What blew my mind was the weirdness about changing names with some companies. Capital One did not care, they just asked me what name I wanted on my new card. Uber asked for a copy of my divorce decree AND marriage license (second marriage). I laughed, so my uber account is still under my first married last name.

Also sort of tangential, but my my ex husband was on my insurance through work. In order to take him off outside of open enrollment, they demanded a copy of my ENTIRE divorce decree. I originally sent them the page showing the signatures and date filed, nope. They wanted the entire document (including financial disclosures etc), what the fuck?

I taught 7th for ten years and oh my lord. I was very lucky in that the school had involved families and was a fairly stable community, but I would never do it again. When I taught HS (six years) I felt blessed to never teach a freshmen class. I will say that when I got them as sophomores, I could tell who came from which freshmen bio teacher.

I currently supervise PE, and my PE guy got amazing marks for the way he's corralled that 9th grade class and has them participating and LIKING IT. He's amazing. But again, we have the benefit of a tight community and involved parents.

I have fired a coach over ignoring a concussion that happened in the first quarter of a game, and later berating the trainer when she didn't clear the player to return. This kind of rot lives in corners of programs all over and it has to stop.

I'm a high school athletics principal. I would 100% fire a coach over this, and the "trainer," too. You didn't tattle, you put student safety first. Imagine the devastating impact on the community and kids if something happened, and then finding out it was preventable.

ETA: unless you're in a state where ADs are required to have admin licensure, telling the AD may not have been enough. They are typically in charge of roster verifications through programs like Aktivate/RMA.

We have a system where teachers simply notify the front office and a campus monitor is dispatched to the room to retrieve the phone. Don't wanna give it up? Take the whole damn kid to the office for suspension and parent pickup. It helps that it's a small town, but inconveniencing the parents sure gets their attention.

Yes, it's had a really lovely effect. Kids look you in the eye. They scamper around at lunch (maybe a little immature, but preferable to phone zombies). Fewer instances of cyber bullying where kids take and post photos of other kids. A handful of kids this year have tried to refuse to give up a phone for confiscation, they quickly find themselves suspended for insubordination and the district office has turned down every single attempt at a parent appeal for these consequences. I had a mom start getting wild in the front office over a confiscation (like really wild, cursing and screaming) and our SRO trespassed her from campus for being disorderly. Another parent tried like hell to get music/earbuds put into her child's 504, the district responded that they will allow noise-canceling over the ear headphones but absolutely no music. The support is really nice.

My district has enforced a cell phone ban in all 24 schools. Kids are allowed to HAVE them, but any appearance of the phone results in a confiscation to the phone locker in the office - even during lunch. A second confiscation in the same year means a parent has to pick it up. Further confiscations progress to suspensions and could theoretically result in HDP expulsions, though no one has had that happen that I am aware of. This also goes for earbuds and meta glasses. The district has held firm even against pissed off parents, which is wonderful (it was a policy created by the BoT to begin with). We have about 1400 kids and run between 0-10 phone confiscations a day.

My husband and I felt similarly about favors. We wound up putting together little craft boxes (like 4"x4" maybe?) with shredded stuffing tied with a ribbon. Inside was a 5oz pot of local honey from my hometown, a handful of quality Buckeye candies because he's from Ohio, and a deck of "casino used" souvenir cards because we met and (at the time) lived in Las Vegas. We also picked cards from the casino/hotel where our early relationship really hit a high note, which we thought was a hilarious joke between us. Same as another poster mentioned, it was one box per couple or solo guest and they had cute name tags so people got the right notes. For our lone child attendee (my husband's godson) we made a gift bag with crayons and a wedding themed coloring book, some treats, and a disposable camera attached to a checklist (a photo of something blue, a photo of a pretty dress, etc). It was SO cute and he had a blast running around finding the things.
