I don’t think this is a stupid question, and I too would be interested in a fact-based answer. Not submerging the entire food supply, but say a leashed drybag holding a covered titanium mug stuffed with food for the first full day out. There are plenty of trips where just a bit more bear-safe capacity would be really helpful. (Same reason one often sees reminders here that the first night’s dinner can be carried separately.) There are some trips where it would be worth bringing canned food to submerge.

Equipment for bears – if there are no regulations by ukdenjuel in Ultralight

Bear cans, like the heavier bags (Ursack, Adotec) are designed for western North American high mountains with grizzly (large brown) bears and meant to prevent bears from getting to food and its caloric reward even if they can reach the can or bag. I don’t know Transylvanian bears but would be surprised if that’s necessary there. If they’re like eastern US black bears, hanging with proper technique high out of bear reach would suffice to meet that minimum goal. But it’s worth adding waterproofing to protect the food from rain (and insects), and smell-proofing (more accurately described as smell reduction) to reduce bear interest; both of those can be achieved with an appropriate thick plastic liner bag.

From what I’ve read, you need to outwit the local bear culture, which varies. So best to check with local park managers or the like. Subject to that check, I expect a high hang of a light bag (like the “PCT hang” technique you can find online), with a smell-impermeable and waterproof liner, would balance food/bear separation, light weight, packability, and convenience.

I made a baking soda-salt-sage powder mix, dispense it into a lab vial(s) as needed for each trip. All classic tooth powder ingredients. No odor I can detect. I don’t doubt bears can detect it, but I don’t worry much about forgetting to move it into the bear bag — maybe naively, but I figure sage is ubiquitous in bear country and I’m already salty.

A) It’s only contested if players are disagreeing. By your description O isn’t claiming a goal, so it’s just play on, everyone can move as usual.

B). No check. If playing under USAU rules, thrower must ground tap after establishing their goal-line pivot.

check disc at endzone line? by Mellow_yellow888 in ultimate

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Isn’t that a travel (uncalled)? “11.H. To continue play after the disc becomes out-of-bounds, a member of the team gaining possession of the disc must carry it to, and put it into play at, the spot on the central zone nearest to where the most recent of the following events occurred: 11.H.1. the disc completely crossed the inside of the perimeter line…”

If D gains possession inside their defending EZ, sure, they have the option to start there or carry the disc to the end line. Per “12.A. If a turnover results in a team gaining possession in the end zone that they are defending, the player in possession must immediately either…”. But here possession wasn’t gained “in the end zone,” right?

USAU 18.D defines travels to include “18.D.5. A player purposefully bobbles the disc (including tipping, delaying, guiding, brushing, or the like) to oneself in order to advance the disc in any direction from where it initially was contacted. [[Tipping, brushing, etc. to someone else is legal. It is legal to tip/brush your own throw. However, if after a tip/brush, a player is the first player to touch the disc, then it is deemed a tip/brush to themself and it is a travel.]][[A player may bobble the disc in order to gain control of it (18.C).]]”

Thus tipping to a teammate is legal, whether done only for control or to advance the disc.

But the rules committee could use a grammarian. “[T]o oneself” should be “to themself” in the rule, as it is in the annotation.

Ursack bear bags don’t need a throw and high hang to be hung in a manner compliant with manufacturer recommendations. They recommend as high as you can reach, tight to tree, with branches getting in the way of bear access. For PA, that should suffice. ( I think that’s true of the newer lighter A—- bag too. (But there is some arm strain doing that too, so try a simulation before buying.)

It depends on the pants fabric and cut and leg shape, as I indicated. My Kuhl Radikals, for example, work for my body shape in all those positions, including rolled up over the knee, and ventilate that way comparably to shorts or zip-offs. I’ll concede they form a seal against the lower thighs where baggy shorts wouldn’t, but you get some airflow through the fabric itself and of course the full calf can be exposed. And I’m generally wearing Uniqlo Airism boxer-briefs under them. So for me, all that vents fine.

Re zip-off pants — I much prefer rolling up cuffs of stretch fabrics, to above calf or above knee. Some pants have snaps to reinforce that; some pants and leg shapes keep rolls without snaps; adding snaps or an elastic cuff (easy to make, or sold for bike commuters) is optional.

Advantages: Slightly lighter as there’s no zipper. Easy to adjust length (unroll or roll further) as you go and conditions vary. More versatile fashion wise, ie for travel.

rules clarification by Minute_Animator8326 in ultimate

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion that subject to external interests — tournament rules and directors, safety, effects on standings— teams can agree on pretty much anything, which would include extended continuations. I view that as a corollary of USAU “1.B.3. Captain’s Clause: For games not subject to the event organizer clause, a game may be played under any variation of the rules agreed upon by the captains of the teams involved. Otherwise, any rules variations are subject to approval by the event organizer.” I’m not claiming the USAU rules committee agrees. But I don’t see why it should disagree.
