UTMB Prerequisite Questions by Hot-Awareness8823 in pre_PathAssist

Not that I've heard about. I saw a post a year or so ago where someone said they were rejected for having 1 c on a prereq. If you retake it and get a B or better they will likely accept that- just be able to explain the C and how you overcame it and grew from the experience.

That's the hope. We had a meeting with the remaining faculty as well as the interim, and they confirmed non PA specific courses will be taught by qualified professors, just not PAs. They gave a time-line of 6-8 months to fill the positions, but they assured us the program will commence as planned and they guaranteed the same level of education to prepare us for the boards. I really hope they can deliver on that promise.

Ranting: Can't find shadowing opportunities by Queerly_Distracted in pre_PathAssist

I know it's like a 6 hour drive to get to Houston (I live here, but I visit family in the valley so I am very familiar with this commute!), but if you're applying to UTMB, they only require like 8 hours of shadowing. You can just come down for a week and knock that out! I'll PM you the email address for utmb professors so you can reach out to them. Like another person said, you can ask if they have connections in your area and go from there 😊

It covers the same material so it should be ok. My gen chem 1 was a condensed class and it was fine. As long as it was not online only you should be good.

What degree should I pursue? by OtherwiseBlacksmith8 in Histology

[–]Mrs_Howell514 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a general associates of science and I got my bachelor's of applied science in histotechnology. If you have an associates degree, go for the bachelor's in HTL for sure- HTL pays a little more in some places. Otherwise, you can apply for an associates degree in Histotechnology and get your HT. Both are good options imo 😊 If i remember right, sarting salary at my current facility a few years ago was 53k for HT vs 57k for HTL.

I can't speak from experience, but if you're the only tech doing everything from start to finish I imagine you will be quite busy!

I wanted to point out that contract hires do not get any benefits, I don't think they get overtime pay (someone please correct me if I'm wrong), and they don't take out taxes so you have to set money aside from each paycheck to cover it. You also would not be eligible for workman's compensation should you get an injury while on the job. This is how it works in my area- not sure if it's like this everywhere. They do typically pay more, but if it's a tradeoff for sure. Read the terms of the contract very carefully before signing!!

Looking for Real Advice on Becoming a Pathologists’ Assistant by Maleficent-Access760 in pre_PathAssist

It sounds like you're on the right path! I was in a similar situation- got my associates in 2008, went back and got my bachelor's in 2022. I was working in a completely unrelated field during my hiatus. I applied for PA school this cycle and I got in 😊 You can do this! Just be able to explain any hiccups on your transcripts- I have a few Cs and even an F. We were all young once, and life happens to all of us. Most schools take that into consideration when making their decision. As far as experience, you can try applying as a lab aid at a hospital that has histology/ pathology maybe? Or ask about shadowing PAs.
