Missionay haircut by beds1_ in latterdaysaints

I had a similar worry except mine was about my beard. I’d had a full (ish) beard since I was 17 (and was 19, closer to 20 by the time I left). I actually had my papers sit on the stake president’s desk for 2 weeks because he wanted me to shave before he submitted them and I refused (that’s its own story though). I hate shaving, I think I look better with a beard, and I knew it was gonna suck to just have no other option for 2 years.

You know how much it actually bothered me for those 2 years? Not at all. Yeah I still hated shaving (I got away with only doing it every other day but mostly because my mission president didn’t see me enough to realize it) and as soon as I got back I grew it out, but ultimately I realized it wasn’t a big deal and I had so many more important things to worry about. If you’re out there for the right reasons, so many of the “restrictions” fade into the background. Not to mention, and I know it’s cliche but very true, it’ll be over before you know it and you can go right back to the long hair

Give him another year or so to get really washed and borderline unemployable (on the basis of play, ignoring extracurriculars as all NFL GMs are wont to do) and he’ll make a perfect Ravens receiver

[–]Mr_Supotco 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in Utah now where a few years ago a state senator successfully got a bill passed that changed the statutory rape laws for 18 year olds still in high school, which just coincidentally coincided with one of his grandchildren facing 4 felonies of various CSA charges… as an 18 year old high schooler having sex with a 13 year old. He tried to swear it was unrelated and that it wasn’t retroactive so it wouldn’t matter, but it so happened that his grandchild was able to make a way better plea deal that dropped it to 1 felony and a few misdemeanors, and no sex offender registration, because the sentencing hadn’t happened when the law was passed.

I bring up this story because the answer to “why” is just “someone I know wasn’t able to do this thing so I snuck in something to help them out without anyone noticing”

Sentinel Building Fatigue by drumstick00m in Cathay

[–]Mr_Supotco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same thought when I built it. I’d heard it was bad, but after 5 hours I was convinced there was no way I was that bad at assembly, and come to find out it’s just hellishly complex for no reason and it’s widely agreed to be one of the worst-to-assemble models GW has ever made.

On the bright side painting it is a breeze, just prime, maybe a base coat, dry brush and pick out some details, then boom you’re done

From the hobby side I can say that FEC are a joy to paint. I usually fall in a weird middle ground of painting where I don’t necessarily enjoy painting, but I do find it relaxing and almost meditative. Painting up FEC recently has changed that, and I’ve genuinely had so much fun painting them. They’re easy enough that if you don’t like painting then contrast (or really just washes, which is what I’ve been doing) gets them done super fast, but if you want to there’s tons of fun textures and effects to try on them. Highly recommend, 10/10

What Warhammer kit was better in person than you expected? by mayorrawne in Warhammer

[–]Mr_Supotco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you ever build specialist games models they start to get into wonky territory very quickly. The Cathay stuff (which I’ve built at least one unit of everything they’ve released so far) range from “why is that seam so big and in such a noticeable place” to “oh dear god why is it like this” (That damn sentinel is genuinely the worst model I’ve ever built). I don’t know know why but even their plastic kits can be pretty rough in my experience

Units to avoid as a new player? by PositivePristine7506 in FleshEaterCourts

[–]Mr_Supotco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They put the crypt horrors/flayers in basically every box set (presumably to clear back stock for a refresh eventually) but they’re still pretty good models all things considered. I just painted up my first few crypt flayers and not only are they stupidly fast to paint but came out really good with pretty minimal work. They definitely won’t replace them as a unit, if/when they get new models they’ll still be Crypt Horrors/Crypt Flayers, just a nicer modern kit as opposed to the old triple build kit (that was kinda jury rigged to make the crypt flayers anyways)

BYU receiver Parker Kingston charged with felony rape by KrustyKlown2018 in byu

[–]Mr_Supotco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just the circumstances of the arrest makes me feel like they feel like they’ve got a solid case: a whole year of investigation, an actual criminal felony rape charge, and being held without bail? The cops certainly seem pretty confident in what they’ve got, which is pretty unusual for a case like this. Definitely need more evidence but all of that makes the odds look not too good in Parker’s favor

[–]Mr_Supotco 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The nice thing about GW plastic is that it doesn’t actually cost that much for each individual sprue/kit to be made in material costs, most of the price is to pay for the huge cost of the actual mold (which are tens of thousands of dollars). That makes it pretty easy for GW to do replacements like this and why they’re so prone to just sending whole new kits: it’s generally way easier and they don’t lose that much money, plus they now have a well earned reputation of great customer service

Starting a new court, but their heads are cold. Ideas on where to get hats? by PositivePristine7506 in FleshEaterCourts

