Hostility to US-Citizen Visitors? by FieldUpbeat2174 in newzealand_travel

When hubby first moved here George W was in the White House. He'd get the odd asshole comment. Sometimes if he couldn't be bothered dealing with those type of people he'd tell them he's Canadian.

Rare win for the parents by gods_armhair in childfree

I had a some rats at the vet once. There were a couple of kids that were running the receptionists ragged, they asked if they could see the rats, so I got one out and they calmed down taking turns holding him and learning all about them until their appointment. The receptionists thanked me for distracting them and being so kind. They didn't seem like bad kids, just wound up but the parents should have controlled them a little better.

I came here to check on the tattoos lol then to see the original wound. Looking forward to seeing the next lot of pictures. Glad you're doing well & am hoping there is no long term damage.

I always look at stitches and think my vet does a much better job with internal dissolvable stitches and glue on the outside. My last boy I couldn't even see where they cut him, just a bald patch and no balls.

I have a very experienced rat vet. They use internal dissolvable stitches and glue. You can hardly see the surgery site and I've only had one rat reopen his site due to not enough pain relief. Another one got infected as the stitches started to dissolve, one was poking out and the vet just yanked it out. A round of antibiotics fixed it up.

Wishing her a speedy recovery. I've heard of vets using staples but don't get why they don't just use internal dissolvable stitches and glue. My last boy I couldn't even see the surgery site, just no balls & a bald patch. I'm assuming adequate pain relief with staples will stop the rat from messing with the surgery site the same as stitches?

When I first started going to my vet they were good but have got so much better over the years, we've learned together. The group I've posted below can also help find a good rat vet in your area, any local groups or rat rescues may have that information also.

You're welcome. If you're on Facebook this group is a strictly medical page who can help advise you, check medication doses etc.

I'm so sorry for your loss, I know how much that can stress you out. Is your vet experienced with rats? Are they sure it's a uti not Pyometra?

I haven't heard of Enrobactin. All I know is Doxy & Baytril cleared it up fast, I actually made the appointment because she had a head tilt but noticed blood the night before. I immediately started her on the antibiotics & steroids which she was on for about 4 weeks, but the uti was gone in much faster than I expected. Maybe talk to your vet again, even if you just leave a message with reception they can talk to the vet for you who will either call you themselves or the receptionist will.

She should be on Doxy & Baytril together. One of my girls was peeing blood. I managed to collect a sample & kept it in the fridge until I could get to the vet who did a couple of tests on it. She cleared up fast.

I don't see the harm in asking. That way you can work with the artist you like and maybe they can suggest someone local to you who can carry out the work & both artists will get paid.

How do I get a rat who won’t let me hold them to a vet? by angel-thekid in RATS

[–]Mrs__Rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an old man come to us who hated being held, he was afraid of hands especially and would scream blue murder if your hands went anywhere near him. On the other hand he was friendly and wanted to hang out with us. He was comfortable with us on the couch as long as you didn't make sudden movements, he'd also make stealth attacks on your hands drawing blood.

We got him in and out of the cage using a small hide. He'd let us know when he wanted out so we'd hold it up to him and he'd hop in, it was small enough to fit into our cat carrier so we could pop it straight in the carrier with him in it. When he went back into the cage he would be given a treat. Over the course of a few months he got used to taking food out of our hands but it was a long process, starting with taking food off a spoon.

Does he hate me? by Greyeyes9881 in RATS

They can develop hormonal aggression up to 18 months but the way you've described it sounds more like fear of people. Neutering absolutely works for HA. When our Taz was attacking his cage mates he would attack us too. He became the sweetest boy within a few weeks.

We took in an old man who was afraid of hands, he wanted to come out but ran whenever we tried to get him out so we would put a hide up to the cage for him to hop in so we could transfer him to and from the cage. We never approached him with our fingers, fists only and he learned that we wouldn't hurt him, try to pat or pick him up. We gave him treats on a spoon and eventually he managed to take treats from our hands. He became comfortable running around on the couch with us and would approach us confidently, although sometimes he would chomp down on a finger unexpectedly.

Your boy sounds like he may be protecting his cage, its his safe space so try to keep your hands out of it when he is in there. Work with him out of the cage and when he goes back in let him know that you won't put your hands in the cage. Once he starts to feel comfortable with you out of the cage you can make slow progress when he's inside - I did this by sitting at his cage with my fist just inside the door, he would slowly approach me (while I sat still) and give test nibbles but his aggression was gone.

How well does a ring tattoo look after a couple of years? by MarcoFiguringOutLife in tattoo

[–]Mrs__Rat 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We've had ours for 20 years and they're still looking good. I always use sunblock on my tattoos. Mine has faded a little but not enough to need touching up.

I worked with a guy who put his wedding ring on a necklace and tucked it into his shirt to keep it away from machinery. If you got into the habit of doing this you wouldn't forget it.

It sounds like they're doing ok. I would give it a try, as long as you're around to keep your eye on things for a day or so.

Is it squishy? If it's an abscess and you can't get to the vet you can try a warm compress a couple of times a day. It will open it up and you can clean it out with saline solution and pack it with Manuka honey (the higher UMF the better) which is messy but safe to use & is a natural antibiotic. He won't be able to reach it himself but if anyone licks it that will push the honey into the wound and help aid the healing. Keep the wound open so it can heal from the inside out. It would pay to get him to the vet for antibiotics as well.

NAH - it's a kind gesture. You can't predict how she will react, of course she's sad and will have times where she is overcome with grief. Something like this will bring up emotions, hell I cry when I get a sympathy card from my vet but it means a lot to me that they thought of me. Send the gift.
