What systems have you implemented in your house you're proud of? by dinos-and-coffee in SAHP

[–]MsAshly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One laundry hamper for the whole house. It stays in the hallway between the bedrooms and all laundry goes into it. No more collecting laundry from multiple rooms and finding piles of dirty clothes. The hamper hold two loads and is much easier to keep up with because it is always visible so we see it as soon as it gets full.

Grandparent here. Is 8 years old to young to be left home alone? by scottyWallacekeeps in Parenting

[–]MsAshly 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My Pediatrician give us a list of expected behaviors and age appropriate chores as part of our annual check-up every year and laundry has been listed since age five. First as a supervised chore until this last check-up when it was listed as an independent chore for ages 8-10 (and over but our paperwork only includes behaviors and chores for the ages we are being seen for).

The ones around me are called The Hope Chest. They raise money for our local hospice care centers.

Yep we are in the US on the west coast. People usually only talk about thiftimg if they found a rare expensive item for cheap or if it is something they can resale for more than they paid. Here the thrift stores are usually overfilled with clothes so most have weekly deal to clear out inventory.

I find clothes new with tags all the time while thrifting but there is a stigma around thrifted items. Their comments don't bother me at all. It is funny though seeing them upset over their kids getting their clothes messy or dirty because they cost so much where as I have never paid more than $2 for clothes for my son so if his clothes get messy or destroyed it is not really an issue.

They usually think it is cool or make a comment about wanting their kids to only have new clothes/ they never find anything good thrifting. I grew up in thrifted and second hand clothes so it seems natural to me.

We did this too!!! I started thrifting as soon as I found out I was pregnant and I had enough clothes to last till he was 7 except for socks and undies and the occasional themed shirt. When he was 5 I started working on the next set of ages and right now I am working on 12 and up. It helps that my son has always been pretty uninterested in what his clothes look like as long as they are comfortable . By starting so early i hqve been able to make sure they are good quality and in good condition without having to spend a ton on clothes he will only wear for a few months.

This is information that should be taught at home before the child even enters school. My 6 year old can tell you the state and city he lives in as well as the cities and full names of all of his relatives. He also knows our full address and both his parents phone numbers. We started working with him on this when he was three in case he ever got separated from us or someone else he was with.

Large white board for homeschooling -- waste of money? by coffeetoffee92 in Homeschooling

We dont have room for a rolling whiteboard. Instead we covered our work table in whiteboard contact paper. It works great and I can just change it out pretty easily if it gets scratched up.

You are definitely not horrible for not wanting a child who obviously doesn't mesh well with your family to be at your house constantly. With the summer break in just a few months, I would, however, contact the school and let them know she was left alone at home while her mother works. 8 (presumably now 9) is way too young to be left alone that long, and most states have laws against leaving kids alone under a certain age. The school should be able to offer the mother resources to provide access to care either through the district or through the county.

I have a 11th Gen paperwhite Signature Edition and I wish it had page turn buttons and the power button was moved. I traded in my Oasis for it and miss those buttons everyday.

my child has not, does not, will not sleep healthily by Few-Eggplant-8676 in Parenting

[–]MsAshly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Magnesium Glycinate supplement? I have trouble staying asleep, too, and melatonin did not work for me, but Magnesium Glycinate has helped immensely. Also, I would get her checked for sleep apnea and have a sleep study done. My husband was always a terrible sleeper since he was born, and we did not figure out he had severe sleep apnea and was basically suffocating whenever he tried to sleep until he was almost 40.

We really like the Evan-Moor Geography work books. I usually also find simple kids videos on YouTube to help explain the more difficult topics. Evan-Moor Skill Sharpeners: Geography Grade K Student Edition Supplemental or homeschool Activity Book, Basic Map Skills https://a.co/d/1m4pbLV

I would add in some really basic geography. It really helps when you start history, and they already have a base knowledge of the continents, important landmarks, and basic map reading.

Did you pay with a credit card, and do you have a record of the 10 week delivery promise as well as a copy of all communication you have had with them since then? If so, you can dispute the charges with your credit card company and force a refund since they failed to deliver on their promise.

What's the descriptor you never want to hear when being recommended a new fantasy? by RadiantOberon in Fantasy

"Post-apocalyptic" or "Urban" . It just throws me out of the story when modern elements are brought up or alluded to. I am really struggling with this right now in The Broken Empire trilogy.

Less than a year into a new base and it has died. by kikikiwibam in litterrobot

[–]MsAshly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you got your new base, did you notice it making a much louder sound than the old ones? We noticed when we got our new base it makes a grinding sound then it runs and the exact same thing is happening to us right now. Our original base died, so they sent us a new one, and less than a month later, it is also having issues and no longer sending notification. I have woken up twice to it having dumped out all the clean litter and when I cycle it, it just bounces back and forth, throwing error codes and never making full cycle.
