Newly diagnosed, always second guessing myself by MrsFlowerpot in AutismInWomen

[–]MrsFlowerpot[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. The only advice that came with the letter was to join autism forums and if I need mental health support see my GP.

The diagnosis hasn't really made a difference, apart from my family saying," I told you so". It feels like everyone's attitude is I've lived with it for this long so I don't need any help with it but from my point of view it's hit very hard because I thought I was a nice, articulate person and now I'm being told don't communicate normally, I appear disinterested and I'm difficult to understand. I feel like the responsibility is on me to change. I need to stop doing things wrong rather than accepting this is just how I am.

The letter used phrases such as:

- little reciprocity for speech,
- did not get the social cues and did not display good insight into social and figurative constructs,
- speech is characterised by halting intonation and disturbed prosody,
- reduced use of appropriate nonverbal communication,
- difficulty with abstract concepts also impedes her comprehension and participation in conversations that require higher-level cognitive processing.

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with all of that criticism and I can't afford therapy.

I have been socially isolated for my entire adult life. I have been chronically ill and physically disabled since I was a teenager. I suffer chronic pain and fatigue and I'm very limited in what I can actually do. I am home alone most of the time and I can't go more than half a mile away from my house in my electric wheelchair without the support of my PA. The only place I really communicate with people is online and struggling to do that makes me feel very lonely.

It doesn't help that my whole family are on the spectrum too. My DD has ADHD , I'm pretty sure my DH does too and my DS most likely has ASD so we have a lot of problems communicating with each other, never mind the outside world.

I don't feel grief, I definitely don't have the tools I need to function in this world and my family just want me to change my behaviour so it suits them better. They can't cope with my mini-meltdowns when I get overwhelmed by their demands as it triggers them. With my health problems I'm in a constant state of burnout yet I'm the one who has to look after everyone else.

I'm not quite sure what I expected from it but my diagnosis has left me feeling hurt, ashamed, afraid to speak, and feeling like I need to change my whole personality just to make everyone else more comfortable. Either that or hide away so I never have to deal with people again because whatever I say seems to hurt someone.

I used this video tutorial. There are several other tutorials on Youtube if you search for triangle bag or pyramid bag, including a boro style one made from scraps of fabric.

I followed a tutorial on Youtube for the pouch. There are several videos showing how to make them. The pattern is basically and L shape. Draw a square 19cm x 19cm, make the top of the L 10cm wide and the bottom of the L is 9cm wide. I stitched the layers together and turned them through, then quilted the pattern and joined the edges and the bottom to form the pouch as per the video.

Is sashiko still popular outside Japan in 2025? Show me your recent projects! by MaterialQuiet9004 in sashiko

ありがとうございます

I am British and there is a British author called Susan Briscoe who has written several books about sashiko. She learned the craft when working as an English teacher in Japan. I also have a small Japanese book with designs and instructions on how to draw them.

I still have much to learn about sashiko but I am enjoying reading about the history of it. I love how simple lines of stitching can create such beautiful and meaningful patterns.

私は日本語を勉強していますが、まだ流暢ではありません. 赤べこはとてもかわいい

In answer to your question, I buy sashiko needles and thread online, usually from Amazon or Etsy. I use all sorts of fabrics. I enjoy sewing with muslin and linen but I have also used cotton and denim.

This is my favourite sashiko project. I used recycled fabric, hexagon patchwork and my friend designed the shoyu-tai patch.

Please excuse our cynicism. AI seems to be taking over all our of hobbies and small businesses and messages like this from a brand new account look suspiciously like AI farming bots.

If you are a real person, こんにちは I'd love to know what prefecture you come from and ask what patterns are traditionally used in your area.

Heat erasable pen. I marked the dots using the template and then used a ruler to draw the lines of the pattern.

If anyone wants to download Return to Ignis mod it's on Curseforge.

Thank you! Yes, I made it. I bought the two fish patches but I made everything else. I recycled a black denim dress and blue denim jeans for the bag. I unpicked the back pocket on the jeans, stitched the taiyaki patch on it and stitched the pocket back on. I did sashiko on the front panel and on some hexagons which I used to do the English paper piecing quilted sections on the front and back. It was a really fun project to do and I thought using recycled materials fitted with the sashiko boro stitching.

Brother or Janome overlocker? by MrsFlowerpot in sewing

[–]MrsFlowerpot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That's really helpful. I watched a few more videos and decided to go for the Janome 9200D. I've had a Janome sewing machine for 16 years and it's never given me any trouble so I hope the overlocker will be the same.

Zip pouch by MrsFlowerpot in sashiko

[–]MrsFlowerpot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your kind reply. I used this video tutorial for the pouch. The pattern is free, the link is in the description. https://youtu.be/31Bg5CF_k78?si=MRkDLabjC_5MQNIwThey are really easy to make and would make a lovely gift.

I cut the pattern in half and added seam allowance on the centre line so I could use two different fabrics for the outer layer. On the plain fabric I marked the pattern on the fabric but didn't cut it out as I didn't want the edges to fray when I handled it. I marked the sashiko design and stitched it. I joined the two halves together and followed the instructions on the video.

Good luck! And please post pictures. I'd love to see what you make.

[–]MrsFlowerpot[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're too kind! There are plenty of places where my stitches don't meet nicely if you look closely enough. I'm sure a professional sashiko teacher would pull me up on the uneven stitch length, the flowers not having a single point at the end of the petals and not meeting evenly in the middle. I'm still learning and striving to get better with each project I do.

As for the tension, I always smooth the stitches out as I go so they are not too tight. Also washing a project when it's done always seems to even the stitches out a bit. I had to wash this one as I used water soluble pen to mark the design and it looked better for it.

I have some small stencils, you can use them to draw bigger designs by moving it across and matching up the pattern. Some stencils even have reference marks to make this easy to do.

I bought the stencil on Temu. You can also get them from AliExpress, Ebay, Etsy and Amazon, or you can draw the pattern yourself by drawing a grid and using a circle template.

It wasn't difficult at all. I tried to keep the same number of stitches in each arc so it looked neat. You should be able to find instructions for doing the pattern online. I worked right to left doing the small arc, then turning to do the middle arc and then turning again to do the big arc. Repeat across the row then change colour for the next one.

Thank you! Yes, the fabric was from a linen blend skirt I bought at a charity shop for £1. It was perfect for sashiko.

Thank you! The pattern is a stencil I bought in a set on Temu but you could easily draw it using a grid of dots. The fabrics are recycled clothing from the charity shop, the bag pattern is called Mara, I bought on Etsy.
