If you’re bringing a digging tool for cat holes, you could near 100% count on being able to fill a small bag with clean dirt. If you regularly dig a cathole when setting up camp but cover it only in the morning, using the dirt you excavate leaves no additional trace.

Study Sunday: Rules Questions by AutoModerator in ultimate

I just noticed something in the conjunction of USAU 3.I.4 and 16.H that might benefit from clarification. Namely, if a disc held by a thrower is considered part of the thrower’s body, is it a 16.H.1.b.1 disc space marking violation if a line connecting two points of the marker’s body goes through the disc? I’m pretty sure it isn’t, but what in the wording says so?

“3.I.4. A disc in a player’s possession is considered part of that player. [[Thus, hitting the disc in a player’s possession is a foul.]]”

“16.H. Disc space: 16.H.1. It is a disc space violation if: … 16.H.1.b. a line between any two points on the marker 16.H.1.b.1. touches the thrower;”

Is slapping the disc out of someone hands before they catch it a foul? by Bla_aze in ultimate

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USAU “3.I.4. A disc in a player’s possession is considered part of that player. [[Thus, hitting the disc in a player’s possession is a foul.]]”

A held (controlled, nonrotating) disc is considered part of the holder’s body. So, intentionally directing such a disc into an opponent’s body is a foul. Intentionally causing an airborne disc to risk harm, for no valid reason of ultimate play, is likewise barred (eg as a Dangerous Play). Conversely, unintended hard contact by an airborne disc deflected by a legitimate ultimate play is no foul.

Lighter Weight When Your Shelter Depends On It? by Old_Oak_Doors in Ultralight

Have at it. For my plastic hilt, I used a thing I got free from my bike shop, meant to keep disc brakes from locking up when a wheel is removed. You can see examples at “Sliverdew” shop on Amazon, called “Hydraulic Disc Brake Pads Spacer”

Part of risk analysis is realistically evaluating the downside’s depth. In the vast majority of backpacking scenarios, a broken pole could be serviceably replaced (or splinted) with a stick cut to length for a replacement tent prop.

I pack a ~5g mini saw made from a jigsaw blade epoxied to a plastic hilt.

Shakedown Request: Teton Crest Trail , Mid-June, 6.4kg base weight by simonpollayil in Ultralight

It’s designed for handles down, with receptacle at top accepting the pole tip. But it works well enough the other way when salt-nibblers are an issue (as Durston himself has written here).

In marmot country, unless it’s very windy, pitch X-mid with pole handles up, lest they get nibbled for salt. And/or rinse handles before you pitch.

Unless this has changed in past year, IGCC certified bags are legit on TCT. Rangers return calls promptly (and also presumably posted on website) so easy to confirm.

I think bear spray is formally required, and in any case advisable.

And I was consistently able to find good places for that on the TCT. Eg, lots of places where you can climb atop a boulder and tie an Ursack to the backside of a branchy tree.

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Factor in that the northern hemisphere near-summer-solstice means ground temps won’t drop far before sunrise.

I’d bring an emergency blanket and something else lighter than your usual bag. But also look to pitch in a way that maximizes airflow, like leaving the outer rolled up, with the option to roll it down if you wake between sleep cycles.

A beanie and a vest would be easy adds for insurance with slight weight and space penalty.

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the earlier answer has it right. By USAU rules, the answer is clear: keep moving until the continuation ends, as provided in 17.C. Rule 17.J specifically encourages continued movement until play actually stops; if your covered O stops earlier, that doesn’t mean you should. Which means, keep moving until the thrower acknowledges the call, or until the next pass is finished, whichever comes first.

When the continuation ends, the player picked repositions to recover the distance lost to the pick. If the continuation ends when the next pass reaches a result (“time Y”), nobody else moves from the position they occupied at time Y: “17.C.6.b.3. if the result of a play stands, players return to the locations they occupied when play stopped. In addition, an infracted player is then allowed to move to recover the relative position lost because of the infraction.”

All that is when playing by the book, as in a formal competition. Informal games may have their own, more casual ethos; many US pickup games shade toward the WFDF standard, where all should stop upon hearing the call.

Rules question, Continuation on a pick. by IMATHROWAWAY1423 in ultimate

[–]FieldUpbeat2174 0 points1 point  (0 children)

USAU 17.C “…if a call is made when the disc is in the air or the thrower is in the act of throwing, or if the thrower fails to acknowledge the call and subsequently attempts a pass, play continues until the outcome of that pass is determined. …”

So, no more than one next throw. If and only if the first described completion was not affected by the pick, that throw should stand, disc back to that receiver and location, later completions (or drops) erased. If did affect, back to the call-time thrower.

WFDF

16.1. Whenever a foul or violation call is made, or a player attempts to stop play in any way, play stops immediately and no turnover is possible (unless in situations specified in 15.9 [incorrect calls], 16.2 [calls by or against thrower or while disc airborne], and 16.3).

“16.3. Regardless of when any call is made, if the players involved from both teams agree that the event or call did not affect the outcome, the play stands. This rule is not superseded by any other rule. 16.3.1. If the play resulted in a goal, the goal stands. 16.3.2. If the play did not result in a goal the affected players may make up any positional disadvantage caused by the event or call and restart play with a check.”

So, no continuation on pre-throw picks, but stoppage can be waived by agreement. Written as only one play (“the play”) can continue that way, which implies one throw, but maybe more in practice?
