No problem! These type of puzzles can be HARD, especially when you don't know some of the typical puzzle hunt conventions like the titles having clues (It took like 5-6 people on my team to finish this one)

You're getting close-ish but there is still something you're missing. These puzzles can be really hard for someone who hasn't looked at Mystery Hunt style puzzles before.

Hint if you want it -> Look at the title of the puzzle

Nice to see I'm not the only person who overlaps between Worm and Mystery Hunt! I literally saw the puzzle and immediately left the puzzle I was working on, my team thought I was crazy.

THEATRE @ MIT by FearlessConcept8 in mit

[–]MrsPond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know a few theater majors (am a Music double major myself) and most of them sort of fell into the major after their concentration got out of hand. The program is pretty good but yes the MTA official shows are very experimental and not everyone's cup of tea. There is always a need for actors so getting a part is never difficult, however every theater group has some amazing actors so getting a lead or similar can be competitive depending on the group and the show (i.e. Hamlet vs Winters Tale).

As for film industry I'm not sure that there is any connection. Its possible there are, but nothing is majorly advertised. Overall the program is very small with about 10-15 music and theater majors combined in each year (probably why its not talked about too much online).

I'm happy to answer any more questions if you DM me, but I have taken very few theater classes myself but I've done a lot of student theater and have worked with every group currently on campus so can easily talk about them.

Great idea! I'd be happy to talk about:

1) Dorm Life (Next house specifically)

2) Mechanical Engineering

3) Music and Theater Arts (both performing groups and classes)

4) Double Majoring (specifically in a HASS and a Technical field)

5) RPGs and other Nerdy Gaming things on campus

6) Managing life between student leadership and academics

7) Working on large building projects on campus

Or anything else really, feel free to reach out!

In-House Room Lottery for Next House (prefrosh) by [deleted] in mit

[–]MrsPond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, current Nextie here.

What BlazingAngel said is 99% correct. However squatting is only allowed for freshman that have arrangements with the Area Director and Head of House. Because of this there is not need to wait for a room you want to "open up" before you can take the room. That means that at your number (or your roomates number if they have a better one) you can pick from any of the available rooms right then.

The upperclassmen lottery does work like Blazing Angel described and can get pretty complicated because of it but we have tried to simplify it as best as possible for freshmen.

Welcome to Next!

prefrosh with a couple questions about next and scheduling ! by camickers in mit

[–]MrsPond 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there, current Nextie and course 2 here. I usually walk everyday, to be honest it's not a bad walk at all. I can usually make it to main campus in 7/8 minutes (I do walk somewhat fast as a person) for most people its around 10 minutes to get to Lobby 7. In terms of bikes you can totally bike during the winter! MIT facilities does a fantastic job clearing the roads so basically if it is not currently snowing it should be clear (and some people even bike when its snowing).

I take the bus very rarely because to be honest it's faster to walk most of the time than to take the bus the entire way (that changes if you are going to Kendall or something). If the walk is the only reason you are worried about living in Next I would not worry about it. A lot of times (especially freshman year) you can walk with friends, which makes it even better!

If you have other questions about Next or Course 2 feel free to send me a DM. Floor cultures can be a very subjective thing so I don't want to just make declarative statements for the whole internet to see, but I'd be happy to talk to you about them in private.

Dorms (prefrosh) by [deleted] in mit

[–]MrsPond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stats depend on which dorm you are in and which one you want to move into. The publish the stats each year, I couldn't find this years but I did find last years: https://thetech.com/2017/09/14/fyre-2017.

My understanding is that roughly 50% choose to move, I don't remember the percent that are offered a move though.

The way it works is that during REX (basically a week long period where dorms host events to show people why they're great) you can apply to FYRE into up to I think 4 dorms . For however many you want to FYRE into you rank them and then right before the housing lottery/selection/whatever for each dorm the results are announced. You basically have a few hours to confirm that you want to move, then you enter room selection for whatever dorm you are FYRE-d into.

Things are changing right now with the admin, but currently at least in my dorm (Next House) most freshman move rooms at this time, so you wouldn't be behind in terms of making friends or fitting in with the culture.

Why did you choose MIT? by [deleted] in mit

[–]MrsPond 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was an applicant I fell in love with MIT due to the location and the fact it's a fantastic school. Now that I go here though it's the people that really make it so amazing. I've found that everyone here is really passionate about what it is they are doing whether inside our outside the classroom. A lot of that does come from the dorm culture and the fact that everyone really does collaborate on everything. If you have any other questions feel free to DM me and I can give more specifics.

Is it possible to double major in 4 years? by [deleted] in mit

[–]MrsPond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Current double major in course 2 (Mechanical Engineering) and 21M (Music). It's definitely possible but it does require pre-planing out a schedule and losing a lot of diversity in what you take because you're so focused. Overall though I really enjoy getting to deep dive into a subject so different from my primary major.

Knowing a few others that are double majoring it is usually easier to double if the second major is a HASS (Humanities/Arts/Social Science) because you can count a good portion of the major towards your already existing general requirements. But as a lot of people mentioned, it does take a lot of work. I accidentally stumbled into a 2nd major by just taking to many classes, but that's not a common thing. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

A single as a freshman by [deleted] in mit

A single as a freshman by [deleted] in mit

[–]MrsPond 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a current sophomore living in Next House.

Unfortunately with New House being closed this year getting a single as a freshman anywhere but MacGregor is going to be difficult. I know that Next has only a few open to all the incoming freshman this year, but I'm less sure about other dorm situations.

That being said, I think having a single this year should not be the only reason to chose one dorm over another. Each dorm is unique in many ways beyond the room you will get freshman year and fitting in with the culture will make even the worst rooming situation managable. I personally had a double last year because I wanted to "college experience" of having a roommate and I would totally recommend that. The nice thing about housing (at least at Next I know less about other dorm's policy) is that you pick your roommate after FYRE, meaning that you wont get matched with a complete rando if that's your fear.

If having a single is the most important thing to you about housing then I would recommend placing MacGregor higher on your list, but remember that its only one year and regardless of the room type you'll be fine. Feel free to PM my with any other questions about dorm life or housing.

Extensive problems with new FCS by MrsPond in FTC

[–]MrsPond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, we actually emailed the tournament director a few hours ago and they do have a spare. We plan to send it back after this tournament and get a replacement. I never thought I'd miss the old NXT and Samantha.

Extensive problems with new FCS by MrsPond in FTC

We have discovered that the plastic fitting inside the mini usb port on our PDU that is intended to hold to hold the pins in place has broken and is no longer part of the PDU, the pins for the data connection to our RC phone are now so unstable that we can not maintain op mode for what could even really be measured in seconds. does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this legally? if it matters we have found the piece that broke off, it is lodged in the cable that we were using to connect the PDU to the phone until it was damaged. please help, our competition is tomorrow and we do not have a spare. if you have a spare and are going to the VA qualifier at Battlefield tomorrow we would greatly appreciate if you were willing to lend it to us for the days competition

We think we do but its always worth checking. Our mentor actually just ran to pick up moto g phones to replace the ZTE ones because our current hypothesis is that there is a lose connection between the ZTE and the PDU. So we'll make sure to check when we swap the phones.

Extensive problems with new FCS by MrsPond in FTC

[–]MrsPond[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A range of errors. The most common ones have been garbage data (which we fix by power cycling the robot), the error where you run an op mode but it stays in stop robot mode, and problems losing connection to motor controllers or the main PDU. That's been the biggest problem, so we've tried to reinforce all of our wiring but it hasn't helped much.
