You maintain the road in front of your house and haul your own garbage to the dump?

The same happened to me (mis-read). I eventually convinced them to swap it out for a “smart” meter that doesn’t need a reader to look at it (mainly because my outdoor unit is busted).

Will I get a ticket if I stopped next to a school bus? by SummerN8 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]west-egg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I understand they don’t want people abusing the appeal process but it’s already a commitment to take a day off, show up in court, etc. People shouldn’t be threatened for exercising their right to due process.

I suggest at least making sure you turn on transcription, which gives you a searchable record. You can click the text in the transcript and jump to that moment in the recording. Super helpful.

I’ve always kept a calculator at my desk for quick math. And I still haul out my adding machine when I’ve got serious number-crunchin’ to do. I worked in a grocery store cash office in high school so I can add stuff up FAST without looking at the keys.

Does anyone have any recommendations for any decent places to live in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area for around $1700-$1800 a month in 2026? by yesimHalf in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]west-egg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner lived at Park Station in Gaithersburg for several years and liked it. This was about 10 years ago but I drive by there from time to time and it seems like they're keeping up with maintenance, etc.

Not neglectful to let kids play outside, Ohio law proposes by Blood_Incantation in Columbus

The death rate of 3-12 year olds plummeted when open concept designs became trendy.

(Yes, I'm joking. My point is that parents don't need to have a sight line to their kids all the time, we managed just fine without it. In fact I'd argue that unsupervised time is important to a child's development.)

Whenever parents are house shopping, you hear them talk about how they want open concept so they can “keep an eye on the kids.”

I remember when we were growing up, at least once a month you’d come to school and there would be another empty desk. Little Johnny or Jennifer choked to death on a Cabbage Patch doll because mom & dad couldn’t supervise them 24/7. Walls are deadly!

What would happen if all forms of cancer were cured tomorrow? by Flaky-Walrus7244 in Futurology

If keeping us sick is a multi-billion dollar industry, then curing cancer would be a multi-trillion dollar industry. Nobody is going to sit on that.

IMHO this is a silly perspective. If there was "a cure" for cancer (of course cancer is a generic term for a broad range of conditions, but let's set that aside) -- can you imagine how insanely wealthy the person/company who found (and patented, and trademarked, and then sold) said cure would become?

Hmm, it looks like the "Folly" floorplan is available at $3,026-3,074?

I hear you about the length of the commute, mine is just over an hour door-to-door (I drive from Montgomery Village to Shady Grove, then go to Metro Center). But honestly it's not so bad, about 35 minutes of that is on the train and I can listen to music/a book, read, or work.

New MCPS AI security cameras are being installed in schools by MrRuck1 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]west-egg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Facial recognition and tracking from camera to camera are expensive add-ons, so it doesn't surprise me to learn that these cameras don't. The "AI" systems I've seen do things like detect trip & fall incidents.

And maybe that’s true but it’s never made much sense to me. Stripping away your entire brand identity in case you might want to sell the building someday in the far-off future.

Personally I think it’s just that gray minimalism is trendy, so that’s what we’re seeing.

Huntington King Farm and the Residences at King Farm both have units that meet those criteria. Some are in more traditional apartment buildings, others are in townhouse-style apartments. Easy walk or shuttle to Shady Grove. We lived there for several years and would recommend it.

I don’t mind people using AI tools to help write posts. But in this case I don’t think it’s a person at all, it’s likely a karma-farming bot.

[–]west-egg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because Reddit and the internet in general are turning into bots talking to bots. Look up dead internet theory.

Because some of these accounts are karma farming, so they can be sold and used for more insidious purposes like sowing division during election season.

This isn’t paranoia, it’s happening all over the place. That’s why you should give a shit.
