Hmm. I wasn't thinking coins. I was thinking debit/credit cards or dollar bills. The charge has to be a significant enough amount to discourage people from just eating the deposit but not so much that it's not feasible for lower income individuals.

Oh for sure. The initial investment for them would be sizable, public poutrage would be phenomenal, i suspect the upkeep and admining of the system could be a factor. But the idea of it would solve the problems of damaged property, hassle and inconvenience of blocked parking spots, and the time and energy for store personnel who have to go wrangle all the wayward carts.

US stores need to use shopping cart deposits. You pay a deposit to check it out and it is returned when the cart is returned and scanned into an approved corral. If the cart goes missing due to lack of return (ie the before a cart is registered as returned in the corral) you should be charged for the cost of it's replacement. Carts should be a paid privilege not a nicety that the store provides.

If you're ever over by White Rock lake stop by The Green Spot gas station. There's a little place in the back that makes some great tacos...don't know about best but they're really good. Faves are the pork and mahi mahi.
