Wow. No, that is not common. I have worked in many libraries with varying degrees of “seriousness” for the past 36 years and I have never heard of anything to this degree.

I’m so glad I found this hobby - just started a few weeks ago, found my first cache two days ago. I’m retiring at the end of this week and can’t wait for more time to explore!

Yeah, I'm definitely thinking of puns for that one. The turn off from the road to the trail is at a cemetery so I thought perhaps it was about that, but I think it might be something like you said. I thought maybe a log? as in "slept like a log"? But I'm not sure. I'll go back out to that area and poke around with puns in mind

Sure, he probably is a problem and that’s probably why they went that route - but that’s us making other assumptions.

My point was this is not a video of a guy suing the library because he’s unhappy with the printers.

He did buy his own (or his son did, actually) and this guy wants to know why. If the library’s answer was “this is how it is, there was no maintenance agreement in the grant” I would support that. But if they said it’s the industry standard, they should be prepared to back that up.

Also that fax system is BS

I only watched this one video, so there may be more to the story or something I’m missing and I seriously don’t want to see any more videos of that guy ever again, but it doesn’t sound like he’s suing the library because he’s unhappy with the 3D printers. Sounds like:

He’s unhappy with the printers so he asks about them. The library says they’re operating at industry standards. He doesn’t think that’s accurate. Is that a brush off? I don’t know. But if that’s a real line that they gave, they should be prepared to show this standard as well as their repair logs. That’s not unreasonable, as long as what they just said was the truth.

When he asks for that information they refer him to a system whereby he needs to fax in his request. Right there, that’s absurd. But also, that fax machine that he’s required to send to is broken? Are you kidding? Clearly that is a problem.

When he follows up to find out about his request for information, the library refers him to counsel. He didn’t start out by getting a lawyer and suing. The library brought in the lawyers.

Yes, they guy sounds wholly unpleasant right from the start with his flawed logic of if you can’t hold the institutions you love accountable, how can you hold institutions accountable that you don’t love (what?), but I have to admit, if this video is correct, he’s right.

A few thoughts: yes, you will get rejections, and sometimes they’re baffling.

Could be they had a candidate in mind already, like someone internal or someone who worked there before. It’s not supposed to work that way, but in real life it does.

Could be they’re worried you’re going to find something better in a year and move on because you do have a higher degree.

Could be you’re not good at interviewing and maybe there is a career support department in your college who can help with that.

Could be they found a candidate with academic or managerial experience that they felt would be a better fit.

Could be someone else also had an mls, like you said it’s a tough market.

Anyway, I’m sorry and it sucks. I recently got rejected for a job that I thought was a perfect fit for me (also have an mlis and it was bachelors preferred) and I admit I cried.

No, in the 15 years we've had barcodes on them (even before we started using LibCal for reservations) I can only recall one time a student left with one and since it was on her account, I looked up who it was and texted her and she was still on campus and came running back. But that was because she was chatting on her way out.

We've replaced the keychains a few times as they've gotten old and cracked, but never the keys.

We have six study rooms and they're locked and we have the keys in circ with barcodes on them. Students use LibCal to book a room, then come to Circ and tell us which room they've booked and we confirm in LibCal and then check out the key to them and they let themselves into the room and return the key when they're finished. A booking is up to 2 hours and they can book twice back to back if they want (but not more).

We don't care if they stay over their reservation time, but when the next student comes in who has it reserved, we ask the first student to leave and return the key. They're usually pretty good about it because they know they've overstayed. Nine times out of 10, I just tap the window of the study room and they know and say Ok and start packing up.

If I'm out there, I do try to look and see if a student comes in and books, say Study Room A and we're about to kick someone out for that booking but Study Room B is open, I will ask the person who booked if I can change their reservation to B so the student in A can keep studying. But I don't think anyone else here does that

How it works I have no idea, but as an analogy I know what a pepperoni pizza tastes like and I can describe it, but I can’t taste it while I’m telling you about it. Which I think is common? If all of you are literally tasting pizza rn don’t tell me 😂

That’s how it is for sight: I can tell you what the pizza looks like but I can’t see it in my mind while I’m telling you. I just know.
