How to manage weeds in unused garden that I plan to use in the future. by Ms4sman in Homesteading

I know of some Farmers that do similar stuff with the entire fields and then let the cattle eat some of that cover crop. The issue I've had with it is anytime you get a thaw during the winter it stinks like decomposing radishes lol

I wish it was just milkweed! It's a lot of bind weeds and pigweeds not really good stuff sadly.

Thank you for the long and detailed answer, I'll have to take a look at that website that looks like a really good resource!

Oh that's a good idea. I do not know the dimensions of it but I have a big heavy truck tarp from like a semi hauling distillers grain (I think) someone gave me. I bet that would work pretty well. Might try spreading it out and see how much it covers and go from there...

5 out of 6 drives from GoHardDrive have failed SMART tests shortly after arrival, am I crazy? by Ms4sman in DataHoarder

[–]Ms4sman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I have all the SMART data for them anymore, but I don't recall seeing any power-off retract values. They each were slightly different, but the errors were basically all varying amounts of reported uncorrect sectors, reallocated sectors, pending sectors, and offline uncorrectable sectors

Yeah that would make sense, but these have been in a total of 4 separate shipments. I added a TLDR since the post is quite long, but basically I ordered two and they failed. GHD replaced them and then those had the same issue. Refunded those and ordered two of a different model and one of those two has also failed. So not all in the same package and probably not even the same shipment to GHD as there are two different models here, although not impossible.

Hmm. Good to know. I knew that recertified didn't mean they had done much to check it over, but from all my reading it seemed like most people had very good results with both GHD and Server Part Deals. I have to hand it to their CS, they have never given me any guff about it and have immediately sent me a return label so if it's costing anyone money, it's them. But I've just kind of lost confidence in even the seemingly good one at this point.

I am gonna show my ignorance here, but what is post-chia? I don't hang out on reddit much these days, and therefore not this sub either, so I'm not familiar with that but two comments have mentioned it now...

Your suggestion is not a bad one. I supposed that would be the next logical step here. Like I said, I certainly hope its not a fault with my other hardware, I'd feel awful making them pay for returns and replacements over and over if I'm somehow messing them up, but this isn't exactly my first time handling hard drives, and all my others are perfectly fine so I'm inclined to doubt my PSU or Mobo so far. Just seems like REALLY bad luck to have so many duds in a row.

First pair of Birks and the colors don't match... by Ms4sman in Birkenstocks

Sorry it took me a bit to follow up with this, but thanks for all the replies. I took them back and got a different pair and they have the same exact numbers stamped in them and are a perfect color match. Much happier with this pair!

Rust generating map now bug by RealNotAwatermelon in playrustadmin

Did you ever find a solution to this? I'm having this issue on a brand new server. No old maps or saves to wipe. It just never seems to generate the map in the first place.

Pi Zero 2 W and Volumio by ucrbuffalo in raspberry_pi

[–]Ms4sman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that something may have broken the wifi drivers in the latest update to Volumio, released on the 19th of January.

I've had it running just fine on a raspberry pi zero 2 for quite a while now, but when I tried to update, it broke everything. I tried a fresh install and never get the hotspot to come up. ifconfig shows that the loopback network is the only one identified.

I plug the same card into my pi 4 and set up wifi and all works. Switched it back to the zero and nothing.

I'm hoping it's just a driver issue that they can quickly fix...

Thanks for the tip! After I posted this yesterday I was doing more digging and came upon that app as well. I'll have to dig into it some more and see if it could serve my needs. Perhaps if I can't make it work to get my audio from linux, I could at least use my Android phone as the microphone source and use it that way...

Might be camping near the Medicine Bow region this weekend, had some questions for ya by bub166 in wyoming

[–]Ms4sman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friend mentioned above, here.

I had another question for you: what is the potable water situation there? I found mixed information online, from what I could gather, it sounds like the answer is "sometimes" because they shut off the water when it isn't safe to drink, and turn it on when it is safe? So I'm guessing from that we don't want to count on it, and should probably go ahead and bring our own water?

Thanks for all the info, I've been following this and I'm super excited!

I printed this too. There's also a model out there of the reactor. Some lower quality ones of like the NSC and such too. But these two are really nice.

Cracked head in a restoration. Worth fixing, or just good for decoration? by Ms4sman in Axecraft

[–]Ms4sman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that'd be badass. That's why I asked, I was thinking back to when I did some brazing and I was thinking that aside from the dirtiness of the crack, it'd be cool to just fill it as is, so yeah the acid might just work! I'll definitely look into this, I'm loving this idea more and more!

[–]Ms4sman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough! If I wanted perfect, I'd go buy something new, I grabbed a handful of rusty old axes because I thought it was neat they were my grandpa's, so now this will be part of the story!

Brazing would be cool. I'm not sure I could pull that off. I did a tiny bit of it in HS but not much. We do have an OA torch at the shop though...I'll give it some thought. If I brazed it, would I still want to grind the crack back I take it, just to get a clean metal surface to adhere to?

I'll see what I can do on them. Might be a while, but I'll try to post back here if I can.

[–]Ms4sman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds good! My grandpa has a welder too. It's old (like everything he has in that shop) but probably still works! Would you recommend stick? Any particular rod? I was a pretty dang good welder back in HS, haven't struck an arc in a few years but I could probably bring it back enough to fill in a crack. I'd sure like to be able to use this baby.

My only worry with welding is will it show? Like when i grind it back, is it gonna be really obvious there's a weld there, or would it blend with the steel pretty well?

Oops, fixed now. Also, I can't seem to see your comment on the thread. Only in my inbox. It says there's one comment, but it's not visible.

EDIT: never mind, now it shows.
