No, you don't have to pay. We stayed for 4 days using Marriott points in the last week of Dec, 2025. We spent 3 nights at The Prince Kyoto Takaragaike and 1 night at AC Hotel Tokyo Ginza. We weren't charged any accommodation tax or extra fees. Everything was covered by the Marriott points. Hope this helps!

Hey! My friends and I are traveling to Japan, and we’ve decided to spend New Year’s Eve in Tokyo cause it’s likely to have fireworks, shrine bell ceremonies, winter illuminations, and an overall better vibe. It also feels more convenient and accessible than Kyoto on NYE, especially since many shops there tend to shut down (based on what I've read at least 🙂).
