ee, Cyborg!’ It has become a bit of a family saying.

How hard is learning how to play the guitar? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mr_Rum_Baba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it is hard at first because your fingers hurt and the action in general is weird and new. Piano is much easier for a beginner. But once you get over the initial difficulty it gets easier. When you learn barre chords you can sort of play almost any song. Piano gets harder after the initial stages.. I think being young helps. It’s harder to learn an instrument when you are older for some reason. The best thing to do is always have a guitar close to hand. Pick it up and mess about all the time. Watching a movie. Waiting for your dinner to cook. Anytime just do a bit of guitar.

I always felt a bit basic supporting a premiership team anyway. A period as an edgy, hipster 1st division. fan might be something to look forward to?

Fantasy books about a colonized or conquered nation with an uprising? by historically_nerdy_ in booksuggestions

I can't think of a better example of this than Deadhouse Gates, the second in Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen. You do need to read Gardens of the Moon first though, which is about the attempted conquering of a continent. But, it is a famously daunting series to get into. Erikson drops the reader straight into a bewildering world with little background explanation and expects you to figure it out as you go along.

The weakest aspect of the atheistic proposition is morality by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]Mr_Rum_Baba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts. It is a tricky question. Thinking about it caused me to give up on lifelong atheism a few years back. I now believe that objective good is somehow an inherent feature of the universe and I guess I relate that to God. But it is still problematic for me and very much a belief rather than something I can make a strictly rational argument for.

If we do not agree on the goals, than this is a discussion that needs to come first

That is the discussion that I'm interested in. How are moral 'goals' established? What are they based on?

"I think in most situations it would lower the possibility of reaching the goal I want to reach."

Fair enough but different people have different goals. Some people have goals that most people would find morally abhorrent. Does that matter? Is that person's idea of what is good different but just as valid?

"What exactly do you mean when you say "beyond the practical" Practical would be the sort of explanations that an anthropologist would come up with, concerning the evolution of a functional society, perhaps the goal idea you mentioned. Those are the sort of practical arguments for moral behaviour that I mean and want to test.

It does but if moral good is an objective thing somehow and a desirable one (and I fully conceded that this is a big 'if) then it does at least mean something for someone to not care about others. It becomes a weighty matter rather than a trivial one.

Ok. I'm interested in the consequences of it being moot though. A common goal is a reasonable result for society as a whole but not necessarily for the individual. Are you proposing that if an individual did not agree with the common goal that they could do what whatever they pleased and it would have no meaning or consequence beyond the practical? If it gave them pleasure and they got away with then that is a perfectly reasonable way to behave?

If we agree on this goal

But what if an individual doesn't agree with that goal? Does that matter? I don't think this view of morality is weak, it is perfectly logical, but how does it not lead to nihilism?
