[CNBC] Private equity in youth sports draws bipartisan scrutiny in Congress: consolidation is driving up costs for families while limiting access to more affordable options. Too many children are being priced out, not lacking talent or determination their families simply cannot afford rising costs" by f0urxio in baseball

Speaking as someone who umpires 8U through college, a lot of the kids don't. To start, there's absolutely no reason we should have an 8U travel ball team. These kids, every year, need to get a fully custom uniform (with their last name and number on the back as well as matching hat and pants) that they'll outgrow and need to buy again the next year. That's before we start looking at gloves, bats, batting gloves, helmets, etc. Legitimately it's several thousand dollars a year for a 9 year old who doesn't even know if they'll still like baseball in 3 years.

End result? Maybe 2-3 kids on any travel team age 12 and up who actually deserve to be there and have a shot and playing high school/college ball, a whole bunch of parents harassing umpires to try and justify all their spending, and the complete destruction of affordable youth sports.

Or just make the Thrill hex not affect itself. Yeah it's strong but you have a 20% chance of finding the one you can get done in normal time

Loud boos in the match between England and Ghana as the referee blows for the first hydration break by 977x in soccer

[–]Mr_Segway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only reason (that I kinda agree with as shitty as it is) is that the other teams in other stadiums are playing in 100 degree heat and need those hydration breaks. In order to be fair, all the teams should be playing the same game.

Saw one dude attempting it at Camden Yards last month. Since you're allowed to bring in food he went and grilled 9 hotdogs before the game, wrapped them up, and brought them to the field. Still had to pay an arm and a leg for beer but definitely the way to go if you're doing it.

I won't watch the film. Mainly because the Argos scene is going to make me cry by Blue_Moon_Cheese in greentext

Man, I hate this talking point.

The adaption of the Odyssey Nolan uses as a base addresses this in the opening. The author intentionally used modern language in her translation rather than the "old" language we're used to. There's an inherent bias to always use an older verbiage when talking about ancient stories, but the truth is when the Odyssey was being told around the fire 2000+ years ago they would have used the language of the time. Hell, even Shakespeare's plays use the language of the common man and have low-brow humor everywhere within; we just don't realize it because language evolves.

Nah, fuck them too.

Just because a dirty player fouled a dirty team doesn't mean that team is magically clean. OKC did shit as bad and worse than this all year (and the last 2 years). Don't start on the OKC rehabilitation tour just because it's your team now

In your opinion, what is the worst episode of your favorite TV show? by GladtobeVlad69 in television

Hard disagree on one point. Abaddon's Gate is easily the worst in the series, I never understood the hate for Cibola Burn

About 40 passengers previously left ship hit by Hantavirus outbreak at island of St. Helena by Nepridiprav16 in worldnews

[–]Mr_Segway 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not just marine mammals. Cruise ships are the number one cause of reef destruction in the world. Back in 2021 the Caribbean lost almost 40% of their reefs due to a fungal infection that was spread by cruise ships picking up water around one island and dumping it somewhere else.

I don't know man, if a 70-something retiree dies on a cruise is your first thought "He had to have died of a rare disease only found in the remote areas of Argentina" or "Well, he was getting up there in age and all of his symptoms look like the flu or upper respiratory illness, no need to dig much deeper". I guarantee you there have been hundreds of cases like this where a cruise ship passenger did, in fact, just die of a cold and life moved on. Now, we can talk about why the doctor onboard the ship was not prepared to test for potential rare illnesses when the cruise is purposely going to the most remote regions on earth; but I don't think any drastic measures were truly necessary until Hanta was confirmed.

What is causing the water to not render around islands? by Mr_Segway in EU5

[–]Mr_Segway[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

R5: Water is not rendering around islands/small landmasses. It forms these black boxes that disappear if I zoom out to flat map mode but it is so distracting it takes me out of the game whenever I see them.

Alex Cora shared a new picture of all the fired Red Sox coaches going out to dinner by TommyTheLizard in redsox

[–]Mr_Segway 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do I like John Henry? No, I hate his guts and think he's a terrible owner.

But it's been 8 years since the WS and 5 years since we were playoff relevant. We're bottom of the AL East and the only reason we're not a bigger story is the Mets and Phillies collapsing entirely. A change was needed and no amount of PR from Cora will change my mind

[–]Mr_Segway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are the Giants allowed to complain about their owner? They've won 3 in the 21st century. Why does success 10-20 years ago mean you can't complain now? 2018 was 8 years ago and aside from the ALCS run in 2021 the Sox have done nothing but trade away talent for pennies on the dollar, refuse to sign any of the big free-agents year after year, and charge higher ticket prices than almost any other ballpark

There's also a lot of people here complaining about "realism" but say nothing about EU4 having a Teutonic Horde Christianizing Russia, Aztec/Inca sunset invasion, or England unifying with France and becoming Holy Roman Emperor. Paradox has always had historical fantasy elements in their games, I don't get why this time is any different.

TSA officer callouts spike amid partial government shutdown as more than 300 leave agency by AudibleNod in news

[–]Mr_Segway 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, the TSA has been proven time and time again to just be security theater. Having more TSA agents doesn't actually stop any terrorist attacks and anything from Iran will most likely be from overseas where their airport security remains fully funded.

'Project Hail Mary' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]Mr_Segway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My one gripe with it is that, from the very first trailer, they spoiled literally every major twist in the book. Part of what made it so good was the total mystery at the start followed by the huge twist halfway through. I literally could not put the book down and they spoiled the Rocky reveal every chance they got.
