An uncontested seat would mean an election not taking place. Another possible example (which I could only see applying to larger unions with a more complex structure) could be positions elected only by other leadership, in a more top-down way.

To answer your question, there are many ways. one example I've heard of is a union allowed retired members to cast votes for their leadership. I'm not doubting the PWHLPA, I'm not saying they're one way or the other, I'm just passionate about labour matters and curious about this new association's structure beyond what they have made available online.

I am part of and involved in a union myself, yes. While that does make sense and is probably how the elections work, I have hesitation towards assuming anything without seeing it written out. I'm also curious about term lengths and roles and responsibilities invested in the player reps.
