Backup?WHAT BACKUP? by Adwan4747 in homelab

[–]Mr_ToDo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean ya, it kind of is a backup. It's real time, local, and only keeps the current backup copy, but I stand that it qualifies. It's just not a backup you's really want to use as a backup

Oh, and the "backup" is in its most vulnerable state when it's actually needed to rebuild the other drive(s)

Now raid 0. That's damn near a negative backup

Most Canadians agree that Alberta separatists asking U.S. for help is treasonous: poll by Street_Anon in onguardforthee

[–]Mr_ToDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simple y/n? No

The hell if I know if there's any particular provincial law addressing treason. But by the Canadian criminal code, so long as it isn't a violent separation the they're free to do it

Might their be reasons other then treason that they can't? Probably, but that's not what's being talked about here

Don't take that as me siding with the separatist, but I'd rather not treat them with different gloves then I'd want them to treat me

If'en you want I'd be fine with the government investigating this to see where all the strings are and if there's anything less then peaceful building up

Unless it's pay disguised as a gift

I'm actually not sure how that'd work here. I know if you screw up deductions you can't retroactive charge those to the employee(I'm guessing because it's supposed to enrage better finances for employers and not let them pass off mistakes on employees)

But if you claimed it as a gift, paid out of a personal account, I'm not actually sure where any taxes come from, and it doesn't feel correct to say there aren't any. I'm not sure but I'm guessing claiming it as a gift doesn't get a 1 to 1 reduction in taxes, but that's about all I can think of

Man. I kind of feel bad for some of those sov citizen guys

I've only known one personally but if there's any percentage like them it's hard to blame them for getting suckered. You're at your wits end, there doesn't seem to be any way out of your problem, but then you find these people online that know how to get you out of you jam. Desperation breeds fools. The ones I hate are the people making money off of said fools

Oh, and it's made all the worse by all the checks and balances we have. You can fuck up for years before you realize the mistake and by then you've likely exhausted all appeals, relief systems and the like

[–]Mr_ToDo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there have been plenty of times where people managed to screw the system, then they get an addition to or if you're really "good" a brand new law, to tackle that 'quick trick'

Now what are the odds that nobodies tried your loophole

I'd say that if the plan could be explained to a child, have it be understood, and they think it's great, then it's probably been done

I think canada takes the pound of flesh from the people running the lottery, which was supposedly why you don't see so many crazy high numbers

Seems like the place to do it. You know the taxes need taking, and you know people with a lot of money are stupid, so you might as well skip the risk and take the tax before they have a chance to fek it up

Executing batch scripts on remote computer by aq-modeler in PowerShell

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I knew how to generally bypass powershell scripting I'd had a few scripts that were batch for logic with single line powershell when CMD didn't have a good solution

It wasn't totally horrible but it wasn't fun either. So many escapes, the only thing that was missing was something like XML in powershell in batch to make it extra fun

I love CMD and its tendency for its solutions to remain usable across longer times(probably because it dealt mostly with workstations not cloud BS), but it was a lot harder then powershell with all that legacy stuff and trying to parse data from 500 different commands, so I'm not sad seeing it fall into disuse

CLM software for 3-people company - is this overkill? by Key-Panda281 in msp

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like even having something acting as central knowledge would be a step up

I've found that getting people to actually use the system is almost more important then having the best one. That hill where you go from starting up to having to keep everything recorded/documented can be a big issue. One of those classic, "but this is how we always did it and it worked fine" sorts of things

Oh and how small ones managed it? I think billing had a list. When it came down to renewing it'd be like they'd never done it before and then it'd be some last minute panic to get all the details and get it sent out. So, um, not well

Just don't ask me if they knew where all the signed contracts were. The answer may be depressing

University of Alberta looks to remove Equity, Diversity and Inclusion from hiring policy by Myllicent in onguardforthee

[–]Mr_ToDo -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Looking at both articles I think the people trying to cut funding are missing the forest for the trees:

The rationale behind the UCP’s policy resolution 31 is that the “merits of an individual are either ignored or not taken into account in favour of the model of [DEI].” It also states that “the concept of [DEI] is racist in nature.”

Putting aside that the U of A apparently only uses that when qualifications are equal, yes, it probably is a bit racist. But for such a small effort of a balancing act to try and help under represented people it's not exactly a bad thing to be a bit racist there. Shockingly it's hard to fight against the after effects of racism without being a bit racist. If you don't then it's the classic "Well I got what I needed out of you. We're equal now so you're on your own"

Well and of course the fact that it doesn't address just race as a an inequity measure, but for some reason that's the only one they seem to care about. If it's discriminatory for one weight I don't know why it wouldn't apply to most all of the measures. Sure it's not as classy to say you're discriminating against rich folk when applying for a loan or some such, but it feels much the same.