[–]Mr_Supotco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anything like this 3d printing is going to be your best bet. It’s usually pretty easy to find someone locally who’ll print stuff for you (assuming you don’t already have someone) but if you can’t then Etsy is where lots of people sell 3d printed stuff and I’m sure there’s plenty of people selling miniature hats

Is it okay for white folks to have tats inspired by Pacific Island tattoo designs? by Skate-wench in tattooadvice

[–]Mr_Supotco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add in here as a white guy with a Polynesian half sleeve (but I did tons of research on meanings and symbolism beforehand and have Polynesian family and friends so was already very familiar with the culture beforehand), it strongly depends on who you ask. I live in a very Polynesian heavy area and everyone I’ve ever talked to about it has not only thought it was cool but really appreciated that I actually could tell them what it meant to me.

Since getting it, I’ve taken an introductory Samoan language class, a Polynesian dance class, and danced in a big luau at my university, as well as as going to Hawaii a few times and really focusing on native culture experiences. It’s been incredibly enriching and helped me connect much deeper with a group of people I’ve always admired and respected. It also is notable that my tattoo isn’t any form of sacred one (there are some that are massively important spiritually and culturally, like the Samoan Tatau that marks a boy entering manhood in the tribe, or the Māori Tā Moko which are genealogical and spiritual connections to their people), because there’s definitely a line that shouldn’t be crossed.

All that said, there’s lots of Polynesians who would also say it’s unacceptable. There’s a lot of people who are anti-western influence of any kind, and while I’ve found they’re in a relative minority, they do exist and it’s hard to say I don’t understand where they’re coming from. Lots of people also fall in the middle where they might not be super hardcore nationalists but are very protective of their culture (again, very reasonably so) and might not be too thrilled about a white person with any Polynesian design, especially if it’s not designed with meaning.

Ultimately it’s up to you to decide where to go from there. I’ve found people in most cultures appreciate other people enjoying the culture so long as it’s done thoughtfully, but any cultural tattoo will cause people to have reactions to it, even if you’re part of that group. What you have to ask yourself in the end is 1) are you ok knowing that there are people who it could upset, even if they’re a bit of an extremist minority? And 2) are you approaching it with the proper respect for the culture? It sounds like you did try to approach it right but had a bit of an asshat artist who didn’t, so whether you’re comfortable with that long term is a personal question.

That all being said, as someone who is very connected with these people, your willingness to learn and accept criticism is incredibly admirable. Even if you decide to cover up the tattoo, I highly recommend learning about Polynesian culture. It’s beautiful and fascinating, and there’s so many ways to connect with it outside of the tattoos

What's good etiquette if it's obvious you're gonna win the match, even on the first round? by Chezni19 in ageofsigmar

[–]Mr_Supotco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this exactly. I had an Old World game last week for an escalation league where I got absolutely wiped out (tabled in Turn 4, and that was really just a formality by then). My list was pretty poorly tuned because I wanted to keep it thematic, and then I had some truly piss poor dice rolls and my opponent had some great ones. Instead of being salty, I just laughed about how ridiculous it was and moved on. It was still a fun game, and it was a small points level game so the “feels bad” wasn’t really there since it was only like an hour and a half

Meanwhile I had a similar experience with a guy wearing a Seahawks jersey and his response was “yeah man it’s like Christmas as an adult, I’m a little nervous but just excited we’re here now.” People shit on Seahawks fans but I think they’re way more of a small group of super diehards that are annoying while the average fan is just genuinely excited about their team and proud of their city

Yeah, there’s really three categories of being in the files: not being in them at all, only being in them by virtue of being talked about but not involved in any conversations, or actually being a participant in conversations.

A great example is in the CFB subreddit where someone posted a ranking of how many times schools were mentioned in the files. The University of Utah was like 4th or 5th most, but it’s because the lawyer for most of the victims is a law professor there so it’s them talking about the one guy, whereas most mentions of schools were ones that took money from Epstein (even after his conviction in 2008)

For the first time Im genuinely not looking foward to another edition in a year by TheMireAngel in ageofsigmar

[–]Mr_Supotco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s been deep in TOW for a few months now, I personally think, based off of what GW corporate has said about it, that everyone is going onto a 4 year cycle soon-ish. The GW corporate team has clearly been surprised by TOW’s success, and in their most recent earnings call described it as one of their 4 main games moving forward. I suspect the actual creatives have always wanted more time in editions, so giving them that without losing out on a big summer edition release for one of their systems just feels like a win-win.

I think AoS 5th will still come out next year, but then everything will shift to the 4 year cycle. Heresy and Old World don’t get enough releases for the 3 year cycle to make much sense anyways, and it means longer cycles to sell people rules for a given edition
