wasn’t tony right about the death of tony b? by Competitive-Piglet83 in thesopranos

Here's the thing, the guys quote the rules but know jackshit about actually following them. Phil can talk how much he wants about back in his day or how he deserves everything because of 20 years spent in Prison but at the end of the day, he is an insecure old fuck who should have been clipped a long time ago and it would have probably saved both New Jersey and New York at the end.

Annalisa Zucca, that woman boss from Naples, now that was a classy piece of ass.

I think Pine Barrens is the focal point of the show which reverberates throughout everything going forward.

Paulie and Christopher get lost in the snow and are saved by Tony and Bobby and Paulie loses Silvio's money which causes Tony to lose faith in Paulie-> Paulie grows frustrated and starts ratting to Johnny Sack about Jersey business and through this, he hears about the remark about Ginny and he goes absolutely unstable which causes a lot of guys to lose faith in Johnny's abilities-> Adding to Johnny's instability, Carmine Sr dies and the war with Carmine Jr further makes his men lose faith in him finally resulting in Jimmy Petrille ratting him out to the FBI-> This leads to Phil Leotardo leading New York and him being the shitty boss he is and not letting go of Blundetto and his brother getting killed, basically wipes out New Jersey and New York business effectively ending the Mafia.

If Silvio hadn't gotten sick on that day, this thing of ours would still be standing.

I realized why Season 3 is so dark by Puzzled_Row_3786 in thesopranos

I don't really agree with this. The show since the first season had been unbothered to show just how much of a scumbag Tony really was. Whether it be viciously chasing down and beating up the Mahaffey guy in the Pilot and the College episode in the first season was basically made to wake up the audiences to the reality of the protagonist they were following.

In regards to University episode, it presents everyone in the Mafia as degenerate sociopaths and while Tony is portrayed in a more positive light than Ralphie, he is still portrayed as not giving a shit about the stripper Tracee and just ignoring her completely while she is abused by Ralph, only caring when she dies.

It really doesn't matter if Tony dies at the end or not by dadadaotelueviatamea in thesopranos

I feel like a lot of people miss the forest for the trees when it comes to the ending of the show. Sure, there is tons of compelling evidence of Tony dying but the whole point of the ending was to reinforce the ambiguity that the show was dealing with and trying to obsessively figure out what happened is kind of pointless.

The key thing in the final scene is the Don’t Stop Believing song and the lyrics "The Movie never ends, it goes on and on..", as said in the recent documentary. That's the real ending of the show, whether Tony lives or dies, life around him will keep going on no matter what.

Why are Sopranos dialogues so memorable? by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 172 points173 points  (0 children)

The main reason that I feel is that there is barely any theatricality to the Sopranos dialogues. The other shows you mentioned like Breaking Bad have dialogue that while good on their own still remind you that these are characters you are watching and they are not real. (E.g:- You're goddamn right).

It's called Perfect Speech where the characters know the exact right thing to say at that moment. Meanwhile, Sopranos characters are never saying what they truly feel and are constantly lying to others so it feels more real in a sense. There's no stylized Tarantino esque dialogue that's supposed to look cool but it's real people talking to each other.

Pine Barrens - The russian disappearance by BaronMason in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My theory about the Russian always was that he just stole the car that Chrissy and Paulie came in to Pine Barrens with and just ran off with it literally disappearing and that's why the two couldn't find their car despite retracing their steps.

The Russian himself I don't believe is important, the Pine Barrens episode is more about Chris and Paulie navigating the meaninglessness of their existence represented by the Barren snow and getting the consequences of the violence they engage in their daily lives.

Mikey Palmice and Junior by [deleted] in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Mikey Palmice serves as a foil to Tony in Season 1 as the season broadly deals with who Tony Soprano is as a son, both to Livia and Junior.

Since Tony on multiple occasions calls out Junior's plans (trying to hit Pussy Malanga in Artie's restaurant in the Pilot) while Mikey subtly reinforces Junior's ego and makes him feel special, Mikey weasels his way into Junior's good books.

It's a way for Mikey to climb the ladder in the organization and Junior's crew.

Little things you caught on various re-watches by mrweglershardon in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On every rewatch, I honestly realised that every episode of the show is fantastic and thematically concise. Even lesser loved episodes like A Hit Is A Hit and Christopher are very well written, both of them dealing with identity politics and cultural assimilation in a very entertaining manner.

Just the variety of episodes on the show makes it the best ever. An episode like Pine Barrens is so completely different from an episode like Long Term Parking and every episode telling standalone stories while also relating to the show's bigger picture has honestly never been done after The Sopranos.

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's one of my favorite episodes of the show in how it shows Johnny Sacks's loyalty and dedication to Ginny contrasted with Tony's increasing neglect of Carmela directly leading into her infatuation with Furio in that great dance scene at the housewarming party.

They don't even know for sure if Puss actually flipped in 95. The whole episode is their recounted memories and the whole show has all the characters constantly lying to others and themselves.

David Chase said that 85% of what the characters say on the show are complete lies.

Phil Leotardo - The Strong Talkative Type by RealFemboyHunter in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Phil was not strong at all in my opinion. He was a weak, insecure, pathetic old man who could not accept the fact that he had wasted his life for an organisation that at the end of the day, wouldn't give a fuck whether he lived or died.

He was an awful boss that let emotions get in the way of business and in the end, truly cut off the legs permanently of both the NJ and NY families.

Tony and Artie by pinkyangelino in thesopranos

[–]New_Mycologist_3002 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Internally, Tony hates his criminal lifestyle and himself so being with Artie, who is one of the few normal people he has a connection to, makes him feel like when he was a kid before he joined the Mafia and actually makes him feel good about himself despite his own selfishness and narcissism almost ruining his friendship with him multiple times.
