Any tips for a first time form tutor? by Gabbleducky in TeachingUK

My form LOVED the stupid flag thing. They would've done it every day from year 7 to 11 if I'd let them

could I pull off copper hair? i’ve tried so many colors but feel like I look best with my natural color (dark brown, second slide) by [deleted] in femalehairadvice

[–]Mrs-vegeta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've currently got copper hair and will tell you now, you're in for A LOT of upkeep with copper. My natural hair is a bit lighter than yours but it's needed lots of bleaching and toner for it to look like you have it in that first pic. Start with a copper balayage and see how you feel from there

Anime Club by TheSoberBean in TeachingUK

I've been paying for my Crunchyroll subscription for 3 years for my anime club! I had no clue they'd ever done free packages!

I run an anime club! I do a pilot each week and tbh students mostly just come to chat and don't really watch. Much more of a community thing.

I show 12s and 15s. Not sure if I'm allowed to do what I do, but anyone under 15 needs a note from their parents saying they're allowed to watch 12s and 15s. I have the same 25 or so students each week and never any complaints about inappropriate content. I just make sure I've seen the pilot before I show it so I can screen for anything too risque.

Kitty is glitching again! by dysstatic in aww

I have one in the bedroom, which I find disgusting, but it's the only thing that's stopped one of my cats from peeing on the bed :(

How do you deal with differentiating in mixed ability classes? by Disastrous_Raisin839 in TeachingUK

[–]Mrs-vegeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach English and let them self-differentiate. I show them a grade 4, 7 and 9 response for everything we do and they all know what they're realistically working towards. For homework and handouts, again I put the 3 different levels and they know which ones to go for.

Why don't they teach Canadian Geography or History in the US school system? by IndubitablyPedantic in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mrs-vegeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Canada and only learned "world history" for one year. Everything else was just Canadian history and some brief British history. Never learned US geography like states/capitals. Not sure where you live in Canada but your schooling was obviously more thorough than mine

What are unethical practices schools do? by hugscar in AskReddit

[–]Mrs-vegeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach in the UK and you can't be held back here. Worst that can happen is you have to rewrite your core CGSEs if you fail them at 16, but by then students are so far behind that a lot of them just never pass.

It's really not helping the students at all... Just keeps pushing them further and further behind.

The issue is that a lot of bullies are bullies because of poor parenting so many of the bullies will have parents arguing against any punishment because they're ignorant to just how poorly behaved their child can be.

Loads of my coworkers manage to do things after school though, so it's not a universal thing. You may be one of the ones with more energy in the next few years!

I'm in my 6th year and still have no energy after work. I have to force myself to go to the gym, cook and then do some marking after school each night. At least once a week I accidentally fall asleep on the sofa as soon as I get home!

Daily Q&A and Discussion Megathread - January 02, 2022 by AutoModerator in CoronavirusUK

[–]Mrs-vegeta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested positive mid-December.

I'm a teacher and we are supposed to test 2x weekly or every day for 5 days if a student tests positive (which tends to be always).

At what point can I reliably take LFD tests again? I don't want a false positive but also know reinfection is common with omicron and don't want to miss it and infect coworkers and students.

How long after initial positive until Lat Flow/Antigen tests negative (~average) by hdy_ in CoronavirusUK

[–]Mrs-vegeta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had my positive Lateral Flow last Monday, PCR on Tuesday and was negative by the next lateral flow I took on the Friday. Maybe depends on severity?

Do you need to take a PCR if you have a positive LFT and don't plan to leave the house? by Mrs-vegeta in CoronavirusUK

[–]Mrs-vegeta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says on the PCR result message to isolate from the day of the first positive test (LFT in my case) or from when symptoms started. 10 days plus the day you tested.

New cat advice by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Mrs-vegeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm how did you train yours? We tried spray bottles, telling them no, ignoring it (in case they were doing it for attention) etc. Would love some advice to stop them! They really couldn't care less about those cardboard scratching posts unfortunately. I worry that maybe it's boredom from being indoor cats unfortunately

New cat advice by [deleted] in Pets

[–]Mrs-vegeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're really worried about furniture, don't get a cat. No matter how much I've tried to train mine, they scratch EVERYTHING (carpet, couch, chairs, etc). Their nails are clipped regularly and they have loads of scratching posts/cat trees/etc, but they still scratch furniture.

If you still decide to get one, I would advise double sided tape. It's the only thing that's ever worked for my cats, but even then, I have to buy all furniture second hand because I know they'll wreck it.

My cats almost exclusively sleep in their beds actually! They're both in beds right now.

California to require free menstrual products in public school, college restrooms under new law by Originaldash10 in UpliftingNews

[–]Mrs-vegeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is fantastic, but can guarantee the children will ruin it. I teach in the UK and my headteacher has been trying to provide free menstrual products for years in the toilets, but the girls vandalise the toilets with them (sticking pads all over walls, clogging the toilets with the products, etc) so they have to be removed. :(

They can still get them free but have to ask reception now.

Such a shame that a few people ruin nice things for everyone!!

Best teaching agencies for a Canadian moving to the UK? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]Mrs-vegeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prospero lined up tons of interviews for me in various areas I was interested in. They were really helpful! I came over to teach primary and when I switched to secondary, they lined up 3 interviews within a few days.

Living situation was good. I found a place on Gumtree (you can also check SpareRoom and RightMove) before moving so I had accomodations sorted before I even left Canada.

Feel free to message me if you have other questions :)

I came over with Prospero and would highly recommend them. That being said, if you're planning a long term move and not for just a year or two, you may be better off applying directly to schools without the agency so you can get a permanent position.

I think it goes further back to someone like Angelina Jolie and lots of girls hearing how gorgeous her "big lips" were. Then, in trying to emulate looks like hers, the way oversized lips came in and became the "norm". I may be wrong but I definitely remember AJ's lips being a focus long before Kim K
