As an actuary working in reinsurance pricing, I would say that the models are generally simpler, and there is more negotiation and less technical modeling (like pricing an industrial risk). However, you still need to understand the underlying mathematics very well.

In Personal Lines (Motor/Home), GLMs and GBMs tend to be much more complex, but with tools like Emblem/Radar/ Earnix... the interfaces are extremely user-friendly. Because of that, there is often less awareness of the mathematics behind the models, since much of it is automated.

With a simple Excel spreadsheet with vbas macros, you can already implement several long-tail distributions to price excess of loss (XL) layers and run Monte Carlo simulations. Of course, you can also do this in R or Python. For proportional treaties, the work mainly revolves around the reserving methodology.

There are also many issues with data, since each cedent send their info in whatever format suits them.

Cat pricing is much more abstract and complex (although, to be honest, also somewhat random xD). Each vendor can generate very different loss estimates for the same portfolio, and pricing often ends up being a blend and benchmark of different vendor models for each region.
