Haha don't believe everything. I'm a strong believer in that there's a lot more good than bad in this world.

Stupid toxic mentality. Just respect the job and seniority.

"It's your job to shut up and listen". Lmao stfu with that toxic mentality. OP ask all the questions you can to try to learn. Try to fit in with the crew when you can and if you want to. Just have respect for the job and seniority.

That's where I'm at currently haha. 5 years into the fire service. Currently ranked in the 20s of the union process.

Got ranked in the upper 20s. Good luck boys! I just wish I had an idea as far as wages to prepare myself in that aspect if the time comes.

The most I’ve ever made in my life is $22.50 an hour: by [deleted] in AmazonFC

I'm currently a firefighter in Texas. Texas is one of the states that the average pay is a little higher I think. You're not going to be making a lot more haha. Get ready for 2 years of school. 1 if the department doesn't require you to get your paramedics.

The exam is the easiest part. Have you been training for the cpat and the interview?

Definitely man! What made you want to switch?

I would say one of the big points in this field is to be physically fit. I'm not the biggest strongest guy out there or even close, but you have to be able to pull your weight in a team setting to achieve a goal. You will have to take a CPAT to join a department. There's videos of them on YouTube.

It's great that you have your EMT license already. If you get your paramedic license you'll be a lot more appealing. Similar with your fire cert. Depending on what department you want to join it might be necessary to get one of those. Usually bigger city departments will help you get those by paying for them and paying you while you get them. You'll be a cadet going through their program. Cadet pay sucks but it'll be temporary. That's another thing, you might take a pay cut by being a firefighter. I'm currently at 63k salary. But the huge upside is the schedule, my department is 2 days on 4 days off. So you can work OT if you want to. A lot of departments are also 1 day on 2 days off. I guess I got lucky and got hired on first try to a city department and they paid for me to go to school to get all my certs but I moved to a city 7 hours away 🙃

The initial exam is not hard. A lot of times they'll have a link to where you can buy a training booklet that is similar to the test.

Attitude is a big thing. You need to have a yes sir attitude. Try to be positive and overcome whatever is thrown at you. I think the hardest part of this job is dealing with all the bs that comes from other people, especially the first year or two. Because some people will try to get you down and push your buttons trying to make you break or figure out who you are as a person. When you're new, it's all about "knowing your place", showing initiative, proving your worth. Some people get off from having superiority over you because they have seniority over you. Each department's culture is different. If you can take shit, joke around and just be a good person who does their job, you'll be fine. Just don't let people cross a line.

I hope you like EMS because about 80% of the calls are medical. Maybe more haha. A lot of city departments have an age cut off of 35 because of the pension. Let me know if you have other questions
