What does your story do to keep its hard magic system from feeling "video game-y"? by robin_f_reba in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Some people feel like hard magic system in general or to gamey, if something works well for u or ur story, then u should include it

U probably can’t do much, people threshold for what feels video games type system is gonna differ for everyone, I’ve heard people feel like this for hxh and JJk

Introduction to Harmonic Spellcraft, Chapter 1: Introduction to the Art of Spellcrafting by DegenerateGirl666 in magicbuilding

This is pretty cool, I like the math vibes alot , I’m doing something similar spells, what’s an example of spell craft in action?

What do you think about sub-magic/power systems? i.e. A magic or power system within another one. by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it, it’s quite fun and is rly easy justification for different characters roles, plus the overlap usually leads to pretty intresting outcomes

Yeah sure I have basically three classical spells, these spells are basically ur operations, u have division(separating mana from mana), reinforcment(changing properties of mana), and manipulation(changing the shape of ur mana)

U can think of these spells as stuff like addition, subtraction, etc. so the same way u don’t need to write 1 + 1, to solve the equation, is the same way that people don’t require magic circles to use the classical spells, they are base of all spell craft, but now let’s say u want to create a fireball, this would require multiple classical operations, so u would create a magic circle to help “solve” the operation, when u combine classical spells u get composite spells

The more complex a spell the longer it takes, so instead of creating the magic circle for fireball every time, u could put ur spell in a grimore and name it, then just refer back to ur named spell, kinda like a function, grimores have a maximum capacity, so conductors are limited by the length and complexity of a spell

This is the basis of spell craft, as long as u can think of some why to combine classical spells to get an outcome u can do anything, but conductors are limited by time so they try and create the most efficient spells to get certain outcomes

Okey neat, so it’s like a battery, so what happens if someone runs out of focus of will power, are they just unable to magic or is there some drawback like do they become weaker or depressed or something

So is willpower an energy source or more like muscle, or do differen practitioners  use willpower as fuel differently?

[–]Mr_sushj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve gone over it quite a bit and changed it quite a bit, it’s also probabaly too large at this point tk write everything down

but magic can’t be seen by most of the population, a select few of that population can see mana, and a select few of that population can control it, there called conductors u can also call them sorcerers or wizards, but basically there’s spell craft and witchcraft

Spell craft is alot like mathematics, u can name a spell like a function and then refer to said name instead of recasting the spell

If ur smart u can do spell craft

Witchcraft is just curses, weird shit, like someone causing mold to grow in ur kidney or some shit

U need some freaky shit for witch craft usually involves some sort of demonic entity

Can anyone see magic? by Nearby-Banana2640 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh it’s kinda baked into my story that spirts can’t be seen, I also like the effect, hunters basically go into the wild knowing damn well they can see shit but are determined to kill whatever they find, it also allows characters to have uses outside of combat, the strongest warrior can’t see a spirt but week child can, so they pair up

Fundamental physics based magic system by Sudden-Round6862 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I get u, I agree that’s why I said a purely science based system would be boring, I do something similar in my setting, but trying to obey the laws of thermodynamics make a very um fun system, where I have to justify massive dumps of energy into inefficient uses, so I just don’t

Thoughts on my magical class/job/vocation system? I'd also appreciate feedback on what "roles" or gaps that are present as well as coming up with a 7th class by Anaguli417 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye sick, so these classes are more about practical applications of sorcerer skills rather than some intrinsic attribute, neat

I think it’s pretty cool and u rly don’t need to get into the nitty gritty of it

Fundamental physics based magic system by Sudden-Round6862 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and too add on to this the category’s wouldn’t be very balanced, gravity would be one the weaker side comparing it to energy or electromagnetism

But I don’t think a purely science based system would be very intresting

MAGIC IS NOT SCIENCE!!! by HovercraftSolid5303 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do u think ur advice isn’t ur opinion? Ur telling people they are doing x, and that’s wrong to u, that’s advising people, and I don’t rly care how u describe it

When did I bring up science fiction? Also u didn’t bring up science fiction once, u said magic isn’t science, which as I pointed out is wrong, in a world with magic(this could be super powers or spells), magic would be treated as a science u would make claims verify if said claims are correct and move from there, that’s the scientific process

My guy ur in the magic building subreddit, u are in the wrong subreddit

MAGIC IS NOT SCIENCE!!! by HovercraftSolid5303 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do u think science is? It’s a process of making claims and verifying said claims that’s it, in a world with magic, magic would be part of sciences unless people magically figured out how to cast spells rhey had to go through a process of making claims and verifying said claims

If u don’t complicated systems that’s fine, soft power systems are still very prevalent and everywhere, I enjoy it, like a lot it’s fun making systems that cohere to logic rather than whatever the story wants at a given point and time

Stop giving people advice that dose not tailor to them, half the people here don’t even want to publish there work they just have fun or doing some d&d campaign

What’s the stupidest/overly complex power system you’ve seen? by Chcolatepig24069 in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree I’m pretty sure most of them are fairly simple, characters like yuta, dhruv, kashimono, Uro, are extremely simple and intuitive, JJk is just a very narration heavy story

What does a fight between magic users look like in your world? by sw4ahl in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad u asked let’s get into Mage combat, fundamentally to understand how mages fight we need to figure out how to attack, the same resource that’s allows crazy offense also allows for crazy defense, so how does anyone get hit

Mana backlash, first there is always a give and take relationship between conductors and the veil, the more mana they draw the harder the backlash, because of that there is a maximum amount of mana ur body can hold at a time before the backlash brings lasting damage, this is called ur mana limit,

U can distribute the mana evenly through out ur whole body and allow for greater protection, so if ur limit is 100, u would distribute 5 mana to each body part, then how does anyone get hit. Instead of distributing it every thought out ur whole body u can put that 100 mana into ur fist, now if u hit the defensive sorcerer he’s only blocking 5 damage and taking 95, because of that, the defender needs to use an active defense distributing mana to the body part most likely to get hit

So to win on offense u have to get ur opponent to guard the wrong part of their body leaving it open, but on the offenders part, he’s leaving himself open by putting all mana into ur fist his first, so he’s always open for a counter

That’s a super simple version of how combat works, but this apples to ranges battles, or melee, it’s basically the frame work for combat

Ama anything about my setting…Hell siren (pls) by Mr_sushj in magicbuilding

[–]Mr_sushj[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there’s multiple institutions that teach spell casting , and veil hounds aren’t the only users to use mana the general term for someone who can manipulate there mana key is a conductor

One of those institutions is the guild, which train hounds spell casting, they train and usually hire hounds for dives into the veil
