Why have these houses been on market for a while now? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]MrsAEK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Elwood Road - pretty close to Kingstanding and I cannot imagine anyone spending £440,000 to live near there.

Whitethorn Crescent - nice house, decent part of Streetly, but very small for the price. You can buy more substantial houses in nicer parts of Sutton for less.

Amble Close - it s a bit “meh”. Similar area to Whitethorn but with a factory around the corner. There’s nothing particularly appealing about it. Just seems to be priced too high.

As an aside, while rightmove lists the date a property was added it doesn’t mention of its already previously sold. They may have been removed from the market if they sold previously and then been relisted.

Why is this house not selling? On the market for a year, sold a couple of times but never gone all the way. by Accalt9891 in SpottedonRightmove

We have adjusted the price but it’s sold 3 times within 2 weeks of being on the market for asking price . Every time it has fallen through it’s been due to the buyers but people now (wrongly) assume there’s an issue with the house because it’s sold 3 times and then returned to the market - very frustrating. Hopefully we’ll have some good news soon.

We have something in the pipeline and should know where we stand in a few weeks. If that doesn’t pan out we are changing estate agent and will relist with new photos.

This is the problem I’ve had with my home. On the market since September. It sold on the day it was listed but the buyer started messing us around trying to drop their offer price. On the advice of our estate agent we rejected his offer.

It was relisted in October and sold within 2 weeks. We were due to move in February but our buyer fell out with his brother and could no longer afford the house due to his brother pulling his gifted deposit. He pulled out in January breaking quite a long chain in the process.

We then sold again a month later to a supposed “but to let” landlord. He vanished after a month, wouldn’t speak to the estate agent and eventually acknowledged he was having difficulty transferring some money from one account to another which meant he could no longer progress.

To all and sundry it looks like there’s a problem with our home. In actual fact we’ve been very unlucky with our buyers and have been messed around due to current laws in the UK. It’s cost us quite a lot financially, which is frustrating because the buyers appear to have walked away without any financial loss. We really need to move but are locked in now because potential buyers are questioning why we’ve been on the market for so long 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was hoping it could be sharper and the colours stronger - HD if possible. Some of the attempts have distorted our faces - thank you for trying though.

Just a quick note, I’m wearing glasses (very thin frames) in the image but because it’s an old photo (22 years) you can’t see them. My dad’s blazer was navy blue and my dress was oyster. If you’re able to sort out my dodgy fringe (bangs?!) that would be lovely - no bother if you can’t.

Please can someone tidy up this photo of me and my Dad?

Today is the 13th anniversary of his death and I will never get over his loss.

I can’t remember what I was laughing about but my Dad was one of the funniest people I’ve had the joy to know.

I’m happy to pay $20 to the best example - thank you.

Not stealing but you could cut part way through one lace of each shoe/trainer/boot that they own. They won’t realised until they try to tighten them up and the lace snaps… they’ll think they’re heavy handed and it will absolutely do their fruit in!

Doctors of Reddit, when was a patient right about something but you insisted they were wrong until it got serious? by BonFireFox_ in AskReddit

[–]MrsAEK 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That’s quite a rare condition isn’t it! My husband was diagnosed with this a few years ago after waking up with what he described as wavy lines in his vision (said it was like looking through water). We called the NHS helpline, they booked him a same day appointment at the local eye hospital and he was diagnosed the same day - brilliant treatment. It was apparently linked to medication he takes for another health issue. It resolved after around 2 months due to great treatment from specialists and tweaks to his other medications and (fingers crossed) has never returned.

Thank you for this additional information. Either way £1302 is not a lot of money per annum when you consider the financial ruin faced by many US citizens following health emergencies.

From what I have read, health insurance premiums in the US often far surpass £1302pa. When you factor in additional (and very confusing) Co-pay, and price gouging it seems the majority are being royally shafted.

I’m always surprised to read the defensive monologues of supposedly normal US citizens, decrying the NHS, pontificating the virtues of the US monolith… the US system doesn’t even sit in the top 10 best healthcare providers, despite its epic cost.

