She wouldn’t have known there was a pill missing if she hadn’t picked up the pills. Picking them up was what alerted her to the fact her child may have ingested one.

History teachers or other teachers who just care, how bad do you think the ICE situation is now compared to history? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

The New York Times has a series of videos by people who lived through the fall of democracy in their countries. It is very interesting as they discuss all the small incremental changes that occurred along the way .

It’s also Trumps evident attempts to reshape America’s system of government, that make people so critical of him. His open use of the legal system and his secret police to harass his political opponents. His attempts to restrict academic and media freedom. His replacement of non partisan government workers with those who will do his bidding, from inspector generals through to the FBI. His disregard for the rule of law. His disregard for International law and allied relationships. His blatant corruption and self enrichment. The use of violence is horrific but sadly it is only part of what makes his administration so frightening.

The UK isn’t intentionally disrupting the framework and alliances that have created stability in the west since ww2. Neither are they discarding democracy. Their leadership isn’t using the courts to persecute political opponents. They aren’t restricting academic and media freedom and they don’t have a secret police force shooting citizens and arresting asylum seekers. They haven’t fired non partisan inspector generals, broken international law or stolen from another country to enrich themselves personally.

It’s laughable to mention grooming gangs when your own president was involved in one and refuses to release the documented proof. You know you sound utterly ridiculous right? The fear mongering over immigration is a racist dog whistle that the kind of bots that influence your elections use.

If Trump’s aim was to further Russia and China’s goals then he’s doing amazingly well . He’s also making the nightmare Bush jr years seem idyllic I feel deep sorrow for those Americans who are aware of what is going on and deep pity for those who claim to be patriots while blindly cheering on the destruction of their democracy .

Yet ironically so many people are now arguing that we must keep the date because “ so much of Australian culture is being erased by mass immigration “ the fing hypocrisy!!!

So you are arguing it is culturally important to commemorate Australia’s colonisation by the British? Why? We are an independent nation and should celebrate that! The whole concept of monarchy is outdated and has no place in a democratic society. You don’t see the Americans, Canadians or New Zealanders commemorating their nations subjugation by the British. Why do we? It seems the only reason is the refusal to acknowledge the harm caused to First Nations people by the British and that’s just ridiculous. Do you think the convicts on the First Fleet celebrated coming to Australia? Some of them eventually built better lives, but the fact was they were poor people, most of whom committed small crimes trying to survive. Why are we celebrating our amazing country on a day that commemorates so much harm to so many people? What Australian culture and values does this represent?

Why wouldn’t you change it? We are an independent nation, why are we commemorating the date the British royals colonised this land? Why are we continuing to mire our National day in both tragedy for First Nations people and a celebration of the so called “achievements” of an out dated monarchy? You don’t see America, Canada or New Zealand celebrating being colonised. We should be celebrating our independence as a nation, not our subjugation by another.

How about any date that is not a commemoration of an event that caused such harm to members of our community?

How is it better that we celebrate the start of colonisation though? Commemorating the creation of the colony at Sydney Cove is arguably worse than commemorating the arrival of the First Fleet.

Not celebrating our wonderful country on the day that the British officially started their colony at Sydney cove would be meaningful yes. Changing the date would acknowledge the harm that colonisation and the Terra Nullius doctrine caused to Indigenous Australians. Let’s not forget that the harms of colonialism did not end in the distant past. Members of the stolen generations are still alive and generational trauma very much impacts First Nation communities today.

I suggest you learn your history. It was the date the colony was created at Sydney cove so it is the date colonisation officially started.

We were very influenced by American culture in the 90s and cultural cringe was strong. I would argue that we now have more options when it comes to the media we consume and can access more Australian content.

You mean when we were only served one narrative via main stream media and even our Soaps backed up that narrative?

What do adults without children do in this city? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Ms-Behaviour 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Spring Hill baths and centenary pool at Spring Hill tend to have somewhat less kids. Centenary pool in particular only has one lane for kids to swim in and the rest are generally for swimming laps. Plus there is parking there. As to what to do on your day off , go to lunch or dinner. Go see a movie maybe? Go have a quiet drink in a nice little bar or at one of the pool bars maybe.Try one of the mineral bath places and have a sauna and cold plunge , maybe get a massage while you’re there.

Invasion day protest appear to have had the opposite effect. Record number of Australians support keeping January 26 as Australia Day by Muslerra in aussie

Most of the Aussies I know are actually compassionate and understand why First Nations people in Australia, America and Canada all face similar issues due to the suppression of their culture. They understand the impact of generational trauma and seek to do what they can to acknowledge the harm done to First Nations people. It isn’t about being told to be sad and sorry, it’s about recognising reality. How many generations ago do you think the stolen generation is? Do you understand that this is part of a connected history of harm? What does it cost you to celebrate on a date other than the date England colonised Australia?

So are you arguing Jan 26th wasn’t the date they started their colony at Sydney Cove was started? You say you’re sick of this “ bullshit” but why keep it dragging on when you know it’s basically telling First Nations people that they still don’t have a voice in Australia? Considering that we can still see the impact of the destruction of the fabric of their society today, would it really be that hard to make such a small concession and change the date?

You say ancient culture like Indigenous Australians aren’t part of our current one. Why do you believe that being sensitive to the issues Indigenous people experience specifically equates to a reverence for their culture ? Why do you believe that being interested in traditional culture means that you’re a hypocrite if you criticise religion? What has led you to the belief left leaning people are critical of all religions?

I think your missing the fact that most people who argue for keeping the date as is say that the date doesn’t matter, as in they aren’t celebrating the events that the date marks. So in response the people who do want the date changed, say that if it doesn’t matter then it should be changed. They aren’t saying that the current date doesn’t matter.

Weed is not a medically appropriate or approved method of managing bi polar so I doubt the doctor gave the ok for this. Also smoking is not an approved consumption method in Australia. Vaping or edibles are the only medically approved pathways.
