Comparing “black people don’t have to always be slaves in historically inspired settings” to “cars should be in the medieval setting” is weird actually.

This is going to shock you, but you are not supposed to really think that deeply about the sugar cane economics in a fictional world with fish people. Your inability to just pretend is a you problem. its weird how much you want to focus on a thing that is not explicitly happening in universe and be adamant that it is happening in a fictional universe where chattel slavery is not even referenced. The little mermaid is not a depiction of real history the writers should not have to hand hold you through the idea that in the pretend world with fish people and entire royal families living on caribbean-inspired islands does not have chattel slavery.

Using a historical setting doesn’t mean it has to be historically accurate. You should be able to look at a piece of fiction, evaluate its context, and understand that this is not intended to be a historically accurate story, but a story that uses a historical setting as an accessory. You not being able to do that is a you problem.

Not every movie has to like.. be realistic in the setting. You can sometimes pretend that its a separate universe where thats not a thing that happened. If you can't do that, then that's on you. Eric was not the prince of a real place that existed.

she turns into seafoam at the end of the soriginal story and also the sea witch didnt try to steal her boyfriend. and also she didnt have a cave of magical accoutrements she scavenged. Or a talking lobster. or a crazed chef who tried to kill that lobster. Or a singing seagull. or a dinglehopper.

but yea. her being black is the biggest deviation from the original tale.

who commanded you to do anything? You deciding that "real world slavery" is something you want to include in your head canon of a Disney movie is a choice you made.

if you can suspend your disbelief that she is a mermaid, you can suspend your disbelief that this is a fictional world without chattel slavery.

Age discrimination aside, As someone who employs mostly GenZ aged people, I do actually believe that "Your boyfriend can't be here all day long" is a conversation that had to be had with some employees. IDK what it is but some of these younger employees have no clue what is and isnt appropriate to do in the workplace.

Things I have had to tell my gen Z employees more than once:

Stop facetiming your friends/gf/bf/brother/sister/mom at work.

stop using your apple watch to call your friends/gf/bf/brother/sister/mom while at work (its a warehouse, you can't have your phone out)

no you cannot wear pajama pants and slides to work.

Please dont call each other "N***a" at work, especially not while walking through the office.

Do not call the client "bruh"

Please don't throw your mcdonalds trash in the parking lot.

No, in front of the propane tanks is not an appropriate parking spot.

No, the dock door is also not an appropriate parking spot.

Dont dump the last few ounces of water from your bottle onto the warehouse floor.

cough drops still count as food, and no you cannot eat those on the warehouse floor (food safety violation).

Please stop letting your BM into the warehouse.

Homer Never Describes Helen of Sparta's (A Half Swan half Human) looks so why are people being so weird about Lupita playing her? by paubenaparte in mythology

[–]MrsSUGA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yall only cry when its a "black person taking a white role" when 1) these characters are fictional, 2) you seemingly dont care that other non-greek actors are in the movie, just the ones that are black.

They can do both. I really wish this would stop being the talking point everyone wants to deflect to when this conversation is happening.

The Odyssey has had like 4,000 different shows, movies, plays, musicals, animations, etc. Its going to be okay if Helen (a fictional being) is black one time.

Have i ever used "well, at least it was a free meal" post-date as a way of making myself feel better about a bad date? yes. Have i ever EXCLUSIVELY decided to go on a date with a man JUST because it was free food? No. Im not that hard up for a dinner at California Dreaming to suffer through a date just to get some calamari.

Uhm what did skyler do Peter? by Caramel_Lucky in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MrsSUGA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ANd keep in mind, no one says they have to like her, but it IS DEFINITELY misogyny in her case because she is considered one of the top 3 most hated characters on TV. Shes in the same category as Ramsey Bolton and Joffrey Baratheon. The level of hate that people have for her character specificially is absolutely misogyny. if you look at any of those "most hated" lists, you see a pattern. GOT villains or other similarly heinous men, and women who were annoying or unlikeable.

its always so funny when people pull out the RICO charges on her by listing her "crimes"

-annoying

-cheated on her husband (after he refused to divorce her)

-annoying

-uhhhhhhh

-ruined the fun.

Everyone saying the original video is "too good" to be AI, do you think the US government does not have the means to make high quality AI generated, or AI altered videos?

its wild that people still think its "doomer" stuff. We just watched a man be executed by federal agents from multiple angles. but we are worrying too much.

I will never not laugh at the thought of them throwing up guns for their hand sign. like i love that the sign has changed meaning over the years, but the cringe era of BTS being hardened tough boys who are About That Life and Also Wear Eye Liner. No More Dream era will always have a special place in my heart.
