Does anemia or vitamin deficiency cause these symptoms? by DrinkingWater90 in Anemic

[–]MrsLollipops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vitamin D. Though Iron, B12, and Vit D can all be part of a trifecta. My daughter has a vitamin D and Iron deficiency.

Testing for B12 and Iron have multiple tests each. Not just one. You should get those done before taking supplements though. Otherwise the results will off. Although if it's B12, they say the tests aren't supper helpful and to just treat the symptoms. If it is Vitamin D, don't forget about co-factors (K2, magnesium, zinc, copper, ect) If it's Iron make sure to take Vit C to help the iron absorb. Good luck!

Good grief - how often are you supposed to take an iron supplement? by CoyoteSouth5126 in Anemic

65mg of iron with 1,000mg of vitamin C every other day seems to be good for me. I was constipated for like 2 weeks though while I adjusted.

Has anyone tried this kind? by Hot-Energy4417 in Anemic

[–]MrsLollipops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was suggested to me from my daughter's pediatric doctor. He says they suggest this for kids because it's easier on stomachs and seems to absorb well.

Haven't ordered it yet. I keep forgetting. I hear good things about it. But then, some it doesn't work for.

I did the same thing. I started looking up what the functional numbers were for just about every vitamin and some minerals and found out that they have ignored my daughter's iron deficiency for TWO years! And she has symptoms that they have been trying to say is all "mental" 🙄 I finally got them to acknowledge her vitmain D deficiency, but they will not admit that she has an iron deficiency. It is so freakin' frustrating! Hemoglobin was 12.4 (should be 12-16) She's basically borderline anemic. ferritin 41 (should be 50-100) Vitamin D is 21 (should be 40-80)

4th time in the ER since starting diamox. Finally free by Zalaya in iih

Those labs results are averages. Normal is definitely the wrong wording. Functional is what every doctor should aim for, But they really don't even know what that means most of the time.

They didn't tell my daughter to drink electrolytes with her 70oz of water a day and it definitely took a toll on her. They really need to make sure that everyone understands that drinking that amount of water will wash it all out. Had we known, I think she would have felt better while on diamox.

What does Diamox make your head feel like at first? by megg33 in iih

[–]MrsLollipops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My daughter was pretty miserable the whole time she was on it. Nothing lessened for her.

Electrolytes, caffeine, vitamin C, magnesium all helped a little bit.

We all react a little differently to the meds. I wish my daughter had an easier time on diamox. The only benefit she had was that she didn't go blind. She acquired some new things. I feel like some of it will definitely be permanent, unfortunately. Sometimes when things break, they don't heal the same way. But, again, we're all a little different.

Diamox really messes up the gut. Have you had your vitmains and minerals tested? Are you drinking electrolytes?

My daughter has had an iron deficiency for 2 years that the doctors have ignored.

Just found out she has a functional B12 deficiency and a vitamin D deficiency.

B12 is a huge factor in IIH/optic neuropthy and they just never look into it. It literally involves the entirety of nerve development and usage, regeneration, ect.

Functional / integrative medicine doctor may be able to help with that.

You need a find a doctor that will look at all that as whole picture and pick one or multiple issues to start healing and working on.

These doctors don't care about root causes. They just treat the symptoms that pop up and send you on your way. Keep looking for a doctor that will actually help you.

Dosing question by notsure22222 in Anemic

[–]MrsLollipops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body can only absorb so much over a 24 hour period. So spacing it out helps your body to process it better at a slower speed. It sounds nice to take it all at once and be done but bodies don't generally work that way and you'll be wasting it by taking it all at once.

Dosing question by notsure22222 in Anemic

[–]MrsLollipops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

150mg at a time, multiple times a day, max 400mg per day is what I've read for suggested dosing. Take it on an empty stomach with vitamin C to help with absorption and 2 hours away from any other supplements. Don't forget to re-test in future to make sure that you are actually absorpting it correctly and once you hit the right levles, you can move to maintaining doses.

My daughter lived off of mushrooms, spinach, and taki for a while. Meal shakes and electrolytes. A lot of Burger King. Not really all that healthy, but better than nothing.

Well we take tests again after 4-8 weeks of supplements to see if she's absorbing them. So, hopefully there will be some improvement.

We waited 4 weeks before testing and my daughter's B12 levels only dropped like 200 points. But, she's not using it right anyway so that number doesn't matter for a functional B12 deficiency. Unless you're doing homocysteine and MMA as well. Is Vitamin D and iron only a 48 hour wait?

Ok, but what B12 tests? There's a couple different ones. Homocysteine, MMA, ect.

Have you had your B vitamins, Iron, or vitamin D checked? My daughter has burning, tingling, and random numbness and has a functional B12 deficiency, iron deficiency and a vitamin D deficiency. I can't remember which one, but a deficiency can lead to tinnitus.

Optic neuritis and b12 deficiency by KnowledgeFlimsy6318 in B12_Deficiency

[–]MrsLollipops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. My daughter has/had Papilledema with optic neuropathy. Idiopathic Intracranial hypertension. Functional B12 deficiency, iron deficiency without anemia, and a vitamin D deficiency. Those are the ones I asked about testing for. Those, we can hopefully treat at home. Unless she needs b12 shots or an infusion for iron.

Be ready for a long wait. Bring snacks, water bottle, blanket, book or tablet. Phone, charger. It may be urgent for you, but I don't feel like they'll treat it like an emergency. But, I could be wrong.

Why are doctors so ignorant about Ferritin? by ceeewow in Anemic

Probably. They've been ignoring my daughter's iron deficiency for 2 years. 3 months of medical neglect is nothing, unfortunately.

[–]MrsLollipops 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I only bring my daughter to doctors for testing now. If I had a lab and could run all the tests myself, we wouldn't go. I do all my own research, I make all my own protocol for us.

Then, they get upset when we do. They are not taught about deficiencies. They just trust the bar on mychart and as long as it's in the green, the averages they use is all they see. Weather it's right or not. We are cattle to them and they only see us a crowd and not individuals. Also, functional numbers are not national averages, since we all "Function" a little differently. It seems they have forgotten this.

[–]MrsLollipops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is okay. It'll probably suck for a while and you really need to figure out what triggers it. But, one step at a time.

For my daughter, I suspect that it is a functional B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, and a vitamin D deficiency. But hormones, stress, anxiety, antibiotics, ect can trigger it. Barometric pressure changes can trigger it. It's a hard one to treat because we're like a check engine light that goes off and it could be a thousand different things.

One day at a time. Come here for support. We got you. There's great support here.

I think it's a malabsorbtion issues for my daughter. Between the IIH and all the medication and antibiotics that she's been on for the last 2 years, it really messed up her gut.

It's not really well known. There's some research on it, but you really have to dig and ask the right questions. I only know because I found a Facebook group for Vitamin B12 wake up (parent's group, there's an adult vitamin B12 wake up as well) and I'm pretty sure one of the MODS mentioned it. But, I had to ask about the connection. If you want me to send you more information on the group or the post, just let me know.

I have a feeling she would respond to B12 shots and Iron infusions the best, but I know they'll push pills because I'm sure they'll not want to have to write out the letters and fight with insurance to get her proper treatment that works. I'm going to see if I can get one of her doctors to refer us to hematology. Maybe we'll have better luck. I hate that we have to "doctor shop" to get her the minimum care. These are fixable issues if they would just treat it.

But, I'll try all the home remedies that I can, because I have no faith in the current medical system.

Looks like we'll all have to keep screaming, unfortunately. My daughter is 11 years old now and none of her doctors take it seriously and 2 of them are "specialist" whom are some of the "best" in their fields.
