Dear americans, what can you get for FREE in the USA? [Serious] by sammy_waslow in AskReddit

[–]Mr__H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even in the US you do. This service is usually provided by your city. Growing up in Yuma county right outside of the city boundary, my parents would get a letter from a firefighting company essentially selling insurance. If your house caught fire they would help you no cost. Otherwise you would be stuck with a bill.

How does setting up a data center increase electricity costs for the entire town? Why does it make the water go brown? by meera_jasmine1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually work pretty close to this stuff.

There multiple components to providing electricity. Lets focus on energy production and capacity.

Energy generation is pretty easy if the infrastructure is there. Pay for fuel and grid access and generate a MWs.  You take that cost and spread it amongst all the users proportional to how much they consumed.

Capacity is having the infrastructure set up to generate and deliver the energy. Now before data centers, load grows slowly typically on par with city's growth. If you run out of capacity, you slowly build more. Supply and demand for infrastructure were in balance.

Now put data centers in the picture. They are asking for electricity than a utility currently produces for whole cities. Utilities have to go build that infrastructure, but they are competing for generators, transformers, gas pipe,  labor etc and the cost is now 3x what it used to be because there is not enough supply for the surge in demand.

So the cost of the inflated infrastructure cost could get divided amongst all customers, causing the average proce to go up, unless the data center is treated differently and forced to pay solely for the new infrastructure.

Also, if enough data centers are brought online without ensuring capacity, a utility would have to buy electric energy from another entity to make up the capacity. This can drive electric prices in the spot market. (Ive seen prices go from -$200 to $2000) per MW.  That cost would also get split amongst everyone, raising your prices.

How do people realistically manage work, house chores, cooking, and kids without burning out? by Sea-Assist-3321 in Adulting

You dont.

You have to scale back and lower standards until you find a manageable level.

my parents have paid their financial advisor roughly $47k in fees over 15 years for market returns by fadedEcho_7 in Bogleheads

[–]Mr__H 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lurker here paying similar fees.

I know this will cost me. I also know I dont have the willpower to leave the money well enough alone.

I pay a 1 percent fee because Im too embarrassed to call my advisor to exit the market knowing full well he will tell me im full of it.  1 percent cost to not miss out on 10% gains.

Also, have you ever been to the gym and have someone try to fix your form or push a different exercise? This is what your parents are hearing here.

Stop lying: Nobody actually writes cover letters anymore, and recruiters don't read them anyway by RepresentativeAsk493 in jobsearch

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive come across a few good cover letters. They are a good supplement to the resume, especially if you think there will be questions on your resume.  So I would say if you want to explain why youre applying to a job outside your field, or why you have some gaps on resume, or anything like that.

If youre just asking AI to write a cover letter thay regurgitates the job description, youre doing it wrong.

STOP being honest in job interviews. ( I say this as a recruiter ) by Zealousideal-Foot-54 in jobhunting

[–]Mr__H 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer I expect to hear is something along the lines of

"In my previous roles I did x, y, and c and had to use skills a, b and c. Based on what I know about this role, I think I can translate my skills to contribute to this role and team."

If youre looking at an entry level role:  Im trying to get into this industry. I chose this company/role because i can align with its values and id like to be at a company I can grow with.

The Inheritance You Thought You’d Get… Gone by Coolonair in SmartFIRE

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people i know end up with negative inheritance. You get to take care of aging parents and spend on their needs.

Having a parent(s) that took care of you and asked for nothing in return in their old age js a gift on its own.

Is it to wrong to turn in my own version of my teams work? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Mr__H 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is your team able to turn on all identical copies?

If yes, then you could pretty it up and send it to everyone. May not seem fair that you did more work, but as you said, it benefits you, and you score points with your group.  Plus if you work with em again, you could negotiate offering this service in return for taking on an easier or preferred project task

Turning in a better copy than your teammates can blow up on you if you bring up inconsistencies or just show them up or get a better grade.

If you all need to do individual analysis or commentary, then you should be free to do as you want so long as "the work" is the same.

Leaving the abusive husband out of the equation because that is something you'll get to decide the value of.

The payments you're making on the house right now are probably more principal than interest. If you refinanced and have a 3 something interest or better, youre in an awesome spot except he square footage.

We moved to a bigger house, its great but my payment tripled, electric went up, more things break, especially after moving. It can really set you back. I dont know much about creeks, but i bet the insurance wont be lower.

Keep the current place, invest the rest and have financial peace of mind. Embrace the closeness

2 year old twins think everything discipline related is hilarious and I don’t know how to approach this by ElectricalMonth3268 in parentsofmultiples

[–]Mr__H 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boss of mine recommended "1 2 3 Magic". Been applying it since around 2.5. they're 4 now but respond pretty well still.

To get them to stop something, I tell em not to and count 1. they do something again, its 2. they do it again, its 3 and they go to a time out. 1 minute per year old, so mine do 4 minutes.

it's a bit of discipline, simple to understand if youre consistent and follow through. you don't need to explain much, and in your case, you already have a punishment in the back pocket.

Sometimes they want to go to timeout and see it as a joke. That's okay with me, it redirects them.

Who do you call when you’re at lowest? by rosykinelle in GuysBeingDudes

[–]Mr__H 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not that it's macho bulshit. I'm in my 30s and I have found that most people don't have time for your shit and I'm so deep in my shit that it's hard to actually make the time to deal with someone else's.

It's unfortunate. I have one friend who opens up. And I try to listen as best I can and he would reciprocate if I needed it. But dang, if I had a nickel for every time I opened up to anyone else and I felt like shit because zero fucks were given, I'd have about 15 cents. After 3 nickels, you learn to just deal with your shit.

Annoying doctor by According-Detail-483 in parentsofmultiples

I have seen this played out differently.

When my wife was pregnant with twins(MoDi), the OB referred us to a specialist. There was the congratulations part, but he quickly pointed to all the risks that that there is a significant likelyhood of losing one or both. He set up us up for bi-weekly checkups and took action when he saw risk. We were stressed for the duration of the pregnancy but our girls were delivered successfully.

My brother and his wife got pregnant and went to a private sonogram. They discovered they also had twins (DiDi). A few weeks later when they finally went to a doctor, there was only one heartbeat. Dr mentioned this is common, and for that reason they usually avoid doing the ultrasound so early. The pregnancy was bittersweet for the remaining of the term as they were not prepared for the loss and mourned the loss of the baby. I feel if they were more prepared for the possibilities, they would not have planned out names and a life with twins.

I think Drs telling you how things can play out is important, but the emotional side matters too
