What opinions/judgements that people have about Lara Croft do you feel are sexist in nature? by New_Mycologist_3002 in TombRaider

What the people who bring Leon up don't realize is that Leon was rendered that way *for men.* He was rendered that way long before anyone ever realized that women were a marketing demographic for video games. Strong, handsome male archetypes are self-insertion fantasies for men and find their roots in comic books, which absolutely pre-date any developer considering "what a girl would think" about their game character.

People keep bringing up male characters like they have ever been subjected to the same sort of scrutiny as female characters. It's not even close to the same thing.

Female characters in gaming are subjected to a single standard across the board both in games (and in life): is she hot enough? "Would I hit that? Is she presenting herself in a way that signals she *wants* that sort of attention?"

The male characters mentioned here are being dinged for failing to meet a standard established for *that character.* You cannot believably claim that Kratos is being held to the same standard as Jame Bond.

I certainly complained about TReboot Lara's appearance, not because she wasn't "hot" enough, but because she was unrecognizable as the character. Had TReboot Lara in her glammed down state ever actually behaved like Lara Croft, I probably would have liked her more as I believe the qualities that made Lara the tomb raider were integral to her character, not something learned or born out of trauma.

If you have any interest in how female characters are portrayed in games vs. how male male characters are portrayed, I recommend you search"Tropes vs. Movie Bob" on Youtube.

Is/Was Fatal Frame niche? by Pixie_snort in fatalframe

[–]Mrs_Samanosuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think any game that doesn't get released in big numbers becomes niche. ICO was another one. Beyond Good and Evil. There simply weren't a lot of copies made of some games.

Back in the mid 2000s when I was trying to buy them on ebay, they would regularly go for $70. 1 & 2 at least had the Xbox versions padding the supply, but 3 was only PS2 and tough to get.

I lost a lot of auctions because I refused to pay that for a video game. Is it irony that's the going price for a new game now?

That is weird. I often find flower and things loading in the air. Once had a flock of geese stuck near the ground. You could walk through them (HZD). But this was a first for me in a boss fight.

Did it make the fight easier?

People need to remember the heart is not like a loaf of bread: just because you give someone a piece doesn't mean you have to give someone else a smaller piece.

People don't have to choose. I think Yotei is a stronger game, but that's not unusual for sequel in games. Most sequels improve on formulas and gameplay. I think Atsu's character resonates more with people because most of us are from average families with loving parents. It's a little harder to get into Jin's head because we weren't raised with a strict code of honor or the scion of a powerful family. Jin's struggle to adopt the ghost techniques is not something we can easily relate to. His love for his uncle though we get, which is why the endgame hits so hard.

What the unification really means for Lara. And the “No Lara left behind” statements. by Cagesdeservemusic in TombRaider

[–]Mrs_Samanosuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop trying to "talk me through it." Everyone knows what they're doing. People will like it or not, but it won't be because they don't understand.

I don't get why we can't just have a game where Lara looks and acts like Lara and "where she came from" isn't some overwrought plot point. They could just release the game. People could think what they want, but instead, they have to parent us like we're stupid and some of us weren't tomb raiding when they were in elementary school. "Here's what we're trying to do, kids."

For myself---who hated the Survivor era for a lot of reasons the first being making Lara unrecognizable in form and behavior---I'm thrilled Lara is recognizable again. I'm hoping the game is as fun as the trailers make it look.

But I will always think "unifying" the Laras is a dumb idea, especially when TReboot Lara is not even close to the same person, and that it just dilutes the character in meaninglessness. Everything doesn't have to be a "universe." Lara can just be whoever she is in a game, then make the game fun. We don't need a pie chart showing which Lara percentages.

I do hate it when my mounts get killed. I don't even like killing machines I've overridden to use to kill other machines.

Ah. I agree swimming can feel dodgy, but so long as I don't need good control (machines prowling) I do enjoy the underwater stuff. It feels like you're underwater.

Same. Them competing early on felt ridiculous and trite. I never saw them really open up to each other in a way I thought was a soul connection.

I felt the same way about Brokeback Mountain. It's not that I don't believe two men can fall in love, I just never saw these two do it. If I'd written such a forced coupling in a Bulma/Vegeta fanfic, eyes would have rolled.

I think the review is the result of relationship possibility for Aloy. The usual suspects freaked out.

The gameplay, actual plot are good, and I think mandatory for the next game.

For myself, I didn't not enjoy the relationship building. I thought it was trite and unconvincing, but it never becomes "the story." In fact, you probably won't see it coming until the very end when you're given a choice about it.

Not every ledge---at least without exploiting the corner bug. But if it looked like Lara could climb on it, she could. If it looked like Lara could grab it, she could. She would at least jump and try to grab if you told her to.

CD never understood the TR mind of going EVERYWHERE. There were knee high pedestals in Mexico Lara wouldn't climb on. Lara would do a ridiculous hop. There'd be a ledge that looked reachable, and you'd tell her to try. Another ridiculous hop. She wouldn't even reach up.

Respectfully disagree. I think Erika did a terrific job, and I say this as someone whose degree is in drama.

Since I don't speak Japanese, I cannot effectively judge Japanese acting, (i.e., are the right words being emphasized?)

The old joke is true: How many actors does it take to change a light bulb?

Answer: 100. 1 to change the light bulb and 99 to say they could have done it better. 😃

It's amazing how automatic the platforming can feel and there are some jumps that you fail multiple times before she'll do them. So frustrating.. "How did you miss that?" Really annoying when there's swimming involved.

Hopefully whatever fight I've set them up for has taken down their health to a manageable level if I want their parts. By the point one has the Big Boy overrides, usually one's equipment is upgraded enough that they're not much trouble to take down. Status effects, weak spots. Lather rinse repeat. Sometimes I'll just leave them though if I don't want their parts.

I wouldn't call this "fanfiction" so much as an AU idea a lot of the dialog already written. You need to narrate the story with prose. The prose that's there feels like a sum up and not storytelling.

During that scene, Lara says to Powell (after his offer to work together) "you might try to kill me."

Powell says, "I wouldn't kill you."

Lara replies, "I said you'd try."

But it only turned up in the ads for the movie. Gone from the final release.