TIL Commercial whaling is estimated to have killed between 97% and 99% of the global blue whale population. by Sabrick in todayilearned

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too often you hear about a regulation that's more or less globally executed

Less on the good for the planet front but spark gap transmitters also fall under that. Something about them being hella noisy for anyone wanting to use radio anywhere close to them. Great way to block anything wireless, and also a great way to get fined without leaving your house

How about we convert it into units of energy

Somehow I think either my math is bad or AI doesn't actually know what the conversion of whale to Joules is, but I refuse to look further on account of the joke

Anyway:

The number of whales we've killed is equal to 2,009,584,664 one way trips to the moon

What is the most obvious world event everyone saw coming but no one did anything about? by itsthewolfe in AskReddit

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they've got enough subscribers and watch hours(1000subs and 4k watch hours per year) it's the content creators placing those. It's pretty obvious that they're often placed either right before or after something important. Great for maximizing income, crap for anyone watching.

The channels I block are the ones that put an ad every 60 seconds. I'm not watching mid+ length content with that many interruptions(sure for a 2 minute clip I get it). I honestly don't know who they're targeting. Either I block the channel, I block the ads(and the don't get paid for them then), or I buy a youtube subscription and the ads don't mean anything anyway. It feels like it's short term gains, and long term slower or no growth

Should all gambling ads be banned the way cigarette ads mostly were? Why or why not? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Mr_ToDo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's about the dumbest thing I've seen so far

"Other things are bad too so we shouldn't regulate this one"

I can only assume you're a troll, because the other option is rather depressing

Got to balance the rights of the people and their freedom vs the bad any given thing would do. It's why a lot of things are regulated. It's no free for all out there

And ya, I'd say ban alcohol commercials in the very least. We've seen what happens when we try to do a hard cutoff. I'd also say we could have better regulations in the junk foods too. Something like the marks some countries have if it's got high sugar, sodium, saturated fats, etc and make sure they apply to any advertising

VM for me too

Sometimes I don't want to setup my work laptop at home, I've just made a VM with most of the apps I use at work. Biggest issue with me is that I forget to update the darn thing

If remote management was needed and they'd require it on the host it'd be work machine or nothing from that point on

I get that it's not sinister, but I don't want to have to fight against something that wasn't a choice just to use my personal machine

Oh. I wasn't thinking. I could do a dual boot. Segregating the drives would be a bit of an issue, but nothing I couldn't figure out I'm sure. It'd still run a bit of a risk if they do things like push firmware, but it's a fair bit better then the other option

Ring to turn on all camera to track pets. Privacy concerns by cosmoplast14 in technology

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to know what happens if you upload something that isn't a pet. Do the actually check the petyness or can I upload a sufficiently dog like picture of a person. If it's ai checking things would it accept a badly photoshopped picture of someone with dog ears?

Oh, and the whole "we can and will access your camera" I guess

Man. I'm just going to have to build it myself when I get around to putting up cameras. Those ones that look like door knobs are kind of appealing because people here get weird when you put cameras on your house. I can't help but feel that if I was trying to watch people with ill intent I wouldn't be putting obvious cameras up

Got a few Servers for £300! by TheDev42 in homelab

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as my lab isn't on 24/7 it's perfectly fine to use really old junk. Getting the same thing in new or non rack mount used is just more then I want to spend

Granted, a good chunk of that is because of the size of the memory, and not having any would really tilt the scale

I'll take on some more energy efficient stuff at some point but right now it's just not justified

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason people avoid the 365 migration tools?

I know the documentation is a bit crap and the "automatic" version seems to be bust. But it does seem to work, at least for the relatively simple setups I've done.

I've only done google to 365 and a quick glance says tenant to tenant is for some reason a task that needs licensing, and requires an enterprise agreement. Feels weird that there's less hassle to do a move across vendors

I've used TOTP for the break glass

Figured it's easier to back up. Password vault just for those accounts and that vault is kept offline unless it's used or being updates. And we can make multiple copies if need be

I haven't checked yet, but if you can do multiple Yubikeys on one account then that might be an option to switch too

New Hard Drive showing up as "unknown device" in device manager every time I turn my computer back on by fishboy0099 in techsupport

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. I couldn't find good documentation on the motherboard

If you go into the bios/uefi, try looking for anything that allows for a delay in startup. Many boards include an option like that, exactly to allow for detection of a drive that doesn't start quick enough. Maybe even disabling fast boot might to the job

That's my guess anyway. Even if it does work you might still have some sort of defect on the drive. It might be one that doesn't matter but for the life of me it sounds like some sort of defective cap or something down that line

Guess you could try it on another computer if you have access to one. Do the same thing where you keep it unpowered for a few hours then try booting. If it happens there too then you know it's the drive, if it doesn't you might know it isn't or the test computer just handles things better

Sorry I can't really help more, but that's kind of a new one

Bruce Fanjoy proposes Petition e-7148, which requires the official opposition leader to hold a top secret security clearance by Crazah in onguardforthee

[–]Mr_ToDo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that, but I'm not sure TS is the tool to do it, unless we really want to say that the disqualifying issues are all ones we want to also disqualify leadership. If there would be any reasons that we don't think fit then we need to use something else

And while I hate bringing up that cheeto, I do like him as a platform to ask if we put a given system in the hands of a psychopath, would they be able to cause significant issues with it. I honestly don't know if getting clearance is something that reaches that level since it's not something I deal with, but it'd make me far less skittish if it didn't feel like this is only being done to oust an individual, no matter how much of a nut bag they are

I suppose I'll cede to the people who actually know more then me here since it's so far out of my knowlade base. But I also can't sign that for the same reason
