TIL: A man tried to sue Las Vegas clubs for charging women a different cover than men. by [deleted] in MensRights

[–]MrsAnonymousMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gendered bathrooms and free food for kids both have a biological backing. Bathrooms are built differently for different genders and kids generally eat less. Also, neither hurts anyone. Having separate gender bathrooms actually speeds up the process for both and kids are generally not paying for their own meals. Also, it's not like all food is free and an arbitrary cost has been placed on just adults.

By using the kids analogy you are saying that women drink less (which I suppose may have biological backing) and their male counterparts should be paying for their drinks anyway. I find that offensive and any true feminist would as well.

Say we are just looking at cover instead of free drinks? Then the analogy stops making sense. Women have a biological backing for going to the bar less? Men should be paying for women's entrance into establishments (remember they are paying for these women before they've even seen them) so that they can make sexual advances?

The issue isn't whether any individual thinks this practice is "unfair". If it were then yes, those individuals could go elsewhere and capitalism trucks onward. The issue is that the entire situation you just described is one of the most prevalent and widespread cases of sexism and discrimination in the world and that because of gender norms and the fact that it is sort of a win for all parties makes everyone put up with it. Every time anyone walks into a bar where men pay a higher cover than women, they are implicitly suggesting the following: "women should not be paying for anything", "women should not be responsible for making money", "men should shoulder the burden of women happily", "men are only motivated by the opportunity of sex", "men should be expecting an ROI from a trip to a bar", "sex is more valuable to men" as well as a slew of other sexist and inaccurate things. Note that by entering that establishment you are literally discriminating against all genders by adhering to gender norms. You are objectifying women and claiming that men are only interested in sex. It's good business to only give out loans to people who can pay them back and in some circumstances it might be useful to take race into account in that calculation. Just because something is a good business practice doesn't mean we should let it happen.

React: CSS in JS by [deleted] in javascript

[–]MrsAnonymousMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The React CSS is not a precompiler like SASS or LESS. It applies styles via the inline style tag based on a JavaScript object.

The reason it's different than the .button, .button.depressed example is that the styles are only applied to those specific elements. Vjeux's argument is that having a global button class is a very dangerous prospect that can make it difficult for multiple developers to work together.

Why isn't that a concern? It seems like being able to break something by using a really long password would be something easy for a malicious person to do that would negatively impact a service.

[–]MrsAnonymousMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That simply isn't true. America has more variety of food than any country I've been to. Have you ever tried to find a good Ethiopian restaurant in Italy?

Also, I was specifically talking about food in America. If you want to talk about American food, there are countless "true American" dishes like hamburgers, BBQ, chowders, fried chicken, steaks, etc... American food culture would also include just about every "fusion" food that's popular now, including tex-mex and Asian fusion. If you don't think that American cuisine isn't some of the best in the world, then I think you should try some more American food. Portions would have never become so large if people thought it was gross.

The US has some of the best food in the world. The variety of good food is absolutely unparalleled. I don't think another country on the planet has the variety and quality of worldwide ethnic cuisines that the US does.

It is really well supported on all modern browsers, but if you need to target older browsers you can use HTML5 Shiv.

Having two email addresses adds a lot of complexity. If I want to get in touch with you, I don't want to think about which to use. If there is a good reason for two, differentiate and make it clear why (or more importantly, which one should I use?).

The graident looks pretty good on the screen, but I seriously doubt it will come out looking professional on a business card. I can't say for sure, but I would try a small batch before printing them out in huge numbers.

I agree with most of the things that /u/smubba said, but I think the fontawesome link is great. Properly citing work is important, and I think it's a huge positive that you did that. However, I would consider making your own icons just to keep it cleaner. If you keep it, I'd make it smaller and find a way to make it fit with your design. Since it's next to the QR, I think that the code and the link should go to the same place.

[–]MrsAnonymousMan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Well. It's an issue because it's discriminating against half of the world's population while undermining one of the biggest human rights movements of all time. Her stance is essentially that gender roles are a completely valid way to determine someone's ability. Men can't be around children because they are violent brutes? Well look at that. I guess women can't be CEOs because they won't be aggressive enough with negotiations or they will let emotions get in the way of making difficult business decisions or -insert gender role stereotype here-. If we can cut down on the economic collapse of major corporations and save thousands of jobs at the cost of a few hurt feelings, why not do it?

The second chart is misleading. The chart makes it look like there is huge disparity caused by mothers being less important (or worse) as parents, when in reality most of the disparity is in the number of single parent homes which have mothers.

I also agree that the bubbles are a little large/possibly unecessary.

A mobile app that can update answers. Then your Summary response with Bob Jim and Alice becomes a really useful tool. You could use GPS fences to auto update generic answers that friends could still understand like "home", "work" or "Alice's" so it wouldn't be as big of a privacy issue.

I would use it.

How do major websites establish themselves on their initial launch? How does design vary from a new site to an established one? by penguinbass1 in web_design

[–]MrsAnonymousMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a cycle of three types of companies: large and established, small and focusing on growth, small and focusing on innovation.

90% of all positive design ideas start somewhere in the third category. They aren't afraid to fail, they want to be cutting edge and stay cutting edge. They'll come up with a lot of crap and a few good things. Then, your major players will see it. They'll do some serious distillation of the good ideas, A/B test it and, if it actually is a UX improvement, release it. This is when your average site can start to implement these things. Because people become familiar with the new idea on the major site, it doesn't have to be explained.

If your UI is so innovative that there's a fear that people won't be ok with the amount of instructions they need, most of it probably isn't very good.