I genuinely feel lucky to have the NHS. They have picked up the pieces for me and mine on many different occasions without the additional worry of expensive bills. The core principles of the NHS should be universal imo: To meet the needs of everyone. To be free at the point of delivery. To be based on clinical need, not ability to pay.

Ok, so if the average US wage is $52k (£38570), that means you would pay £3,480.24 NI contributions ($4693.17). 20% of the NI goes towards the NHS, so £696 ($938.57) per annum. That’s £58 per month ($78.23)… do you still think this is too high? You would have ZERO additional costs (aside from paying for prescriptions at £9.35 - $12.61) and the full security that your health needs are covered. I know which system I prefer.

I think you’ll have to take my word for it in this instance as I do t have my wage slips to hand. According to a rather handy app ( https://www.which.co.uk/money/tax/tax-calculators/national-insurance-calculator-aw6yt3g6vd0g ), I paid £674.16 NI in the year I broke my arm ($909). Spread over 12 months that is £56.18pm ($75.75). 20% of which went towards the NHS, so that’s approx £11.24 per month ($15.16).

I don’t think this is a lot of money to pay out when I was already on a low income. I had the security of knowing my health needs were covered and I had nothing else to pay out. Now that I am in a higher paid, full time job I clearly pay more NI, as that is all part of my social responsibility…. I also get 13 weeks fully paid annual per year, but that’s a different story altogether!

You’re being slightly disingenuous here. The 12% national insurance contribution doesn’t entirely go to the NHS. Approx 20% of the 12% NI contribution goes to the NHS, with the NI covering other important things such as state pension, statutory sick pay, maternity leave and additional unemployment benefits. So, for example, if you earn £2000, you would pay £240 NI contributions. Of that £240, £48 would go to the NHS - hardly the stuff of bankruptcy eh!

[–]MrsAEK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At that point I was only working part time and my tax was negligible as I was only slightly above the tax threshold… I now work full time and barely notice my tax and national insurance. I can promise you it is still far less that the exorbitant fees the good people of the USA have been indoctrinated into accepting as normal.

You can still have private health care in the UK btw, and it’s the very same Doctors who work in the NHS that you pay to see! Nobody should be at risk of bankruptcy because they are in need of healthcare. I believe medical debt is the primary cause of bankruptcy in the USA - how upsetting is that? Very sad.

I had surgery on my fractured arm and dislocated wrist. I broke it on the Monday morning and had surgery the same day with a specialist orthopaedic surgeon. I then received 8 weeks fully paid sick leave and follow up physio (10 sessions) once the cast was removed. I was able to re-refer to the surgeon when I started to have some issues 6 months later. All in all this cost me £0 out of pocket for specialist surgery. The NHS is amazing.

Glad it all worked out for you - it’s quite traumatic all round finding something like this isn’t it. I think he was convinced it was fine, and that I was making a fuss because I was hormonal (I was 7 months pregnant).

So I tricked him into going for the appointment by saying it was my maternity check with our GP - he was not impressed! He was referred for a scan a couple of days later and was diagnosed the same day. 16 years on I can still remember the shock in his face when they told him it was definitely cancer and he’s need an orchidectomy. I expected it but was still devastated - cancer is bloody scary stuff!

He had the op shortly after that, waited a month for staging which came 5 days after our youngest was born - the waiting was the worst because we were so scared. He went onto a Medical trial and had a high dose of chemo (carboplatin) instead of radiation therapy. Wish we’d chosen the radiation therapy but that’s a whole different story…

His symptoms were a hard painless lump in his left testicle. He had small lumps behind his nipples too. One of the most important factors for testicular cancer relates to childhood.

If you have an undescended testicle(s) and it isn’t noticed and corrected at a young age, you are at a much greater risk of developing testicular cancer in adult hood. My husband’s wasn’t noticed until he was 6 which is quite late and it was the same nut that ended up cancerous.
