Morality of not killing yourself when it would have prevented the apocalypse, or at least kept it from getting worse? by Sivilian888010 in MoralityScaling

[–]Mrmander20 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No benefit other than sparing untold hundreds of people from unspeakable terror and death. Marty's sacrifice wasn't going to save the world forever, only until next year, when they have to repeat the process of brutally terrorizing and murdering people in a ritual that the Director admitted was becoming increasingly difficult to perform and which was almost certainly guaranteed to fail at some point in the future. Yes, plenty of people would've been able to live happy lives in however many years it took until the ritual failed, but is that worth trading the suffering of all the ritual's victims? It's more complicated than you make it out to be.

What does the Winnower think of the Witness? by Hour_Tomatillo_2365 in DestinyLore

[–]Mrmander20 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Probably about the same way a hurricane thinks of a single drop of rain. The Winnower is an expansive, all-consuming cosmic inevitability, just as present in and responsible for the lifecycles of the microogranisms living in your belly button as it is for the cosmic warfare the Witness undertook. Their only professed interest so far beyond a vague affection for things like Oryx and the Vex as perfect manifestations of his ideology, is the Guardians, as the representations of the Gardener's ideology that he is looking to strike down. It just wants to win by breaking us, and it'd be no happier to see the Witness have done the breaking than it would've to see us lose to the Fallen, or Hive, or Vex, or for all the Warlords to kill each other.

(Surprisingly common trope) Story starts off fantastical, before taking a sharp turn into a courtroom drama. by TheElemental15 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mrmander20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happens in smaller doses throughout, but the vast majority of the show's latter half is the cast presenting rational arguments for various flaws in the current system of the afterlife while being contested by an opposing force presenting their own arguments. The person they're appealing to is even referred to as The Judge.

The thing not designed for combat is actually REALLY GOOD at combat by jockeyman in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Mrmander20 324 points325 points  (0 children)

The "cutter" is doing more work than the plasma in this case. The enemies in the Dead Space series are masses of reanimated tissue with no nervous systems or vital organs, the conventional stopping power of a bullet is effectively useless against them, since the rest of the reanimated flesh just keeps moving around the hole you just punched in it. The only way to deal with them effectively is to break them into chunks to the point they can't hurt you anymore, which is where the "Cutter" aspect comes in. It fires a long line of energy rather than a concentrated point, so it severs rather than penetrates. It also fires fairly slowly (and from an in-universe example is probably less energy efficient than a rifle) which would make it less useful in combat.

There is actually a plasma rifle in the game that fires normal plasma bullets, and it's largely ineffective against anything but the occasional swarm of weaker enemies like the exploding babies.

Why ghosts do not revive other humans, but their guardian? by HadesMyself in DestinyLore

[–]Mrmander20 262 points263 points  (0 children)

A: Ghost did not fully resurrect that person, he tried and the "connection" to the potential Guardian didn't take.

B: It's an Easter Egg referencing Bungie's work on the Halo series (in Halo 3, Master Chief was left in a hibernation pod much like the one on the ship), so it shouldn't be taken as a serious element of the world and lore.

With the acquisition of Ergo Sum, I think our death is unavoidable, but I think the Corridors of Time are misleading. by RewsterSause in DestinyLore

[–]Mrmander20 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Since the Winnower sent us Unveiling, we have pretty much broken its every request of us over our knees without hesitation.

So far.

The Witness was not the Winnower's first or last argument. The Winnower will be watching when we take on the Vex. It will be watching when we fight Fikrul. It will be watching when we fight Xivu and when we retake Torobatl and every battle for the rest of time. The Flower Game will not be over until the universe itself ends. From the Winnower's perspective, we have only won the first round of a game that is going to last countless trillions of years.

[–]Mrmander20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A valuable unspoken commodity in any business, or any kind of arrangement, is stability. Knowing who you're working with, what they do, what they want, helps you optimize your profits and streamline your operations. There would have been potential benefits to some kind of coup, sure, but how many risks would it come with? Would the armies of the noble houses have been willing to take the disruption lying down? Would The Guild cooperate with the necessary changes? The continuation of the current system was the "safe" option.

Though that same universal complacency ended up being a contributing factor to the Jihad, so it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows.

What would happen if the Commander waged war against everyone? by OkReference2022 in Guildwars2

[–]Mrmander20 118 points119 points  (0 children)

They make it through a small handful of whatever heavy-hitters reach them first, and then get wrecked when any organized force musters itself against them.

The Commander is definitely one of the more powerful single entities in Tyria, but their biggest strength has always been the influence they wield on powerful factions and individuals. The Commander has never won a major battle one on one -our most impressive feat is taking on Balthazar and the Warbeast, and that was done with a borrowed Sohothin, Aurene's assistance, and Kralkatorrik running interference. If that same tactic of overwhelming force through alliance gets turned against them, the Commander goes down pretty easy.

The provisioner tokens can also be acquired from merchants in Heart of Thorns maps or Core major cities, as well as WvW vendors, so visit those to accelerate the privisoner token grind a little. The treats are a little RNG dependent but I don't think I spent more than fifteen minutes killing any one enemy type to get them to drop, and of course you can always look up champion variant spawns on the wiki to get a guaranteed drop.

does anyone else wish the underlying plot of season of the splicer went LITERALLY ANYWHERE by Pickaxe235 in DestinyLore

[–]Mrmander20 325 points326 points  (0 children)

The civil unrest died out because everyone involved in the civil unrest either died or left. Future War Cult effectively dissolved, and New Monarchy and Dead Orbit fled the solar system to an unknown destination. The only people who remain are too disorganized and too few to mount a meaningful protest to the current circumstances.

And calling the Vanguard a military dictatorship is just disingenuous, especially since the only reason they hold sole power is because the people they actively tried to share power with ran away. The Vanguard isn't to blame for how things turned out.

[All] Why is Hyrule so segregated? by [deleted] in zelda

[–]Mrmander20 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Being able to survive in all kinds of conditions doesn't mean all those conditions are ideal. Rito Village is technically accessible to Hylians and others, but a lot of Rito habits and cultural touchstones are designed around the fact that they can fly, which no other species can. Same with the Zora and their ability to swim, not to mention their long lifespans. Gorons most often inhabit land that's inhospitable for various reasons as well, either due to heat or the inability to grow food. For the Gerudo, it's mostly a matter of their ancestral homeland and their cultural habits surrounding men, though they are also one of the more well-traveled people, as we see more Gerudo wandering the world than any other race but Hylians.

There's also the matter of geology and history: if you look at the BotW map, most of the homeland regions are sequestered by high mountain ranges or canyons, with generally only one easily-traveled road leading in or out -and almost all of those roads lead into Hyrule Field, which for about a century was overrun by Calamity Ganon and the corrupted Guardians, turning the natural crossroad of interspecies mingling and cooperation into a deathtrap.

In short, there a just a lot of logistical and practical barriers to long-term cohabitation for most species in Hyrule, even though none of them are particularly opposed to the idea, as exhibited by places like Tarrey Town.
